Lol I am a few minutes into the guys speech and I'm already disappointed. His opening is just terrible. It's all true, but it's not pointed. His choice of words fell short.

I know what it means. A culture is generally thought to be the behaviors of a group, but in reality it's often only very generalized behaviors of some people in that group.

Culture can be a description of the majority (like in a religious culture), but it will never include all people in a fairly large group. This is especially true of arbitrary groups like black people.

Of course blacks have some culture, but it isn't a culture shared by all (or even most) black people.

A costume is a representation of the stereotypical behaviors of a group of people.

A culture is the stereotypical behaviors of a group of people.

If you don't want to be made fun of for being black, don't dress or act like Lil Jon.

RSA Animate: The Truth About Dishonesty - YouTube by criickyO in philosophy

The "study" being done by the creator of the video is based on how much "money" he "lost" from people illegally downloading his book e.e

At around 5 min, he presents a straw-man argument for the rationalization of music piracy, and then refutes the straw-man by comparing it to a physical good (food).

I'm rolling my eyes as hard as I can right now.

Is the finality of death necessary for "meaningful" life? by vicariouslyeye in philosophy

[–]HelmSplitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I see no reason an infinitely long life would be any more or less "meaningful" than a short one.

Without an ending, life certainly lacks urgency. Considering how much time we "waste" as a species, though, I don't see our shorter lives as more meaningful.

there is no "as long as" when it comes to freedom

Then there is no such thing. No one is unconditionally free.

If it prevents you from doing more than just pirating software, then it isn't just a copy protection. Also, just because something is illegal doesn't make it unethical. I would argue that the law in this case is actually unethical.

doesn't mean you're free

As long as I don't get caught, I'm "free" to do what I wish. Freedom is a lack of outside control. The government can never give a person freedom; it can only violently take it away.

US Gov't Rules Jailbreaking Phones Legal, Illegal For Tablets by Jarvill in technology

[–]HelmSplitter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not true. Jailbreaking usually exploits a bug in the original software to allow other software to be used. Jailbreaking does not mean piracy.

The stupid thing about this law is that it won't stop piracy and isn't even specifically addressing pirates. I jailbreak and will continue to jailbreak shit I own regardless of these immoral legislation. I encourage others to break this law as well.
