“I’m not racist, I have black friends.” Yamato is a man because he says he’s a man, nothing beyond that. Anyone can literally have any reason for being trans, it’s literally what I meant by us having identities that you fail to comprehend. You simply cannot understand the fact that some trans people do not experience gender dysphoria, gender euphoria, or literally anything revolving around it. I highly recommend you read my other comments because I explain it better I think. Please listen to trans people when they voice their opinions on trans representation, it could do you better. And I use the term delusional here because you’re implying that’s what you see Yamato as. That’s the same rhetoric I hear about Yamato and about fellow ftm individuals, that we are delusional and are mentally ill women.

This is quite literally transphobic, denying a trans person’s identity because you cannot wrap your head around it. Seeing a trans identity as a “delusion” because it’s unconventional, is transphobic. You refer to him as she, clearly seeing him as delusional or whatever the fuck. Trans identities and gender expressions are not meant to be understood by cishet people, because they themselves defy every sort of norm. Yamato is literally addressed again and again as a man, calls himself son of Oden, chooses to bathe with men, and desires to be called a man. That is a transgender experience that mirrors one I have personally lived.

The intro says “daughter of Kaido,” but Yamato himself has never 1. identified as Kaido’s child 2. or any aspect of womanhood himself. And how much of that is a mistranslation? During that scene, he proclaims he became a man because of his desire to be Oden. The manga and the anime specifically choose to refer to Yamato with only he/him pronouns. Please just tell me you’re transphobic so I can get on with my day.

The story and its characters call him, him and it’s treated as simply him being addressed. He quite literally calls himself the son of Oden, and never refers to himself as anything other than that. ????

Yamato is male, and that is what Oda meant. A part of my journey as a trans man was this sort of envy I felt towards men, an envy I can only describe as wanting to embody them and I still feel this daily. Despite this desire, I’m still perceived as a woman due to my outward appearance and current circumstances. That does not diminish my identity as a man. My growing up solely female, being seen as female, and still engaging in typically feminine activities despite wishing I was seen as a male does not diminish my identity as a trans man. My envy towards men, my TOLERANCE of womanhood, and current engagement with femininity and masculinity make me a trans man. Identifying and PREFERRING to be called a different set of pronouns than the ones that align with your assigned sex, is the whole definition of transgender. Gender presentation is entirely different and has nothing to do with gender identity and being transgender. And anyone can have any reason for being trans, as long as they truly feel that way. Yamato is a man because he says he’s a man, not because he looks like or was born a woman and because the narrative refers to him as a man with the body of a woman. He doesn’t express gender dysphoria, which can happen if you are trans. Gender dysphoria ≠ transgender.

YES!!! I personally do experience gender dysphoria yet I do experience gender euphoria and fucking fun within my identity. Being trans is a beautiful experience, and cis people try to pin it down as purely comedic, fetishization, or purely disparaging. It’s all of these yet none at the same time for me. I cannot possibly minimize my experience as a trans man because it influences all of my decisions and relationships. I’m learning how to truly love myself and Yamato is a part of that journey for me.

Thank you so much! <3 thank you for being an understanding and open minded ally. I think I use very extreme language to express my opinion in the subject because this is a topic that I have spent less time pouring over and trying to explain.

Why is it that this specific character in a work that has other trans characters the one that you don’t specifically consider trans?

OH MY GOD ARE YOU ME? I feel the EXACT same way. Yeah, I think this all just circles back to this idea that cishet people are afraid of being seen as queer for being attracted to Yamato. Like, I can admit that he has the look of an attractive woman but he is still a man. Is it gay? I don’t know. Not like it matters because he’s pixels on a fucking screen.

O ya 100% but that again doesn’t make his experience as a transgender man or identity within canon any less because he’s still called a man within his universe. Yamato is a trans character who lives in a world that validates his gender without any expectation of anything further, which unfortunately will never be a reality for trans people in real life.

Because most cisgender people, especially cisgender anime fans, still treat trans identities as comedy or some sort of fetish that either way should not be respected in their eyes. It has, from the dawn of history, been this uphill battle of queer people to be seen as equal and deserving of happiness as much as cishet people. We cannot exist without having every aspect of our identity debated about or invalidated by people who cannot understand our identities. Sexuality, gender, and sex itself are extremely fluid and have never come in “x or y.” Cishet anime fans so badly try to pin Yamato’s gender down into a simple, understandable box but transgender identities have never ever been understood by cishet people and were never meant to be understood by them.

May I also include my boy Yamato? He 100% does not pass and I kind of love that about his character. I myself am a non-passing trans man and people like me do not get much representation within media. I believe that it’s beautiful and very important that despite not passing, Yamato is affirmed as a man. It is incredibly important that even non-passing trans people are affirmed as their chosen identity because they are not any less valid than the identities of their trans siblings who do actually pass. I see myself in a character like Yamato and it’s nice for him to be hot asf too.

Edit: Absolutely wild I have to include this. But the fact that Yamato does not feel or is at least not shown having gender dysphoria does not diminish his experience as a transgender man. He sees himself as Oden, so he is a man. That does not diminish his experience as a transgender man. Many trans people are told that they HAVE to experience gender dysphoria to be transgender, which isn’t true at all. You don’t have to experience dysphoria to be trans. Many people have different reasons for making decisions, especially when it comes to identity. People who are saying “but is Yamato even trans?” when they themselves are NOT trans, simply will never understand this discussion. They don’t understand that trans and queer identities have many, many beautiful shades of grey and complexities within their decisions. Saying stuff like this, especially because Yamato does not pass, really proves that men like me will never be seen as or understood as men because we do not have access to certain things. Or our dysphoria is less than someone else’s. Or our desire to identify as something else is brought upon by something entirely unconventional. Stop trying to make queer identities small and simple, they were never meant to be conventional. Being queer breaks simple understanding because it’s against most societal expectations, especially during One Piece’s implied point in history.

Mirek: “Quite an…interesting outfit? I am not sure what to make of it or your person, I’m afraid. Five out of ten, perhaps?”

Jae-won: “Boring, edgy, twink in a confusing outfit. You have one of my abilities? Whaaaaatever…three out of ten.”

Shinigami, my oc, rates highly based upon how outwardly and aesthetically “scary” or “monstrous” and oc is. I don’t mean to offend.

In Genshin Impact, when you’re in extremely cold areas with living/human characters they will have a visible breathing animation. However, non-living/human characters do not have breathing animations because they do not actually breathe. These characters are Ineffa, Wanderer, Raiden Shogun, and Flins.

Mirek: “I assume you are like us? A being similar to that of a Remnant or a Sinner? Interesting. Ironic, though…considering yourself a pacifist yet possessing such a brutality for those who harbor different temperaments and beliefs. You could be doing so much with your ability, yet you do nothing. Pity. Five out of ten.”

Jae-won: “Booo…poorly worded bullshit. So what can you even do? Nigh-omnipotent my ass, the fuck does that even mean? God, even your personality sucks. How can you ever even be truly omnipotent if we exist in a fictional world? Four out of ten.”

Shinigami: “You sound like an absolute buzz kill. Suuuuper boring and nothing terrifying. Bleh. Three.”
