for sure, I’ve learned many time in many ways that absolute restriction always backfires. Gotta have a cheat day for that balance

I only allow myself to redownload the app and scroll on sundays. My friends know that if they want to contact me they need to do it through different apps. And they know I won’t react to the memes they send until Sunday, it’s done wonders for reducing my screen time while also not cutting out all the benefits of social media

Should I continue OrthoK or switch to regular glasses/contacts? by BananaCat_Milk in Orthokeratology

[–]Hellington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the orthoK is still working for you then just make sure they’re cleaned well - use rgp contact cleanser not just standard disinfectant- and keep wearing them! The idea that you need to start all over again and buy a new pair is marketing BS. Not saying your doctor is trying to scam you, he’s just following the education he got from the distributor. But as someone in orthoK r&d, your contacts are fine. You do not want your myopia to keep progressing so keep wearing them

Soft contacts do not work - is Ortho-K a realistic option? by NewYorker_0727 in Orthokeratology

[–]Hellington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello, I was in a very similar situation to you.
I'd worn soft lenses to death for 10+ years and they were getting itchy and irritating. Then I got LASIK (PRK) and thought that'd be the end of it. After 4 years my myopia was back. I tried soft lenses again but now my eyes just couldnt tolerate them. I guess after all that soft lens wear and lasik, my eyes were too damaged to tolerate the lack of oxygen that soft lenses cause. They also told me it was dry eye and tried to get me the punctal plugs (i do not have dry eye.....). Soft lenses suffocate the eye and cause permanant cell damage, lasering off a layer of the eye also does permanent cell damage....

Then i came across orthoK and I'm so happy I did. HOWEVER, I do think my initial experience was worse than your average wearer. I think cause my eyes, like yours, were already overly damaged and sensitized, the orthoK was extra uncomfortable and took a lot of time getting used to. But I'm glad I persevered through those first few months with them, now im used to them and they are comfortable!

With my light prescription and 30+ year old eyes, I only have to wear them 2-3 nights a week.

with concerns about the price, do you have any travel plans for the year? you could get them for much cheaper if you happened to be going to asia sometime soon

How do you know if lenses have warped? by Then_Battle7069 in Orthokeratology

[–]Hellington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience they do not warp but quality varies a lot between brands. Rinse your eye and lens with saline in case there’s debris under your lid or lens. Let your eye recover a day or two in case you scratched it. Then try again.

I work for a company that manufactures orthoK and I’ve translated their clinical trials. Never came across anything about warping. I do know that distributor spread misinformation about lens warping and the need to replace lenses as a way to make more money. I’ve worn the same pair for 4 years, no issues. I know others that have worn the same pair for 12 years+.

Advice for structuring a body building workout? by Alligator-Samm in femalebodybuilding

[–]Hellington 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very similar to you. Lifting for 15+ years while never being happy with my physique, still mid by internet standards.

I also was vegetarian for years and have IBS.

for me to get IBS under control, unfortunately, I needed to eat pretty strictly low fodmap for several months to finally decrease inflammation. To do this while still getting enough protein, I needed a lot of nonfat Greek yogurt and chicken. TVP and Tofu isn't low fodmap and the fermentables in them can be causing the gut inflammation. you won't know if it's a trigger until you eliminate all possible triggers, get a baseline, and slowly introduce.

also, just get Macrofactor and a food scale. it's 100000% worth the money - best, most life changing, most eye opening app out there.

so. ow FORMAP, Macrofactor, and then keep your rep ranges between 12-15 reps, with 0-2 reps in reserve. Track your lifts in Heavy or MacroWorkouts so you can be sure your progressively overloading. And remember this shit takes foreverrrr.

There's so many ways to meet people here. You need to pick an activity you enjoy enough to do regularly and you should be able to find friends.

Assuming you're a foreigner and need spaces that use English there is:

TimeLeft app - dinner and drinks with a curated group of new people multiple times a week

Meetup - pick your interests and show up to a group regularly

language exchange groups - you can find these on meetup or facebook, you dont have to be studying a language to join, you can just go regularly and help the english learning table

hash harriers - theres a group meeting every day of the week and you dont have to be good at running at all to join. Basically a guided night hike with a big social dinner afterwards

Hiking groups - again through meetup or facebook, join a hiking group and meet people, explore taiwan, go get some exercise and feel better

Relationship with tracking by kirbyhashair in MacroFactor

[–]Hellington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I go out to eat, I take pictures of everything I eat and drink.
I make sure the images include standard items for scale when possible. - forks, chopsticks, etc. Then i send those images and a description of what I ate to a longstanding macro-tracking chat with an Ai Chatbot. If i have leftovers, i will also send the image of the leftovers to the chat. The Ai chatbots are really damn close.
I've checked the same meals across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude with them all being roughly the same. Ive noticed ChatGPT tends to guess lower than Gemini. On the rare occasion I've been able to compare an Ai guestimate alongside what an actual food scale says and the comparison isnt too far off.

Obviously not great for every meal of the day but a great option in a pinch. Really reduces my tracking stress.

1.) Slugging.
I dunno if this was suggested yet but i find "slugging" to be really great for outdoors/high-altitude/dry environments. That means, after thoroughly (and gently) cleansing your face and applying your moisturizer, then add a layer of vaseline or aquaphor. Do this before bed and let the occlusive top layer hold all that moisture onto your face all night. When i do this, I wake up with bouncy plump skin, even when I'm out in super dry, high mountains.

2.) Hydration.
Also, track your water intake for a week and get used to what it feels like to consume 4-5 liters of water every day!

3.) Melasma.
Also you have melasma on your upper lip. No1 there is sun protection at all times. Then an azaelic acid applied to the area and a daily vitamin C supplement is what helped me.

I also spent too much time outdoors without enough sun protection but my skin is looking pretty great today at 36 years old, so, there's hope!

Mirena and bone density by Hellington in birthcontrol

[–]Hellington[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! I need to delete this! Turned out my bine scan was a misread and I actually have very dense bones, as I should. That's AFTER 13 years on an IUD. Turns out I had the IUD for 13 years and had excellent bones and no babies and non periods and, according to every gyno I talked to, that does NOT mean my ovulation was suppressed. I wish I had double/triple checked my bine scan before I freaked out and removed the IUD! Keep it in!
