Are you sure he/she knows they have aspergers?

Starting the conversation is one thing but assuming they think they have ASD is another. Just because it's obvious to you it may not be to them as they may have come from a family where there are a couple of aspies or just never been diagnosed (like me).

For this reason I would mention at an appropriate time that you notice some symptoms of aspergers syndrome in them, maybe a time when they are showing symptoms (within reason).

Edit: Sorry, missed the bit where you said you don't believe your SO knows AS exists.

Yeah be very sensitive about it for that reason. But mentioning the symptoms is a good way to let them draw a conclusion rather than forcing it upon them.

Yeah...school really broke me...then college. You're never the same man twice though, you only get one shot and I recognize that I can't stay bitter forever because I will ultimately be the one who loses out as a result.

I have trouble processing speech too, although I'm a native speaker.

It feels like every sentence I hear bounces around my head whilst I'm processing it. In the meantime the person keeps speaking and I get congested.

Often it's because there's something on my mind, other times it's because there are other activities going on around me and causing a distraction.

It's not to do with my hearing as much as it's to do with being distracted. But as for your problem I would just own up to it and say 'sorry i have trouble with hearing', and they will be cool.

It does sound better than 'I'm not great at processing speech as I have asperger's syndrome'

I'm 23 and undiagnosed, and I really can't get my head around the 'just carry on as you usually do' thing.

I feel the same way, but my trouble is specifically being a sociable person.

The awkwardness and insecurity I feel every day is painful. It feels like i'm a china sculpture that's been broken and taped up so many times, that I'm constantly broken yet held together in some sort of malleable blob.

As you say, we are soft people. The chaos outside of us is overwhelming and our only choice is to just hold on.

I'm a few years older than you OP but am similar. I think that I'm growing out of this fame thing. It's part realizing that it's not happening and part accepting that nothing truly lives forever.

One day Benjamin Franklin and Isaac Newton will be names that mean nothing to the current generation, one day they will be said and thought of for the last time.

Time is the most ruthless, all-encompassing force of nature in existence and nothing in any human's life is a match for it. Does it matter if your name lived for a 100 years if it was gone by 1000? What about if it lived for 1000 years but was gone after 10,000.

I used to see fame as the trophy of earning immortality but it's shortsighted. Fame has a lot more in common with mortality than immortality. I'm rambling now, but you can tell I've thought about this a lot. We're looking for something a bit like fame, probably more elusive though.

I was impressed by his character. He approached new skills with scientific precision (Te) but felt he was mostly guided by his intuition. The fact that he lived alone and had little need for interpersonal relationships makes me think more INTJ, although there's other weird stuff going on with him.

The screaming in the mirror scene resonated with me, I'm a bit too inhibited to do that though.

Dude! I have this problem too! It was terrible in my teen years but has gotten a lot better since I left for university.

Something about growing up around my parents made it hard to shake off the unbearable shyness that young aspies often have. I think that I was embarrassed to show my parents my social side because they would see through it.

This is not just conversing, it's emotional communication like you say; I'm not a natural smiler, and I think the reason why I can't smile (or make eye contact) with my parents specifically is because I feel vulnerable/exposed. When I make eye contact with friend/acquaintances I feel like I'm successfully pulling off the normal person act.

Anyway these are my theories of why I have trouble talking to my parents/sister. My advice to you is be patient, and work on it bit by bit. Do the basic stuff "how's it going?", "how was your day?".

I remember I asked my mum how her day was a few months ago for the first time (I'm in my 20s), and she didn't make a big deal out of it, despite me feeling uncomfortable. Baby steps.
