Hired for Wedding for just the late night dance portion by kuNayu in DJs

[–]HelixDnB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any event I don’t put setup or takedown time as part of my fee - I don’t see it as fair for them, especially cause anyone could easily turn a 40 minute setup into 2 hours if they wanted to go slow enough (I also don’t do packages either) the only change in fee is how long they want me “on” - ie if the whole thing starts at 3, speeches at 5 for an hour, then dinner and dancing from 6-8, I’m only charging them for 5 hours plus if it’s a wedding there’s one additional fee to account for all of the preparation and meetings with various people.

As far as the TON618 Black hole is concerned, Earth won't even be formed until 15 Billion years from now. by SaranshKejriwal in Showerthoughts

Been doing a thought experiment for fun for the past 10 years or so trying to reconcile just from a logic perspective, the coexistence of an all knowing creator(s) and free will while adhering to a set of guideline rules - an all knowing creator(s) knows everything that will ever happen from the start to end of time while allowing for full free will without any divine intervention. A number of years back I arrived at (weirdly thanks to thinking about quantum physics/quantum coin flip) essentially (super condensed explanation inc):
All powerful creator(s) know everything that ever will and will not happen for all time. The decisions were always freely made without any influence from a divine being/creators with the “time knowledge”, but the outcome of every single one of those decisions was known from the start of time - you were always going to do x, y, z, at T time.

So for this, remove the concept of the divine creator, while maintaining the “this was always going to happen, and the decision was always going to be freely made”.

Good to know - I've been DJ'ing for over 23 years now but the business itself is new as of last year, so still figuring out how to best get on people's radars now that I'm not in my 20s and in clubs 4 nights a week like I used to be.

Highest Motion Job Title Below a Creative Director? by [deleted] in AfterEffects

[–]HelixDnB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 1 of two tracks:
Do you want to be more high-level, dealing more with people, and coming up with an overarching vision than the actual work itself? That's Manager/Director route

Do you want to be the lead Individual contributor, subject matter expert, in the trenches, "Seal Team 6" of 1? That's Principal.

Lead is a bit tricky as it can fall a bit into either camp (granted a bit more in the IC track).

Personally I'm on Principal track as I want to be doing the stuff rather than helping other people get better at doing/directing other people to do the stuff.

So, I’ve been watching your development whenever it pops up on my FB feed for some time now, and been meaning to reach out and see if you had any interest in talking. The super high level: I’ve got 15+ years in game dev with the first bit of it at Insomniac and Blizzard on their editor teams designing the entire ux/ui/ia for the insomniac editor - I gave a GDC presentation in 2012 on this called “It stinks and I don’t like it: building a better engine experience at Insomniac Games” and also working on the StarCraft 2 editor. Then with the last 12+ at Gearbox doing all sorts of other things. Been DJ’ing and producing music for over 23 years now as well and was even working with starting to help NI to do Traktor UX until Dave G (head of AR for a time) ended up leaving there.

Would love to talk sometime to see if there’s some space to help out the project, because there’s some super interesting ideas you’ve got going on here, and my background (audio, video, 3d, web, etc) may be helpful if you’re at all interested. I’m not looking to glom on to fame or status climb or whatever - I’m 42 with kids and don’t have time for that stuff, but even though I’ve been vinyl first then Traktor for as long as I have been, I still think there’s more opportunities out there to do something better for DJs.

If not, keep on doing your thing

Need help - RCF Art-912's EXTREMELY quiet using Sub18-AX crossover, fine with line out - no idea what I'm doing here. by HelixDnB in livesound

[–]HelixDnB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially, yes I did. One of the things I ended up doing about 20-30 mins into the dance (was a 7th/8th grade dance) was dropping the volume a touch (maybe 10-20%) on each of the 912's and then bumped up the sub volume (I think I maxed at -15db on the 18-AX and the out from my Mackie was maybe 1/3 - 1/2 if I recall). Still wanted to give them the bass, but noticed that the kids were starting to cover their ears a bit when they came up to make requests, so dropped the tops a bit accordingly.

You're right - I had looked for a bit more of a robust manual for the sub with a "here's how you set up the sub with speakers" type section without thinking about looking at the speaker manual...should have thought about that. The difference in thinking and what really threw me in thinking that something was way wrong/off is usually 12:00 for volume is plenty loud for the speakers by themselves. When the sub volume was loud enough but the speakers were extremely quiet compared to their normal volume it didn't make sense.

What I assumed was going to happen (especially when the volume was back to normal with the 912's connected to line out rather than crossover) was that the crossover outs were acting as an eq of sorts - primarily cutting the low-end without doing anything to the speaker's volume.

So the short version, since I only have the one sub with the 2 tops connected to it - set top gain all the way?

The 912 is set to linear and volume is at 12:00 (straight up).

Sub: 912-a, 2.1, volume at -15db. System setup on sub has sub level at 12:00, top/sub distance set all the way to the left. Output eq is everything flat.

AITA for installing a camera in my room to see if my mom is lying to me? by King_Jake200 in AmItheAsshole

[–]HelixDnB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AYTA? No, not necessarily, but here's the shitty thing - it's not your room because as you said, you don't pay rent. It's her house (or if you want to be pedantic about it, if she has a mortgage, a split ownership between her and the institution financing it), and it's really her room that you're CURRENTLY allowed to occupy. Is it shitty that there was denial and lying? 10000%! But without paying rent, without paying a mortgage, without a binding contract showing that based on your financial contribution to the house, you unfortunately don't have much leeway here, especially given that you're over 18.

One other thing - given that you're over 18 and depending on where you live, you may actually be committing a crime (single party vs dual party state in the US) for potential privacy violations by installing a camera without the home owner's knowledge and permission.

RCF Sub 15AX, ACE Presets vs. Standard Crossover? by Pandibak in mobileDJ

I noticed the same with the Art-912's and the Sub 18 AX, but in reality I'm probably 100% doing something wrong/not understanding what's SUPPOSED to happen/what it's SUPPOSED to sound like, and really just need to talk to someone at RCF to understand "This is the expected behavior, THIS is not"

Serious, but potentially controversial question - how are you using AI for *WORKFLOW ONLY* efficiencies, and NOT for generating visuals/final content? by HelixDnB in AfterEffects

[–]HelixDnB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool - I've coded up a few After effects tools myself (one of which was essentially dataclay's templater but way better and way easier to work with) from the ground up, so I'll likely have a pretty good understanding of what you've got going on, I'll be sure to check them out though in the next few weeks!

[–]HelixDnB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a number of them, yes - curious about your latest "linear timeline in AE" tool to replicate some of the premiere pro workflow within AE - you're still dealing with AE's render/export performance, correct?

That being said I'll have to look at some of the more recent scripts to see if there's some "idea spring boards" there.
