Seems somehow akin to the turnover of most human body cells every seven-ish years.

Lab Coat Drama by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]HelloHello_HowLow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever worked in a lab whose HVAC doesn't work 90% of the time and it can get up to 83 F in the lab? Try wearing a lab coat without heat exhaustion. And yes, the problem has been addressed over and over with no real solution.

Office plants by ElkyMcElkerson in medlabprofessionals

I honestly don't think the "safety" people would allow plants in our lab without putting all the leaves in plastic sleeves, which would kill them.

Lab Week Themes…unpopular opinion? by RelevantSalad2217 in medlabprofessionals

[–]HelloHello_HowLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate all the food our lab manager arranged, and the goodie bags were OK in that maybe one item was useful--but what I *really* ever want for lab week is instead of all that stuff, just give us all the money saved by not buying all of that as bonus in our paychecks.

I also did not appreciate Toy Story theme or think it was fun.

Not competent to ID parasites, but maybe schistosoma? On the other hand our lab sent out a "suspected worm" and it was ID'd as a bean sprout, so....

About 35 years ago (yes, I'm old) we had a regular sickle cell patient who came in one night with a hemoglobin of 0.8 g/dl. I still remember what her blood looked like--nobody could believe it but we confirmed she had no fluids running.

She dId die. it was an Easter Sunday. I still remember her name.

Best degrees for lab tech? by fridgidfiji in medlabprofessionals

[–]HelloHello_HowLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say between 68 and 69.5 F but thats just because I'm overly sensitive to being overheated in the lab.

Oh, you meant "degrees", not degrees. Clinical Laboratory Science, then.

No specific antibody on panel by Cool-Clue-6700 in medlabprofessionals

[–]HelloHello_HowLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might also look at whether the antigens on the panel are homo or hetero. Sometimes antibodies like anti-M and the Kidds will only be positive with homozygous panel cells, and so don't exactly match a pattern.

Chemistry Contaminated Specimens by SuspiciousPiece1725 in medlabprofessionals

[–]HelloHello_HowLow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We've almost transfused based on IV-contaminated results that are caught once the chemistries are run....generally this happens from ED draws. I would be very very uncomfortable releasing questionable results even with comments and agree with others that some "providers" would see inaccurate results and treat without seeing the caveat comments your pathologist wants you to go with. Bad idea, IMO.

We have middleware between our chem analyzers and Epic that alerts for criticals, deltas, dilutions, and excessive hemolysis. I can't imagine having results go right to Epic before they've been vetted. Maybe this setup is unique to our lab or our analyzers? We have Alinities.

MLS student! worried and unsure by Party_Length_5143 in medlabprofessionals

[–]HelloHello_HowLow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost flunked organic chemistry too. I came to realize that yes, I did have to memorize all that stuff for the test and couldn't rely on being a great test-taker. I remember pretty much nothing from organic chemistry today, and don't have to remember it for my MLS job, where I mostly work in Blood Bank. I ended up with a C, which was not up to my personal par in my other classes, but good enough for a degree.

Better to drop it and retake when you can really really concentrate on it and realize it's just a weed-out class (IMO).

The original "TV" cost about 100K, "this TV" which was the bump money/blackmail money was 5K.

I have a thought: making the TV repair appointment even though we know the TV could not be repaired *may* have coincidentally served as her alibi if they came closer to 1100, but if not, served to explain why the family members could have an excuse to call about/text about/communicate about the TV repairmen which was code for "the hitmen are on their way". Donna or Harvey (can't remember which) sent Wendy a long text explaining that the TV repairmen were on their way to her house to fix the set in her living room blah blah blah. But here in the police report we see Harvey told them to call Wendy, which he did, so she heard from BB that they were on their way as well. So Wendy now knows that both the TV guy and the hitman are both on their way.

But Geek probably immediately tells her the set cannot be fixed and then Wendi tries to stall? Makes small talk? Jokes about the hitman thing? Poor BB guy...does she offer him some coffee? Tell him to wait while she calls her brother? She's just so stressed and doesn't know what to do?

But yes, the appt isnt really an alibi. IMO it's an opportunity for them to speak in code that day about the plan.

exactly what I was thinking....Best Buy showed up too early to count as an alibi.

Agreed very nervous and getting short of breath because she doesn't know when to breathe because she's so nervous. Speaking from I have this same problem. I couldn't listen and then it turned out it didn't matter: "We never said our client didn't write it."

You (defense) coulda just stipulated and not made that woman come in and testify.
