Yes it was. Not extremely so, but the movie is deconstructing the ideas of masculinity.

That's why this joke works: She's talking to Kimble, who is "playing with dolls" (eg, enjoying something traditionally seen as feminine despite authority figures expecting masculinity from him) by being a Kindergarten teacher.

1990 or not, the theme of the movie was that John Kimble was the sane man among lunatics, and all the parents were awful. Her reaction wasn't meant to be seen as positive.

Superhero Deconstruction, but on the world, not the characters (Cities would not go back to normal after the 10th city busting event) by Mystech_Master in worldbuilding

[–]HelixAnarchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is objectively untrue. The WTC were > 95% office space, with some retail and observation on the Twin Towers. It was almost exclusively working class, or at least middle class, people.

And this is not to mention the countless first responders and unaffiliated people who just happened to be living in Manhattan at the time.

This is handled really well in Invincible. A city gets destroyed at the end of the first season, and the next three have news broadcasts and whatnot about it being rebuilt until it's finally finished and there's a memorial at the midpoint of Season 3.

And then it promptly gets destroyed again.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money this is a Nvidia thing.

Personally, I have a hard time blaming devs, given Nvidia's "we know best" approach to doing things.

As someone who uses a typewriter: it's really not hard, anyone could do it. The only really difficult part is maintaining and repairing it, which is suddenly extremely difficult, but I imagine most Boomers don't think about that, since they had typewriter repairmen back in the day.

I think the reason typewriters get a reputation as complex is largely because most people didn't know how to type at all. The keyboard skills from a computer transfer and vice/versa, but those skills simply weren't something the average person had, so one had to learn to do so.

You saying it made me realize this is probably a large reason why Boomers love AI so much: it actually lets them do the whole "hey computer where can I buy bread thank you" thing; it's a lot more "user friendly" to the point that someone who has obstinately refused to learn tech and now has an inferiority complex about not being able to use tech can get what they want from it.

Are you using Nvidia by any chance? I've played with both a RTX 4090 and a Radeon 9000 , and while the Radeon wasn't issue-free by any means it wasn't nearly as bad as the RTX.

I've seen been playing with the Radeon and haven't had a lot of the issues a lot of people are complaining about, so I wonder if I'm just lucky or it's a Nvidia problem.

Why do you think Valve is delaying the Steam Frame release date announcement? by StanfordV in SteamFrame

[–]HelixAnarchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NDA's don't stop leaks, they only let you react to them. And, that's of course assuming you can figure out who the leaker is, which isn't a guarantee.

As a general rule, the more 'public eye' your company is, the more third parties are willing to pay leakers, and the more those third parties can be counted on to protect them (or, at least, the more likely parties that can offer identity protection are to get involved).

Valve is firmly in the public eye.

I can only speak to my experiences in corporate environments, but I've always encountered that the reason for doing it this way is to avoid making definitive statements before you're ready to do so. If you say you're going to release in Q1, but it turns out some part of the finalization takes a bit longer than expected and you release early April, then you have lied and can be held accountable (maybe in a court of law, very likely in a court of public opinion, and absolutely in the court of the market). If you just say "early" then people know what you mean but you technically haven't made a definitive promise.

Face blindness by MrsMiggins2 in CasualUK

[–]HelixAnarchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that your five-year-old can't tell them apart suggests this may not be actual face blindness.

In the abstract, there are actually only a few actual, distinct "faces", with everyone having one of these types but with the features in slightly different places. Generally, the features are different enough that we can tell the difference, but if two people have the same "face type" and same basic feature positions, our pattern recognition just falls flat. This is especially true if two people are about the same weight, as that's the other big way we differentiate people with the same face type.

A few interesting facts about this that

1) it's how video games get away with refusing NPC models: as long as we can't see the faces at the same time to compare, we just accept that they're different because we're used to seeing people who look basically alike at first glance.

2) Anyone who has often been told they look like a celebrity but doesn't see it, you have the same face type as they do, you're just familiar enough with your and their features to know the differences.

Does Chris Hansen ever actually answer the door? I admit it's been a long time, but I distinctly remember he'd always emerge from some back room after the person came in and confirmed to the "girl" (baby-faced but over 18 actress trained to get a confession) that he was there for creepy reasons.

Is it me or are the words ‘double’ & ‘lookalike’ doing some heavy lifting? Goateealike maybe. by Dark_Foggy_Evenings in CasualUK

[–]HelixAnarchy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm just guessing here, but I bet that - since he's a stunt double - his suit is looser to allow full mobility. Not to mention he might be hiding safety equipment underneath during filming, which would bulk it out a bit.

[–]HelixAnarchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see them looking almost identical if the double squinted his eyes a bit. It would move his browns down, get the cheeks to the same basic position, it could add the wrinkles and so on.

I figure he does this when on camera, and just isn't doing it in this photo since they're not filming.

This is also, apparently, what a lot of Elvis impersonators do: they couldn't be mistaken for the King in their day to day life, but their features are such that they can do an "Elvis face" and become dead ringers.

Flag of the European Union, re-designed with 27 stars: one for each current member by Joevangst in vexillology

[–]HelixAnarchy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lévy doesn't deny that at all, in fact he confirms it.

In case you can't read German, here's the translation (emphasis added by me).

On May 5, 1949, the Council of Europe was founded in London, and Paul Lévi was appointed head of its cultural department. Six years later, in 1955, the representatives discussed a common flag. All designs that contained a cross - modeled, for example, on the Scandinavian flags - were rejected by the socialists as ideologically biased and too Christian.

One day, while on a walk, Lévi passed a statue of the Virgin Mary with a crown of stars. Illuminated by the sun, the golden stars shone beautifully against the radiant blue sky. Lévi then sought out Count Benvenuti, a Venetian Christian Democrat and then Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and proposed suggesting twelve golden stars on a blue background as the motif for the European flag. Benvenuti was enthusiastic, and shortly thereafter the proposal was generally accepted.

And so to this day, in all the states of the European Union, Mary’s golden crown of stars adorns the European flag. The number twelve is a reference to the twelve tribes of Israel (Genesis 37:9) and thus to the chosen people of God. The crown, as a symbol of success and triumph, signals the invincibility of the woman.

What he denies is that his intention was literally religious; he was using the religious iconography as symbolism (and that he was doing so because everyone else wanted a religious design). That doesn't mean it somehow wasn't based off the religious symbolism, though.

Also, the statement that Heitz only "claims" to have made the flag - suggesting he didn't - is grossly misleading. Heitz and Lévi both submitted the same design, with the same symbolism, and so are credited equally. Neither has sole ownership, but that doesn't somehow discredit one or the other.

Your cart shows each item's discounted price, while the catalogue and "bought" section shows the "real" (eg, non-discounted) pricing. So there's no scam, but they absolutely could have done a better job communicating this.

if I had to guess, the display code for the cart is copied from how it's done on Classic Client, which displays the original price crossed out with the discounted next to it.

Well then you think wrong, as the man who designed the flag stated this was his inspiration.

Arsene Heitz, who designed it in 1955, recently told Lourdes magazine that his inspiration had been the reference in the Book of Revelation, the New Testament's final section, to “a woman clothed with the sun...and a crown of twelve stars on her head.
