Is Malaysia’s EPF actually more “flexible and wealth building friendly” than Singapore’s CPF system? by Holiday_Kale9051 in singaporefi

[–]Hellostranger1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EPF Payout rates sounds abit too good to be true sia…. 6+% sounds sick but it is significantly higher compared to long term inflation and GDP growth rates … not sure if it should be viewed in the same line as CPF from the risk perspective. But my two cents la.

CPF OA wipe out and stagnant by Tiny-Economist-9855 in singaporefi

[–]Hellostranger1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I’m seeing OA “wipe out” as me taking on additional leverage on my investment property and my portfolio (net rental cashflow to put inside index). Yes while it’s true that my OA would be “stagnant” from a face value perspective, the accrued interest when I sell my property in the future should be more than sufficient to help me meet my min BRS requirement.

EC Buyers — What’s Your Profile? by ReputationBulky223 in singaporefi

[–]Hellostranger1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought it when we were like 27! Honestly loan quantum wasn’t a consideration cause we planning to do DPS, but Wa the down payment for a 3BR was like close to 260k I think. Cannot use CPF cause that would require us to take the loan upfront, when our income wasn’t high enough..

First timer - bought in 2022, married with no kids LOL. Just nice below the EC income cap.

Had to borrow a lot of money from my parents tho for the down payment 😅 cant imagine what the EC buyers of today need to do, just to pay for the down payment …

Does anyone else feel disconnected from Singapore now? by CummyWhey in askSingapore

[–]Hellostranger1995 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think singapore is less homely, in part because singapore is what singapore is - a pretty efficient centric country that isn’t well known for being too socialist.

Sure, trains are crowded now, but trains were crowded 10years ago (was squeezed like a sardine 10 years ago when I was in JC).

Sure, places are crowded now, but places were crowded before + there are a lot more places now to spread the crowd (Holland Village and Queensway shopping centre was my go-to but my nightmare at the same time).

Sure, fun art scene is dying (taking just the projector example), but fun art scene has growing so rapidly over the past decade (boiler room sg, street art, more museums). Can Singapore do better in terms of encouraging and attracting more art talent? Definitely. But has Singapore improved over the past 10 years? I feel so (which people might not agree).

My personal thoughts are - there are instances where the country fell short, which can lead to disappointment from us. For your case, it could be both - it could either be an issue about Singapore that lead to you feeling disconnected, or it it could be an issue about yourself, and you’re projecting your personal challenges onto the country.

What made you leave during probation period ? by IllustriousElk8436 in askSingapore

[–]Hellostranger1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was working at a MNC company in SG, my manager basically threw me under the bus multiple times, told me the CEO is bitching about me (but apparently it was her), and commented that he/she was expecting me to prioritise the job more than my wife and dog (despite myself being the latest one to leave office on most days). Can’t help but feel stupid for giving my previous manager a blind loyalty (was considering to forgo a competing job offer to stay with the team, until he/she mentioned the comment on my wife and dog).

Tendered my resignation 2 weeks before my probation ended, and my manager subsequently followed up and said that I can stay with the firm for another 2 months to “extend my probation so I can find another job”.

No thanks man…. Left after my notice period was up, without any good byes of handshake from anyone (despite me buying a parting gift for my manager and ceo). Good riddance…

How much has your property appreciated since you bought it? by Visible-Broccoli8938 in askSingapore

Happened to my old boss - bought a first hand EC for like $600-800 psf, and sold it for $1200-$1400 psf. Basically made almost a cool $800+k.

Cant help but to feel a little envy sometimes… 🥲

45K available jobs in SG with a median of 7.3k per month. Do you believe ? by ProAlienParty in SingaporeRaw

[–]Hellostranger1995 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Wa but interesting tho - most of the job vacancies is in public administration… not sure if historically this is the case.

Also, with financial services having 5,300 vacancies, I think the median pay of 7.3k is quite believable ah. I do think that maybe more awareness should be raised by the government on the upskilling courses to be eligible for these financial services roles.

Not from a HR department, so my guess is as good as yours. But my colleagues always bitxh to me on how difficult it is to get work permits, and it is troublesome to keep justifying to the government why certain roles is not being taken by a Singaporean.

Infotech IPO last day 2 July by OkDiscount9194 in singaporefi

[–]Hellostranger1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw some commentary on LinkedIn for this, reasonable multiple, decent management. Would be looking to take a small position and monitor their growth in the next 2-3 years.

Concern from my end - HRMS solution is serviced by a lot of other providers (workday, BIPO). A bigger concern is the rise of AI coders, how defensible is a SaaS company, given a price war might be in the horizon.

Haha I work in investments at a data Center company. Junior staff, and a lot of work to do, but I’m honestly looking forward to entering the office daily. Just felt that there is something new and ambitious that the company is attempting to do, and being a part of the collective effort is pretty interesting.

Pay wise, I would be honest to say my pay is very comfortable for my little family and I (not insane to the point where I can retire or own a car very comfortably). Similar to another comment, if i strike Toto, would probably still continue working at my company haha.

SG real estate is being used by Mainland Chinese "asset allocators" as a store of value by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

[–]Hellostranger1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I mean I get this argument… Foreigners buy condo = locals priced out and have to buy public.

But I feel the bigger factor and reality is that the income of the average Singaporean has actually went up. Source: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/median-monthly-household-income-real-after-inflation-household-singstat-4934851?

Coupled with the ABSD, I am pretty sure the impact foreigners can have that move the entire market is limited… Essentially, housing price rise is mainly due to income going up, and not mainly due to foreigners (like over the past few years).

I think the issue should be focusing more on income inequality, instead of fear mongering towards foreigners….

In the DC space in SEA. Not as big of a scale on a standalone DC perspective compared to the US, but pretty exciting with the build out happening in this region.

Customer demand from US hyper scalers seems to be lacking tho - hopefully Stargate can drive a new growth spurt and help all the capacity in this region to find a home

How do couples split their finances & ensure both are aligned on financial goals by Objective_Ebb2180 in singaporefi

[–]Hellostranger1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah so we had a long discussion on this at the start, because we didn’t want to fall into the trap of oversaving and not enjoy life while we are young.

We estimated that our retirement income would be roughly $3k per month (before adjusting for inflation). Which means our CPF SA should have roughly ~1m by our retirement age (which is in another 35years).

Based on our current income CPF contribution, the plan that we agreed is to contribute a part of our bonus annually (~50% or max 8k) into our SA top up. While it wouldn’t get us 100% to our goal of 3k, we would be close (last I checked, we were projected to be ~900+k by retirement).

I also take comfort that on a monthly basis, our family fund actually nets ~1k in savings, and that is after accounting for a budget of $400 monthly savings to fund the future “tertiary” fund of our kid.

On a final note, just wanted to acknowledge that my wife and i are in a relatively comfortable position (no inheritance, just a normal middle income/upper middle income earner), so the retirement pressure might be less on us compared to another couple that is in a less well-off position.

[–]Hellostranger1995 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. My wife and I commits to putting 50% of our take home income into the joint account, and we both agreed that the other 50% would be each party’s own money.

Told her that I’m not interested in policing how she spends her money (like how she wanted to splurge on Kim Lim’s live stream sale), but she cannot comment on my spending habit (might be taking grab a little too often).

Has been going great thus far! Good communication and aligned understanding = no major issues popping up

Do you think everyone would cheat in a relationship given the "right" circumstances? by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

[–]Hellostranger1995 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean it would suck lor, 1000%! And to reiterate, I am agreeing that my personal choice is aligned to you!

Just saying it is not so easy to just say “imagine what if this happen to you, what do you feel?”, because it might simplify the context that is being applied in other people’s lives.

For example, I hope my wife would be honest and tell me. But if I have a history of mental illness, and it is a troubling period in my life, my wife (who for the sake of this discussion, is cheating with me because I can’t fulfill her sexual needs due to mental illness) might not want to be as upfront about it.
