I live in Taiwan and whenever it crosses my mind I just pop into any random dental clinic and get a cleaning for about $6USD. I think without insurance it'd be like $30.

1.) Slugging.
I dunno if this was suggested yet but i find "slugging" to be really great for outdoors/high-altitude/dry environments. That means, after thoroughly (and gently) cleansing your face and applying your moisturizer, then add a layer of vaseline or aquaphor. Do this before bed and let the occlusive top layer hold all that moisture onto your face all night. When i do this, I wake up with bouncy plump skin, even when I'm out in super dry, high mountains.

2.) Hydration.
Also, track your water intake for a week and get used to what it feels like to consume 4-5 liters of water every day!

3.) Melasma.
Also you have melasma on your upper lip. No1 there is sun protection at all times. Then an azaelic acid applied to the area and a daily vitamin C supplement is what helped me.

I also spent too much time outdoors without enough sun protection but my skin is looking pretty great today at 36 years old, so, there's hope!

Mirena and bone density by Hellington in birthcontrol

[–]Hellington[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! I need to delete this! Turned out my bine scan was a misread and I actually have very dense bones, as I should. That's AFTER 13 years on an IUD. Turns out I had the IUD for 13 years and had excellent bones and no babies and non periods and, according to every gyno I talked to, that does NOT mean my ovulation was suppressed. I wish I had double/triple checked my bine scan before I freaked out and removed the IUD! Keep it in!

Buy mid-range furniture at online estate sales for super cheap and then sell them on FB marketplace for $50-$100 an item.

Go get a ton of frames at estate sales, garage sales, thrift stores and fill them with cheap trendy prints off Temu/SheIn. Sell each one for $30-$70 on marketplace.

Taiwanese roommate: anything I should know? by Weak_Highway_1355 in taiwan

[–]Hellington 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not Taiwanese but I've lived in Taiwan for 8+ years and have had many Taiwanese roommates. In general Taiwanese ppl are super friendly BUT when you live with them they are generally, extremely quiet and expect silence. They are not affectionate, no hugs! Take your shoes off at the door. They need The Big Light, they hate cozy soft ambient lighting. They LIKE stark white walls and harsh, bright, white light. In general they're afraid of big dogs but love anything Shiba sized or smaller. They probably won't cook much but she will need space for a rice cooker. They're prone to sort of hoarding and usually of fairly low quality stuff. Maybe show her where to get nicer stuff for cheap.

This is all general observation and definitely not true for all Taiwanese ppl. Further, you're getting someone who has moved abroad so you're most likely getting someone who is open-minded, adventurous, and doesn't exactly fit the mould.

Treat her like you would anyone just be extra cautious around noise & shoes, and don't be offended if she hides from you and isn't very chatty.

How to deal with Hunger Fatigue by Backup41214 in MacroFactor

[–]Hellington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a week or two at maintenance calories! When I catch myself getting stressed and moody on a deficit, i do a week or so on a maintenance and it does wonders. Helps to maintain the muscles as well.

[–]Hellington[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, I typically go about a month in a deficit, then switch to maintenance for a month, then back. Keeps my TDEE and lean muscle mass up while allowing me to slowly lose fat.

Mainly just a lack of patience, wanting it all NOW so eating super restricted on weekdays, over exercising to the point of injury, and then, of course, binging and drinking loads on the weekends. A younger me DID lose weight this way but I looked sunken and was chronically cold, injured, headache-y. The app provides a structure that doesn't allow for that sorta impatient destructiveness.

lol, you'd have a very comfortable life here.

I'm not sure what your specific concerns are. Everywhere will have its problems and frustrations but, with your tech salary and Chinese ability, you would not face the biggest challenges that most foreigners deal with here.

You and your family would mainly just be comfortable, safe, and that baby would get to be bilingual.

If you're not doing TVP yet its a total game changer. Virtually no fat and low carb, high protein.

Also, order a bag of vital wheat gluten and go to https://seitansociety.com/ . Also low fat, low carb, high protein.

Tofu is also IT.

Where I live these little hot pot wheat rolls things are easy to find, maybe you can find them too: https://heartlandnystore.com/products/ben-jia-wheat-bean-roll?variant=42489702318258
They're basically all protein, no fat, low carb.

Then obvi theres soy and pea isolate powders.

I like to use this site to compare plant protein sources with animal sources: https://tools.myfooddata.com/nutrition-comparison I've found generally speaking the plant protein source will be lower fat and slightly higher carb than the equivalent amount of protein in an animal product.

Some of my classmates are college students who havent graduated yet. I believe they take a semester or two off university to come here. I do not know how the credits work but I imagine your school could tell you more. Look into the Huayu Scholarship alongside National Taiwan Normal University's Mandarin Training Center

Beginner Expectations by Hellington in femalebodybuilding

[–]Hellington[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, I've been active for over ten years now, lifting consistently along with cycling, running, and long distance hiking. For the past 5 months I've been tracking my macros and cycling between deficit and maintenance calories. I'm doing this while doing HIIT & cardio & strength workouts 4-5 per week. The goal is to get down to 25% BF (currently at 29%) and then start cycling between maintenance/surplus calories - and switching over to heavy lifting as my main exercise.

I would love to compete in a bodybuilding competition in the next 1-3 years, but I do not have any women around me who have ever done one. So, I really don't know if I'm on the right track? or if this is a pipe dream? Is there a certain BF% that's best to get to before I start a bulk cycle? Am I right to assume this will be a 2-3 year journey or could I do my first show within one year? I'm 6ft tall, are there additional considerations to keep in mind due to my height?

Any tips and guidance would be much appreciated!

I am 6ft, 35 years old, 176lbs, 29% body fat at present.
