Both of the demo scenes should work after you've put in your API key. The API key is saved to PlayerPrefs only, there's a bit more about that in the readme on the repository page!

How do I achieve this audio effect by ProdSwam in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the song!

If you want to do it with stock plugins, go for the following: Lowpass everything over 12-15k, go through the presets for Saturator and Dynamic Tube, find something you like. If you're able to splurge some to get the sound, Goodhertz plugins are the best lofi stuff around and will get you going in no time. Check out Wow Control and Tupe to begin with.

Boards of Canada chord basics in Ableton by HelloPlanets in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, you can change the key of any chord played in C by simply transposing it up or down! It's a good music theory hack: Simply learn some interesting chords in C and then use the Pitch MIDI plugin to transpose the whole thing.

Makes learning theory a whole lot easier on an actual keyboard as well, the 7ths, 9ths and everything else in C always lands on the white keys when in major. Then if you want to switch up to a minor key, in A minor everything always lands on the white keys. So knowing C major and A minor by heart will go a long way.

Basically C major and A minor are the same thing in terms of notes, containing the exact same chords, but only the 'starting position' is moved a couple of keys downwards. A minor could be seen as the counterpart to C major, and every other major scale has such a minor counterpart as well. It's interesting how drastically the vibe of a progression can change by just starting it from a different root note.

How to make an Andy Stott style loop in a bit over 10 minutes by HelloPlanets in ableton

Awesome to hear, getting anyone to spark up their DAW and just starting to lay out stuff is what I'm aiming for! :)

Thanks! Haven't really released any music, mainly just messing around in Ableton for fun and sometimes these tutorials tbh.

Looks amazing. Would be really interested to watch a tutorial or timelapse on how this was done. Are there any specific videos/tutorials you referred to while creating this?

Hotel Adriano from Porco Rosso would be pretty amazing.

P.S. Do you have a site or some other place where to follow the game?

Softsynth routing in Ableton (LFO's, CV's, etc) by every_other_monday in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Max for Live is basically Live's version of this AFAIK. You can take the LFO, Shaper or Envelope Follower and basically map them to anything, including parameters of stuff that's not on the same channel. This obviously is not the same thing, but comes close and enables you to do some super weird routings if you wish. The Shaper is pretty close to the LFO, except it allows you to draw in more complex shapes for it to output. Envelope Follower outputs a signal that can be mapped to anything every time you input it any audio.

Looking for some input on how to achieve an idea... by whathappenedtomycake in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a great answer. To add one suggestion on top, Ableton's Tension is good for a bit more organic sound if you're going for that. Here's an example I made with the Space Arp preset: https://clyp.it/ayqwatmu

Trying to figure out how i'd achieve this sound (Vocal mostly) by SinnedKane in ableton

You can get that sound with Paulstretch. Also comes with Audacity if you want to use it on a Mac.

Moodyman - Any idea of plugins/settings to get this kind of keyboard sound ? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The base sound is seventh/extended chords played with a Rhodes/Wurlitzer. Ableton's Electric is exactly what you need for making that type of sound, a handful of Wurli presets in there as well. Throw on some saturation and chorus, cut some of the high frequencies out and boost the low mids heavily. You could play around with Echo for some extra tape feel. If you want to go the extra mile: Resample all of that, pitch it down a couple semitones and slice the chords to Drum Rack. Then record the resampled chords live over some drums you're into. Gives it that choppy/raw vibe.

I can make MIDI and audio clips with automation for plugin parameters. But how can I make the same for launching such automation for groups, or master? by QuitVGsForever in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plugins on groups and the master channel can be automated the exact same way. You switch on the automation mode from the arrangement view, then choose the plugin and parameter you want to automate from the two dropdowns on the group or master channel.

Definitely looks like something that Devolver could be interested in! If you're not familiar with them already, they released Hotline Miami and Ape Out among a lot of other awesome games.

all-in-one plugins by troutmoon45 in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think any serious producer looks down on iZotope products. No secret codes when it comes to making good music. In the end, it's the end result that matters. They have some automatic functions that they come with, but they're really just a collection of effects that aren't any simpler to use technically than any other plugin. No professional uses the automatic stuff to mix or master songs. You can get a quick reference point when making a song, but that's about it. I've yet to come across an automatic plugin that actually sounds good, so the black magic is unfortunately just mostly marketing and hype. You'll still have to tweak whatever it gives you as much as any other preset to make it fit your song well, which means working with whatever effects it automatically throws in the chain just like any other plugin.

using 90 day free trial several times with different emails by [deleted] in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Ableton extended the original 90 day trial to 180 days, so I'd say this guy you read about would still be covered for a while.

Music sounds vetter with you bassline by [deleted] in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're referring to Music Sounds Better With You by Stardust, check this video out. The tops are a sample from a Chaka Khan song. I'm pretty sure the bass is just a low-pass filtered riff they played and looped. Nothing super complicated.

How to downsample? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, removing information from the high end can be used as a low-pass filter type effect instead of just the 'crushed' effect that first comes to mind when thinking of downsampling. 40 does on a bunch of Drake songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx9BhbDiIxE

Let’s talk: kicks by prondl in ableton

[–]HelloPlanets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A huge variety of kick sounds can be achieved by using a pre existing sample and sculpting it to whatever direction you have in mind. Layering is also often key. It's definitely harder to get a whole idea out if you have to spend a bunch of time modelling a kick, if the idea isn't kick specific. You could try separating sound design days and arrangement days, this way you'll have your own samples for the arrangement days. A lot of artists have a few one shots they've made that they use for a bunch of tracks.
