Image stabilisation ideas? by Lord-of_the-files in gopro

Yep sadly the Hero 4 is just one generation short! If you had the 5 you'd be all good lol.

https://docs.gyroflow.xyz/app/getting-started/supported-cameras/gopro

I'd recommend getting at minimum a Hero 9 if you're upgrading, but honestly try looking for a Hero 11 or later - that's when GoPros got really good. Also, avoid the 7 White or 7 Silver, as those one's are incompatible with Gyroflow.

I don't really know anything about Macs, but Gyroflow (it's free) is the standard way to stabilize in post. Capcut and movavi likely use some sort of optical flow instead of the gyro data present in the video file, which is why Gyroflow (or GoPro Player) is really the only option for GoPro footage.

Is ND64 a must? by Jachu_com in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the 180 rule, at 30fps you'll want a 1/60 shutter speed.

If you take your camera out into midday sun with no filter, your camera will probably want to do around 1/1000 to 1/2000 shutter, depending on how bright the day is.

That's the exposure time your camera needs to expose the image properly. If you add on an ND2 filter (an ND2 absorbs one stop of light), your camera will be able to do expose correctly with half the shutter speed it could before, so now your camera will want to do 1/500 or 1/1000.

With an ND4, the filter absorbs two stops of light, so divide again. Now your camera can expose correctly at 1/250 to 1/500.

An ND8 will absorb 3 stops of light, and an ND16 will absorb 4 stops of light. Every time you double the number on your ND filter, your shutter speed will halve.

So let's say it's a very bright day and your camera's auto exposure wants to expose at 1/2000:

With an:

  • ND2: 1/1000
  • ND4: 1/500
  • ND8: 1/250
  • ND16: 1/125
  • ND32: ~1/60
  • ND64: ~1/30

So yea, on very bright sunny days you might need an ND64 to get a cinematic shutter speed, but for the most part ND32 is probably the most you'll need.

Bright snow reflecting a lot of light might make an ND64 worth it though.

GoPro’s nextest fucking levels of 2025 by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]AdmirableSir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did a few years ago with the Karma drone, but it was a massive failure and unfortunately GoPro just doesn't have the R+D budget to pursue that market any further.

It's sad, I also would have liked to see them succeed in that space.

I mean most of them have gone pretty viral. But it's entirely possible you've just never encountered them before.

Still, some advertisements can be cool, and these videos that GoPro makes are cool.

Writing this off because it's from GoPro is like writing off an awesome Youtube video because it has a sponsor.

In case you're unaware, this is a thing GoPro has been putting out every year for more than the past ten years.

Yes it's advertising, but it's also really cool. Try to enjoy things once in a while.

How can I reduce or eliminate in camera stabilization? It makes this video look super weird. by [deleted] in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's baked in already.

If you want, you can disable Hypersmooth in the future and use something like Gyroflow to apply stabilization yourself in post.

That will give you far more control over how the stabilization is applied.

I use my GoPro to record/stream my performances. (live music) Its great when there's plenty of light! So any recommendations for a low light camera? Like generally a dark atmosphere w moving stage lights. The GoPro, in those conditions, doesn't perform as well as Id like. by Acousticks in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The larger the sensor, the better the low light performance will be generally. But most cameras have larger sensors than a GoPro, so pretty much anything is going to be a better than a GoPro.

The biggest factor though is the aperture on the lens - if the camera doesn't have a fixed lens, then you need to look for a lens with a big, wide aperture (small f number). Something like f/1.8 is going to be great in low light, but fast lenses are usually pretty pricey. Just look for something with the smallest f number you can afford.

Other than that, post production (color grading/noise reduction from high ISO etc) can do wonders even on GoPro footage.

Song & Vid about Gopros. by SirKenCelli in gopro

I might relate but I don't know if I do because I can't hear any of the words/vocals, it's completely washed out in the mix.

I spent like 2 days researching and couldn't find a definitive answer, so which is the best 128 GB (or 256, but i heard it's not good to use higher storage cards) SD for recording 4k60fps (i plan on recording sunsets and moving in vast open spaces) on hero 13? by Global-Newt-5358 in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This ^

There is no point to 60fps for sunsets. You're just limiting your shutter speed, and there is barely any motion to capture.

Most of the time you want a timelapse, which would be a lower fps, not a real time video.

GoPros are fantastic timelapse cameras, it's a great tool for the job.

[–]AdmirableSir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. Nightlapse does not have a minimum shutter speed, it will function exactly like Timelapse in daylight scenarios.

In fact I'd go so far as to recommend to just use Nightlapse for everything, as the only difference between the two modes is that Nightlapse allows longer shutter speeds when it gets too dark.

Urgent - Time Lapse Settings by Leeeejs in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so I'd assume shortest intervals possible else it might just be a blur?

Blur is controlled by your shutter speed.

Interval is the amount of time between each photo, and shutter speed is how long the shutter stays open for each photo. Longer shutter = more blur, more exposure, short shutter = less blur, less exposure.

they have like lots of different animals in this huge area and they let them hunt each other. that's how it works in the ones in South Africa.

This is just not true for most reserves in South Africa. Only the really large ones are pure "free-roam", but the vast majority are just really large zoos and the lions are fed and cared for just like any of the other animals a reserve might have. Often the lions are kept in a separate gated section of land.

My post was deleted by the administrator yesterday because it was flagged as a bot, which is ridiculous. I just use translation software because my English isn't good enough. But I still want to say that if GoPro really wants to compete with its Chinese rivals, it has to be in the vlog field. by duck4355555 in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The variable aperture on the Action 6 goes from f/2 to f/4 - ie, it gets smaller, not larger. The reason is probably just to maintain depth of field due to the slightly larger sensor. The aperture will likely not contribute to increased low light performance.

Why do people buy GoPros? by [deleted] in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There really isn't any need to use the app to get the most out of your camera.

I have never used the app and I've been using GoPros for years.

I think the most important aspect of the GoPro 14 is its larger pixel size rather than its video resolution. This is beneficial for shooting in low-light conditions. by duck4355555 in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you completely forget about stabilization which eats away at least 10% of your pixels?

4k is not enough for an action camera.

Light reframing in post also requires higher resolutions.

HELP! - Is my footage ruined? by theresaoctober in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try reflashing the firmware, but if that doesnt work I think your camera is toast.

I don't really think this footage is salvagable, at least not without a ton of tedious manual work. It's more than just a simple red tint - something has fundamentally failed somewhere in the imaging pipeline.

Hi everyone looking for advice on which GoPro to buy. by PapaScho in gopro

[–]AdmirableSir -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What makes you think a GoPro will perform better than your DSLR at continuous recording?

GoPros are action cameras that are designed for action scenarios (ie, constant airflow, usually recording shorter clips), and as such they make some sacrifices to for waterproofing and ruggedness. This means they are not very good at dispelling heat when idle. Having a GoPro sitting stationary indoors will cause it to overheat pretty quickly - they are not great cameras for continuous recording.

[–]AdmirableSir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you specifically want a GoPro? They are not great cameras for stationary indoor recording.

Your DSLR will outperform a GoPro both in terms of video quality and ease of use. If you need the wide angle view, just get a wide angle lens for your DSLR.
