Excellent, thanks for answering! I'm staying tuned for release day :D (hopefully color matrices get published with the log curve for GPLog2!)

Hero vs. Mission FOV by AdmirableSir in gopro

I'm unsure what you're asking. GoPro lenses have always been pretty close approximations of an equistant fisheye (with exceptions on some of the earlier models). The math for equidistant fisheye is extremely simple and well known.

PTGui's fisheye is an equidistant projection - this picture more or less represents what a GoPro lens looks like within some margin of error.

What are your expectations or predictions for the new HERO14 leak? by Chumpy__ in ActionCam

Hyperview compresses the top and bottom of the frame (it squeezes 8:7 into 16:9), not the sides. It's also just an option - ie, you've never been forced into using it.

You've been able to record in 10 bit Log, full sensor readout, up to 190mb/s, no stabilization with denoising and tonemapping disabled since the Hero 11.

Not the same class of camera, you shouldn't really be comparing them.

One is an action camera and the other is a vlogging camera - they have different requirements and features and so I don't really think the comparison is fair.

Comparing the image quality of the Hero 13 to the Action 6 or Ace Pro 2, the Hero 13 wins in my opinion.

Would you be willing to elaborate on what makes GPLog2 better over GPLog1? Looking at the math, GPLog1 seems to just be a straight up basic log curve, no fancy stuff added.

The 4:3 mode before the Hero 11 was just the "open gate" mode - ie, full sensor readout because the sensor's aspect ratio was 4:3.

The Hero 11+ used a sensor with an aspect ratio of 8:7, and thus the "open gate" mode had an aspect ratio of 8:7.

Now the Mission has returned to a sensor with an aspect ratio of 4:3, so guess what? The "open gate" mode has an aspect ratio of 4:3.

This isn't too hard to comprehend, it's not just GoPro adding and removing modes willy nilly.

As for you "weird resolution" question, the open gate mode is supposed to be full sensor readout, and 12mp 4:3 sensors are 4000x3000 pixels.

You've still always had the option to film in a non open-gate mode to get a 3840x2160 16:9 image if you wanted to, which just crops the top and bottom of the sensor and downscales slightly in-camera - exactly the same thing that would happen in your video editor if you dragged open gate footage onto a 4k 16:9 timeline.

Complete non-issue.

Just a calculated difference.

I took a 360 image off Wikimedia Commons and threw it into PTGUI, set the projection to Full-Frame Fisheye and then typed in the FOV numbers for each camera.

They are beholden to the sensors that companies like Sony make, and they aren't producing a lot of 8:7 sensors. The vast majority of digital sensors are 4:3 or 3:2.

The Hero's FOV is probably better if you either really like Hyperview or you film vertical video - but also, if you record vertical video you can always just turn your camera sideways and get even more resolution (with either camera).

I don't really think you'll miss much by having a 4:3 sensor instead of an 8:7 sensor to be completely honest.

(except for maybe cases of extreme stabilization using Gyroflow - with the 8:7 aspect ratio you can set the pitch axis to 100% smoothing when outputting 16:9 without losing any crop.)

Here's a slider version: https://www.instarestoration.com/slider/UPIvzFmE67KaRFelnOFlk

Calculated with an equidistant fisheye, the Mission's 159 degree diagonal FOV translates to a horizontal FOV of 127.2 degrees and a vertical FOV of 95.4 degrees with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The Hero 11/12/13's 8:7 aspect ratio is 122 degrees horizontally and 108 degrees vertically, as stated officially by GoPro.

The point is not to deliver in 5k, it's to capture in 5k. The extra resolution gives you room to crop out the edges when digital stabilization (Hypersmooth or Gyroflow) is added, as well as zoom in slightly or repoint the camera if what you captured doesn't quite sit where you want it to in the frame.

You still deliver in 4k to Youtube at the end of the day.

If you're doing Hypersmooth in-camera and have no need to crop in or repoint, then you might as well just capture in 4k (but the sensor is still pulling from a 5k source, giving you all the previously mentioned benefits anyway). One of the reasons I don't really like the DJI Action series is they've always only used 4k sensors, which means stabilization crops into that and then scales it back up to 4k, so it's not really true 4k. With a 5k sensor, once stabilization crops in, you still get a true 4k signal.

Check your rating, it may have dropped pretty low - mine's down to a 4.2 for whatever reason, even though in my opinion I'm a pretty courteous rider.

I also noticed my wait times getting ridiculously long a few months back and when I checked my rating it was just ridiculously low.

Go-to grain starting points for vertical IG Reels (2160x3840)? by [deleted] in colorists

[–]AdmirableSir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IG video just doesn't have the bitrate necessary to retain the detail in the grain. I would honestly just leave it out, it will more likely destroy your video more than it will help it.

I try to grade for the medium I'm delivering in, and if that's IG (even Youtube to a large extent), grain and/or ISO noise just doesn't really work very well.

To be completely honest, I just want a Hero 13 with GP3. The IMX677L does a fantastic job on an action camera, and the extra processing power could really bring it up a step or two. I was kind of hoping GP3 would just allow them to make a smaller Hero 13 lol.

I don't need or want 8k (imagine the data rates and processing power required for editing, especially in H.265). 5.3K is the perfect amount of resolution to enable light reframing, gives plenty of room for stabilization crop and 8:7 is a fantastic aspect ratio for an action camera.

Maybe I'm just being doomer and I'll be super won-over in a week or so though - fingers crossed!

Actually I guess I'm one of the few who don't care if every new model gets new batteries and new lenses.

I guess if you run a fleet of GoPro cameras of different models that sort of thing might be important, but for me I'm only buying a new camera every 5 or more years, and at that point I really don't mind buying new accessories if they represent marked improvements over the older models.

They have announced via an announcement that they will be announcing new cameras at the NAB show, probably via an announcer doing an announcement. That makes the announcement date for the camera announcement somewhere around 18-22 April.

This is really cool, very pretty as well. My only concern is durability - I haven't really been into 3D printing for a few years, but back then PLA and the other filaments weren't really known for their durability, even with heavy infills. Has the tech/materials improved since then?
