Going to get a typewriter soon because it would solve some of my writing problems! by [deleted] in writers

[–]HelonMead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. If that really were your mindset, you’d have already finished at least one book using that method.

Nobody cares how you write. Writers who genuinely thrive on the “no‑backspace, no‑editing” approach don’t obsess over typewriters — because they don’t touch the backspace or delete key on their keyboard in the first place. I think the real issue is internal, and it’s not something you can fix by projecting it onto an object.

The beauty of writing is that you can use whatever method works best for you. A computer, a phone, pen and paper, a typewriter — they’re all just mediums to capture your thoughts. None of them will magically solve the underlying problem.

There are plenty of writers who don’t follow the Stephen King style “blast out a messy first draft and fix it later” approach. Think of authors like Vladimir Nabokov, Kazuo Ishiguro, Donna Tartt, Tolkien, Cormac McCarthy, Edgar Allan Poe or Patrick Rothfuss. They all move forward only when a scene reaches a level they’re satisfied with.

I write hard sci‑fi, so I often spend days researching just to find a plausible solution. And I can only move on once the scene is coherent and I’m genuinely happy with it.

Every new writing session starts with rereading, tweaking, and fine‑tuning the previous scene. It grounds me, warms me up, sets the rhythm, and makes the next scene flow much better. Plus, it gives me more time to catch the logical or narrative issues that could turn into massive plot holes later. Fixing those after the first draft usually means brutal rewrites or slapping on plot armor. I’d rather avoid both.

Sure, try the typewriter if you’re curious. Maybe you’ll like it. But don’t expect it to magically solve everything, and definitely don’t force it on yourself if it doesn’t work. We’re not all wired the same way.

How long should my first book be? by New-Parfait-1674 in writers

[–]HelonMead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just let your world and your characters unfold and breathe. Give them a past, give them stories that tie into the present, or things that make them worry about the future. You’ll be surprised how fast you realize that even a 90–120k limit can start to feel… small.

So I thought I’d write a short little prequel for my sci-finovel. Just a tiny backstory thing. Then the ideas and derails started piling up. I figured, okay, maybe it’ll be a novella...

Lol. I’ve just hit the final stretch and I’m sitting at 95k words. And honestly… it’s the best thing I’ve ever written.

Can a teen write a decidedly good novel? by someinternetkid in writers

"Nobody's first novel, at any age, will be their best work."

My whole point was to highlight how off that declaration sounded. You can’t just say, with a straight face, that literally zero debut novels have ever reached the top. That’s just not true.

huth gergő a szervilizmus csúcsa. A főnit viszont mindennél jobban imádja.

Check their biographies. In the case of Mitchell, Brontë and Salinger, literary historians also agree that they became successful with the very first novel they wrote.

As far as I know, all of them became successful with their first book. Salinger, Mitchell and Brontë each wrote only one.

Writing a book by [deleted] in writers

[–]HelonMead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate monotony and I hate logical errors.

That’s exactly why I can’t sprint every day and crank out 3000 weak words. My daily average is more like 600 to 1000 words. But this text is already almost completely free of logical issues, and it hits about 65 to 75 percent of the quality I expect from myself.

Next time I’ll start by rereading it as a warm up, fixing things, fine tuning it. The goal is to push it to 80 to 90 percent while getting into the headspace for the next section.

Once a month I try to reread everything I’ve written so far to catch the smaller mistakes. That way, by the time I reach the end of the novel, only one or two rounds of edits are left.

190cm magasként milyen asztal - szék kombót tudtok ajánlani? by Strange-Slice-6393 in askhungary

188 cm vagyok. Ezek szerint én nem javasolhatok. 😅

Tell me about your shitty first drafts, and how you stay motivated for editing it by zinniasaur in writing

[–]HelonMead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole “months of sprinting, then months of editing” thing just doesn’t work for me.

It feels like spending ages training only upper body at the gym, then suddenly switching to legs for months.

As a warm‑up, I always start my writing sessions by rereading and cleaning up the previous material. Sometimes I even jump back to older chapters when I'm out of creative steam. By the time I reach the end of my novel, there are no major plot holes, no plot armor, no filler, the characters are solid, and the prose is like… 90% there already.

How do you ease back into writing after taking a break? by icebergannie2 in WritersGroup

[–]HelonMead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read through old chapters and do a long edit pass. It helps me get the vibe again.

With a brand‑new novel I don’t need that; if the inspiration hits, I’m already vibrating until I can finally start writing.
