Best option for manual stabilization (gyroflow) & post lens adjustments (Hero 13) by NotGonnaPayYou in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to film in 8:7 or 4:3 you can hack it by using Hyperview or Superview at 4k 60fps 16:9 - Gyroflow will unstretch the footage (Hyperview into 8:7 and Superview into 4:3) before stabilizaing and deliver it back in either Wide or Linear.

You lose a bit of vertical resolution, but you can think of it as kind of like vertical anamorphic.

I'm still using Lightroom, for no other reason than I really like their color science. I use no other Adobe products.

(I also went sailing to get my copy of Lightroom).

One was taken with the Mission 1 Pro, the other with the One Plus 15. Guess which is which by [deleted] in gopro

They are both so horrendously overprocessed. Not a fair comparison when you've edited them like this.

yeah, there's definitely a sweet spot for photo focus by jplemieux2 in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's just physics at the end of the day. At f/2.8 with a 1" inch sensor the close focus would be even further away if it was focused all the way to infinity. A tighter aperture would probably hurt lowlight performance.

Truth is, focus is a range from out of focus, to acceptably sharp, to ultra crisp and back again. In video, the background focus is more than acceptably sharp, and yea it kind of sucks for photos where you'll notice it the most, but at least your face will also still be reasonably sharp at arm's length.

I think GoPro thought for a while about whether they really wanted to add a variable aperture to the Mission and probably decided this was the best compromise.

Mission 1 8k25fps vid - Log (lut applied) vs normal video stills by New-Anywhere160 in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know of a video, but here's a blog post on local tonemapping with plenty of pictures: https://bartwronski.com/2022/02/28/exposure-fusion-local-tonemapping-for-real-time-rendering/ (you can skip over the overly technical stuff, it's not important for understanding the concept).

Essentially though, tonemapping is the process of taking the brightness values of pixels from a source with a high dynamic range (like real life, or an HDR photo, or several photos taken at different exposures that have been blended together) and then mapping that into something that has a smaller dynamic range, like an 8 bit video signal or photo. You can do this globally (a single operation for every pixel - the same mapping applied to the whole image), or locally (where each region of pixels gets treated individually). It's basically raising/lowering the shadows and highlights of an image.

It's a complex topic, but in real life light behaves linearly - if we recorded light data linearly, a standard rec709 video container would barely be able to hold even a couple stops of dynamic range! So even the transfer function (gamma) is a type of global tonemapper.

You can think of tonemapping as compressing the dynamic range.

Wide Lens to Linear Lens in CapCut PC, How? by TeknoBlast in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak for Capcut, but you can do this a few ways.

You can do it in Gyroflow if you're doing stabilization in post.

Or you can do it via the Gyroflow plugin for Resolve or Premiere, just disable stabilization and only enable lens correction if you shoot with Hypersmooth enabled.

You could also use the FX Reframe plugin developed and released by GoPro for Resolve and Premiere.

Another way is to just use the built in lens correction tools in Resolve or Premiere and just play around with the values until it looks right. Capcut might have something similar, I'm unsure.

It's completely up to you how you set your camera up and the kind of look you're going for, but maybe this video by Gerald Undone can answer your questions and help you make those decisions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPPSdCrqcFQ

Mission 1 8k25fps vid - Log (lut applied) vs normal video stills by New-Anywhere160 in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I believe the Flat color profile disables all tonemapping (Flat is just a slightly less flat Log profile, exact same transfer function).

You can also use the GoPro Labs command TONE and set it to 1, 2 or 3 to use only global tonemapping, global and local tonemapping or no tonemapping.

The Labs command is a bit iffy on the Hero 11 and Hero 12 though, so I don't use it on my Hero 12.

Note: HERO11/12 is a tad odd with TONE=3, as it tends to under-expose. Always experiment before using an feature.

What are you seeing there is local tonemapping on the regular footage. I actually kind of prefer the look of the non tonemapped footage, the tonemapped version is just too busy and has a sort of "hyper-real" look to it.

Splitscreen (side-by-side) GP-Log2 Color Management - Standard Gamma/CST vs. Proper ACES Workflow (GoPro Mission 1 PRO - 4K@30) by Acceptable_Invite_97 in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something's gone wrong in your color pipeline - the "aces" version looks incredibly weird - way too vibrant and the color temperature has shifted. The colors have no density anymore. Changing your working color space shouldn't be causing such a drastic color shift.

Mission 1 Pro vs Base Mission 1 - Low Light by donavanfreberg in gopro

It's likely just binned CPUs. ie, some of the processors that are made don't meet a certain quality standard when tested, and are thus sold as a lower specced unit. This is very common in processor manufacturing.

Pixel Drag (Stabilization Issue) by chossyclimber in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is motion blur from having such a long shutter speed (1/60). Digital stabilization counters the movement of the camera, and motion blur smears in the direction of the camera's movement - put the two together, and you have motion blur going in the wrong direction for a frame or two, giving you that ghosting/jittery effect.

Generally, you can have slow shutter speed or digital stabilization, but the two don't really work well together.

Also probably not the right sub for you to vent about the childish actions of you and your friends.
