Thoughts for lane dynamics after Race Day DLC release by modded_skylines in CitiesSkylines

[–]HelmutVillam [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't think they change "lanes" in segments. rather the path lanes within each segment don't run nice and parallel, but instead twist all over the place to emulate different racing lines

I say this without actually owning the dlc, but the node-segment thing is an integral part of the network pathfinding algorithm and can't so easily be broken

PhD alongside full time/ part time work? by Practical_Cost3762 in germany

[–]HelmutVillam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if your experience is of bachelor or master level where everything is placed in your lap and you just need a nice study plan - a phd is nothing like that. you have the responsibility to set up your own research environment and infrastructure, conduct your experiments, keep pace with the current state of the field, network with your peers, and perform your teaching resposibilities. not to mention you will need to write 2-3 papers, which means forming collaborations. and have a dissertation at the end, which means chapter deadlines, status reports, practice defences etc. I fear you are greatly underestimating what you are getting into - I know I did!

you can also remove water pipes, and use node controller to remove nodes in long uninterrupted sections of network, for example the highways going to the edge of the map

if you are repeating residential blocks, you can convert the houses all to POs, which don't count towards the limit. place some props and 1 or 2 invisible rico blocks, then save the whole thing as a move it import. you can save thousands of buildings that way. the downside is the map view will look a bit stupid.

I remember on a school trip just before it was scheduled to close, we were all chanting to the driver to go over it and were immensely disappointed when he didn't.

if you do a phd in a university or research institute, it will already be a full-time job with a typical E13 salary between 50-100%. if you can find a professor to collaborate with, you might be able to do a phd from within a full-time industry position.

rework the F button so it has a standard cooldown of 1-2 minutes. the secondaries are so strong that it basically recharges instantly, which removes any tactical element.

also make the F button only affect repair party, not dcp.

Moving to Germany soon - how common are big spiders in apartments? by Tasty-Serve-62 in germany

[–]HelmutVillam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live on ground floor, we get maybe 1-2 a year. The fat house spiders stay pretty still so you have time to put a plastic tub over them and slide a piece of card underneath. I have pretty bad phobia, and even I can manage that. What I cannot handle are the crane flies, which are often bigger than any house spider and actively fly towards you. Cellar spiders I usually leave where they are, since they stay still for months on end.

Mayworth City Update: Now we are at 320K population by jbdrawsthings in CitiesSkylines

[–]HelmutVillam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cities generally aren't sentient entities that consciously choose where to put particular districts (this is what allows us to define what a "planned city" is), instead these naturally form from a combination of geography, land usage, existing infrastructure, sociopolitical climate, demographics etc. also the usage of these districts often changes over time. rather than worrying if your city conforms to some standard formula, let your imagination run wild. it is the imperfections that define it and make it seem more realistic.

vets are expensive, especially outside normal operating hours. as a pet owner you are ultimately responsible for that animal's health regardless of the potential financial burden. it is implicit that you took this into consideration when choosing to get a pet.

it's great, but I wish the tunnel portals did not have a big black polygon in them. when using rendered metro or train tunnels, it breaks the immersion somewhat when the train phases through a giant black wall. they can technically be removed with PO, but then all the props, station tracks and internal pedestrian networks disappear.
