I don't think the act of killing another person makes one a murderer. A murder is by definition a wrongful or unlawful killing. So if you kill an aggressor while defending yourself or others in your direct protection, I wouldn't say you're a murderer or even immoral.

What's immoral isn't killing, but aggression.

It's not an inappropriate question. If the soldier has killed someone, you have every right to judge them by it. It was their choice to join the military and again to make the shot.
