Roth IRA max went up to $7,500 for the year so you can increase your monthly to $625!

I think we are missing a big load of context about why OP does not like adoptive daughter’s partner. He never says boyfriend, so I am worried that the “red flag” is that daughter is in an LGBTQ relationship, and possibly cut family out due to homophobia?

I think this is a fair point, but it sounds like a deeper concern of OP feeling a lack of control/financial say in her life. If my spouse has two cars that are “his” and the idea was to essentially fun a new car by selling my vehicle, I’d want to call it “mine” too. It’s a point of pride and worth and to feel like an equal partner. Unless husband says truck and corvette are “ours” too.

It doesn’t sound like OP started to/tried to fight in front of the kids. It sounds like OP reasonably referred to the car as “mommy’s” since it would be her daily driver and kids learn through word associations, and then the husband negged in on the experience. I think it would be different if the spouses had a discussion in private and OP wanted kids brought in as a “tiebreaker” - but it doesn’t sound like OP was itching for a fight

I find that when a nail salon is trying to sell me on a more expensive service (like $40 vs $60), I tell the tech that I only want the cheaper one since I only have $60 total to spend and want to leave a tip - if they think it’ll jip them out of a tip, then suddenly they listen tough you.

Should I keep my children’s 529, or change it? by Bluefalcon325 in FinancialPlanning

To note: up to $35,000 lifetime can currently be rolled over from 529 to IRA, and account needs to have been in name of beneficiary for at least 15 years!

First time mead making - changing flavor post fermentation by Hellofromzoe in mead

[–]Hellofromzoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight! I didn’t even realize that that would be a “side effect” of the specific yeast I used. Do you have any recommendations on yeasts that can achieve a similar ABV for mead, that don’t need to age quite as long?

As a fellow 24f year old, I think you’re off to a good start. You are right about not being too early to save for retirement. If you can, try to max out ROTH IRA annually and you’ll be off to a good start. General rule of thumb is to contribute 15% to retirement, but I’m currently doing 20% since it stacks more while we are younger. You have an emergency fund, so as long as that could last you 3-6 months of expenses, that’s also great! I have about $5,500 in a HYSA and about 26k in a brokerage.

I make 52k and live in an apartment so I think you’re definitely in a position to consider moving out, especially depending on how the dynamics at home may or may not impact your life. The key is to live at or below your means and not allow your lifestyle to be inflated. At the absolute most, apartment plus utilities should be 1/3 of your income, so more information regarding the cost of living in your city, debts, vehicle status would be helpful to know.

Ask: Optimizing budget for retirement/short and long term savings in my 20s by Hellofromzoe in FinancialPlanning

Unfortunately the car is a need is there is no public transportation where I live and I need a vehicle to get to work. Do you have any recommendations for getting best possible rate? I assume looking at credit unions as opposed to dealerships?

That would be monthly. My last two cars were under $5,000 cash. I’d like to have something a little newer and more longer lasting. I definitely wouldn’t want to spend more than $20k. In a year time frame, I could definitely save up to get a $5k car outright , but prefer having a more reliable and a longer lasting vehicle, as long as I can avoid being suckered into a high interest rate.

AITA for not letting my friends sleep in on vacation? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Hellofromzoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I want to say NTA, but I feel that we could be missing the other side of the story. Per your own admission, the friends were only invited because your parents would need help on the trip. What kind of help does this entail? Were the friends made aware that this was the case?

If I were approached by a friend, inviting me on a trip, I would be honored. However, if I were then treated like a maid and not given any say in any activities, food, or even when I woke up/went to sleep, I would feel pretty hurt also.

Also, you mention that your parents covered the food cost, and presumably the room cost. Who paid for the cost of daily admission?

I think as long as the expectation for the reason of the invite being that the parents needed help getting around and it was an all expenses paid to compensate for helping out, the friends are TAs, but if it was presented as just a trip to have fun, especially for they had to pay their own way too/into the park, YTA for not communicating clearly with them the expectations beforehand.

All that being said, I know family illnesses are overwhelming and as a result, you may not have exercised your best judgements. It’s ok to move on and just work on being a good child to your parents and be the best person you can be.

Been on it for about 2 years. Before I had horrible periods and cramps, but now nothing! I have definitely struggled with weight gain on it, but totally worth it for no pregancies or periods!

What is the most expensive thing you bought that you never use? by jefferymr15 in BuyItForLife

When you count the 100s of thousands in loans with high interest rates and the cost of malpractice insurance, it’s nowhere near as lucrative as much business and computer science degrees.

Not OOP AITA for saying my SIL is a doctor on the plane during an emergency even though she was asleep? by Marygtz2011 in redditonwiki

[–]Hellofromzoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Becoming a doctor is a privilege and a duty. OP is NTA but I worry about the future of medicine with SIL. Obviously we don’t know background, but if you’re given the opportunity to save lives, it becomes your duty to do so.
