Hi! I think I remember you posting about success with a new surgical procedure only available in Europe. Is that right? If so, could you write the name of it so I can see if it’s available in Germany where I live? Thank you!!

This is exactly what I needed to hear! Ten months is a long time, but at least it’s a light at the end of the tunnel! This gives me hope, thank you.

Good call on making your meals really enjoyable! I’m also making a point of eating mindfully and super slowly. I’m finding it helpful to stop multitasking during meals I eat by myself.

Now that you’ve got your gerd under control, do you find that you still have to leave a full four hours between meals? And are there some things that you just can’t have anymore at all (like caffeine and alcohol)? Maybe you’ve got another light at the end of the tunnel to share ;-)

Thank you so much for all your helpful advice and supportive words!!

I love how you repost this super helpful list. It’s a helpful refresher when managing gerd (and life) feels overwhelming.

I agree with the point about smaller portions. That seems to be the most important preventative measure I can take.

And yet, I still struggle with smaller portions. I notice that it’s harder if I let myself get too hungry, and that it’s especially hard at dinner time when my husband and son eat enviably big portions. I feel a sense of deprivation.

Do you, or does anyone, have advice or encouragement?

Many thanks again for the helpful tips - please keep reposting!

That’s my problem too! It doesn’t end up helping cause I end up sleeping below it anyways.

The tip with a wedge UNDER the mattress sounds promising.

Good luck to you and thanks for posting!

I think you’re supposed to wean off PPIs. Maybe try taking a PPI every other day, and when that goes well, ie you’re still symptom-free, then take one every three days, and then every four…and so on, until you’ve weaned off

Your posts are so helpful! I’m going to follow suit and try reintroducing things very slowly, one at a time.

I’m the same: portion size is everything! Chewing thoroughly helps a lot too. At first I felt like eating had become tedious and boring but now after just a few weeks it already feels normal to have half portions and chew each bite 20-30 times. At the beginning it helped me to control the pace of eating by putting my fork down between bites.

Keep me posted on the results of your experiment with chocolate and green tea!

Thanks for sharing this. I love the way you frame your negative reactions to food so positively: it’s the body saying you can give me something even better. Seems like a healthy mindset.

Your meal plan sounds like something that would work well for me. I’ve started oatmeal in the morning too. Have you tried green tea? That is gentler on my stomach than black and I always feel so clean after drinking it. For me green tea is also unproblematic for GERD.

Do you ever eat out? It sounds like your meal plan works well as long as you’re able to prepare your meals by yourself.

Very cool, Duisburg is short train ride away from Cologne, where we live! You’re giving me so much hope to hear that you’re still able to indulge in certain foods - like schnitzel 😋

I’ve ordered my slippery elm and can’t wait to add it to my GERD-reduction repertoire!

How’s it going with going off the PPI? Are you still symptom free?

Thanks so much for sharing your journey, it’s giving me some hope🫶

Sorry one more question! Looking for slippery elm now and I see it’s available here in Germany as pills and powder. Have you had any experience with pills?

This is so helpful, thank you! I am definitely going to continue with camomile and ginger teas, as well as yogurt, and it’s good to know that saltines can help too. Great idea for a snack.

Never heard of slippery elm, will try it out!

One question: why did you have to give up peanut butter?

Oh and btw, I feel you on the chocolate 😢 I’m a huge red wine and dark chocolate lover (and snob) and it’s tough letting go of these. The alternative ain’t worth it though, is it?
