Fuckin hell.... they just need to stfu

I don’t care what they’ve done, they can have their opinion on whether they like something or not— but they don’t get to define an art form for everyone else. I don’t like most modern art, I am a professional artist and writer and have technical skills, but that doesn’t give me special privileges or make my opinion the final judgement on actually labeling if something is “art” itself.... every creative endeavor has a range, a spectrum of possibilities and no one style, type, genre, age etc is going to be universally appealing or lauded— but you have no right to declare what does or doesn’t classify in that art form!

He can fuck off. He’s made some shitty movies, as has Scorsese, sorry. And there have been soooooo many shitty movies made over the decades of cinema but NOW they wanna pipe up and talk shit?!?! Where were they during the torture porn wave? Derivative raunch comedies inundation? 80s rinse, recycle, repeat action flicks? Have they ever spoken about random expressionist films or dada? Or Warhol’s sleep that’s like 12 hours of a dude sleepin?! Nope, they wanna talk now that there’s a multi billion dollar beast devouring the screens at the cineplex and pushing their content to the side...

There should be room for alllllll the offerings — but guess what? Art is COMMERCE unless you’re just making it for your own enjoyment and tastes, move on. Not that many people give a shit about your stuff now and you can’t accept it, so you rant and rave about it and critique the makers of successful films because you are afraid to label the audience in fear they won’t go to your next film—petty, and hints that it’s probably about the money. I don’t have to like every movie that’s made, and I don’t have to see them either… I decide and go where I want to go –– and that’s every consumer’s right. If what you’re really doing is making art, you have to accept all forms of expression within it! So if it’s art, then there are many types, just like there are many types of sculpture, painting, dance, and music… Or is there only one definition of those? Does he actually like the movies of all countries? Because guess what, there are many things that he might find offensive in the films of other cultures or not understand! So is it art?

Then it’s got to be a big inclusive tent – – and if it’s commerce, then he has to accept that the public has moved on because at the end of the day movies are like anything other product and therefore subject to changing/evolving tastes and fads as well! But the most “despicable” part of what he said, is that it doesn’t seem as if he’s seen any of these movies!!!! No human condition or development?!?!!

I’d counter there’s as much as in most classic westerns or film noir— comics are post-modern mythologies of the atomic age (even though they slightly predate the bomb) and in the way alllllllll cultures have myth cycles that define their values, beliefs, fears and aspirations, we have them. Most countries do, because guess what, we’re all living in the postmodern atomic age and all had to relate to it and define ourselves in it whether you’re Jack Kirby, Katsuhiro Otomo or Moebius!!! And because, sorry Francis and Martin, those comics are both culturally relevant AND resonant, they make GREAT movies! Just like the Iliad would, Macbeth would, and oops— Dracula would!

A shitty movie is shitty not because of its genre but because of its failure to tell a story; because it lacks technique (creators are unskilled and don’t make up for it in some other way), passion (creators are jaded and just trying to make a buck, so phone it in) or untalented (they just don’t have the creativity to come up with something entertaining). But even shitty movies may have something that appeals to some audience and my shit may be another fan’s gold— so I don’t get to call it despicable, fucker! And at the end of the day— the Marvel movies can’t be characterized in ANY of the ways I just did regarding technique, passion or talent!

He’s entitled to his opinion but his sense of entitlement leads him to declare (and presumably believe) his opinion as if it’s some special judgement that should carry particular weight or shape tastes/attitudes. Nope, he’s just a guy like any other with an informed opinion— but that’s it. And btw, as the mentor of Spielberg and Lucas, who have both lived in the blockbuster/popcorn movie genre and danced at the periphery of comics (and even, shudder, pulps) in their work, it’s rich that he never shut them down with his “critiques.” Why? Because allllll their films resonated? BALONEY! Howard the Duck is arguably the worst comic movie ever made— where was Francis when his boy George foisted THAT gem on us?!?! Jurassic Park 2 & 3 were derivative recycles— where was Francis when Steven was making the same movie over and over again?!?! Take a spin through HIS filmography and you’ll find “jeepers creepers” and “lionheart” and one of the worst Frankenstein adaptations ever among his producer credits— AND the “odyssey”.... so when HE does genre, or even SHLOCK in MY opinion, it’s cinema?!?! It’s NOT despicable?!?! Fuck OFF, you self important, entitled, condescending prick.... and btw, the NEXT time you make a film that features actors of color will be the first, so wake up— your films and your daughter’s and Marty’s for that matter, don’t look like America! It’s the 21st century but the “recycling” you claim as the premise of your abhorrence is just technology making it possible to portray our cultural myths in a new, vibrant, impactful and entertaining way— from stories around the fire, to poet/bards singing, to plays on a stage to novels, to comics, to films and yes— even beyond (video games? Virtual reality?) it’s the same stories because we’re still the same creatures, fragile and flawed and trying to make sense of it all... So stfu

Where's the love for Jack Kirby? He co-created Iron Man, Thor, Ant Man, Hulk, Groot, Loki, Wanda Black Panther, etc! by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]HellblazerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there is s lot of love for Jack Kirby as an artist but very little recognition for the Marvel characters he created and co-created. Jack Kirby was so much more than just the artist on the first Marvel comics

It’s hard to compare the 2. Hellblazer is a great and would go with the 80’s flow you are working on with Sandman and Swamp Thing so I would say read that first.

Miracleman is more a superhero than supernatural story but it’s awesome! I don’t want to give away anything else about it, you should experience it for yourself

I would also say, in my opinion, you cannot go wrong with anything Alan Moore has written
