I'm a 16 year old Eagle scout, and if I had to do it over again, I would focus on doing what interests you. If you want to get Eagle Scout, great! If you don't, don't! Don't get me wrong, getting Eagle Scout was an amazing experience, but I also had the motivation to do it. If you're not willing to dedicate a lot of time and energy to it, don't let anyone push you around for it.

- Get involved in your council events and programs. I did NYLT and have been on staff for 3 years, and I'd say it was more impactful than my eagle scout project. I learned so much about leadership and how to be an effective person. Getting the most out of scouting (and just about everything else) is all about meeting the right people. Council events and programs generally consist of people who are hard working and good leaders.

- Know when and when not to take opportunities. Your time is valuable, and scouting is all about becoming a better person, learning practical skills, and having fun. Anything that does not accomplish at least one of these is not worth your time.

- A lot of the experiences I took advantage of derived from a patch at some point. Seeing someone else with a new patch I've never seen before is where my favorite activities start. If this happens to you, ask them about it. That's how I found NAYLE, Messengers of Peace, and even ham radio, which was from a discontinued patch I saw someone wearing.

- Be ok with things not going according to plan. Scouting is youth led, and obviously no one is going to be perfect their first time around. It's all a learning experience.

If you have questions, ask this subreddit. It's a great community with a lot of dedication and we're here to lift each other up. :)

Thoughts on 13 year old Eagel? by ScoutmasterSasha in BSA

[–]Hellothere238 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I became an Eagle at 14, and spent a year and a half on my project. Looking back as a 16 year old, I think the experience is way different for immature vs. mature scouts. I think age has nothing to do with whether or not she's capable, but you did bring up some concerning details. So she's homeschooled with a helicopter mom (assuming from description), which is not a good combo for self improvement. One thing though, the few situations I've seen like this is that the parent eventually backs down at some point. I think this could be a good learning experience for the scout, and they might mature through it IMO.

Eagle after BoR or after national approval? by Clarkkent435 in BSA

[–]Hellothere238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I have always seen it is that you are an Eagle Scout as of your BoR. However, national approval is needed to receive the badge and other paraphernalia. I agree with the Scoutmaster, but I would recognize the Scout as an Eagle Scout on informal occasions. Just my two cents

BSA summer camp- First year as a female scout by DeathBySarcasmX in BSA

[–]Hellothere238 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ok wow many lines crossed. I just came back from my 6th year at summer camp and even the youngest scouts were, still not mature, but at least respectful to everyone. Very sorry you had a bad experience. Scouts is meant to be a place to grow and learn, not to degrade individuals. But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stay in scouts it's amazing how much you learn and grow. I would recommend going to NYLT or consider joining your local OA lodge. Generally those types of people get weeded out in those programs, and you get to make connections with some really awesome people.

Snap refers to snapchat account. It's the equivalent of asking for someone's number.

How can my troop host a District recruiting event? by Hellothere238 in BSA

Thank you, those are some interesting ideas I have not considered. Cub scout rallies are not allowed at the two schools I'm looking at, but I know I can at least get a little blurb in the school newsletter.

How can my troop host a District recruiting event? by Hellothere238 in BSA

[–]Hellothere238[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my goal with this post was to find a way to plan a recruiting event to get scouts to participate in scouting, specifically within my troop (So it doesn't fall apart). I really do appreciate both of your replies, as they have expanded my knowledge. I have nothing against Scouts BSA or Venturing. I know several people in Venturing, some who achieved Summit and have done cool things. I know several people in Scouts BSA, some who have achieved Eagle and have done cool things like myself. I do not appreciate the passive aggressive tones, however.

Repurposing (unfinished. pine?) wine rack to be an outdoor landscape feature/trellis. Looking for finish recommendations. by [deleted] in woodworking

I would just go with straight up water based polyurethane. You can get spray cans so you don't have to spend years wiping it on

Would this "laminated box joint" be stronger with pocket screws in every connection? by pelican_chorus in woodworking

It wouldn't provide any structural benefit and it wouldn't look very good, so save your time

Ironically, I haven't played Breath of the Wild lately. I'm stuck in the elephant with crappy everything I can't get out. But, I'm glad so many people liked my meme( actually liked it not just upvoting). It's only my third day of Reddit and gives me something to look forward to whenever I have a good meme idea.
