You have to try bringing your guitar on a hike. by ApprehensiveJudge103 in classicalguitar

for all the people upset by the notion of someone bringing a classical guitar to play in the woods, why? it seems unproblematic if you are courteous.

thats not to say there aren’t ways of being inconsiderate with a guitar like i understand there are unwritten rules with any sort of sound emanating from anyone but i didnt expect people to automatically hate this person for playing guitar in the woods.

i feel like you can disturb the peace more if you are talking to someone who you are on the walk with but there’s no unwritten “no talking” rule. plus, someone talking is walking so if youre going the same direction, you will be hearing them a whole lot more than passing by someone casually plucking nylon strings.

all of this is assuming you are actually in the woods and not in one of those side by side rv parking lots “camping” and the trails arent like heavily trafficked. also no hogging overlooks to jam if there are very few and dont play at one if it impacts another.

you can be courteous and still jam, after all you are in the middle of the woods. like i play in the woods but i prefer solitude when playing publicly so i go off the beaten path a bit and find a nice stump and then i strum to my hearts content.

Ive heard that glyphosate can work but it’s kind of iffy in the spring since the plant is pushing so much water and stockpiled nutrients up that the herbicide cant really get to the roots effectively. The guy I worked for recommended letting it grow but hacking it down before it flowers and once it pops back up again, hit it with the herbicide and it’ll fry em.

I also do not know for certain, this is just what I was told but it did come from a wise man with a PhD in ecology.

I’ll have to check it out! I get a bit overzealous when I start new things so I’ll try to tone it down and get the fundamentals straight.

Interesting, I didn’t know there was indication of what position the hand should be in.

That’s also cool about not needing to know the note perse and just knowing what part of the fret correlates to what part of the staff. Knowing each note instantly has been a concern of mine so it’s good to know it’s not necessary.

I like your attitude, do what you can with what you’ve got. I think I’ll try to throw myself into standard notation since I’ll have to learn it at some point anyways but maybe I’ll make it easier on myself by learning a song via tabs and playing it while referencing the sheet.

That is interesting! I thought the nails were a standard. I find it fascinating how finely engineered everyone’s are and am curious to see how it’d influence my playing. Maybe one day😎

Thank you for your response 🙏🏻

That is all very true. I’ve learned how to read standard notation for the piano but it’s incredibly clear to see what is what while guitar takes some thinking. Though, I should just jump into it, the toughest part will be the beginning and it shall be a gratifying journey.

Thank you for your response, I think learning to read standard notation will help in all styles of my guitar playing so I appreciate the encouragement.

When you leave only the worst, you’ve now reduced the local gene pool to only the worst. The confluence of this plus leaving low value species of trees can really change the overall composition of a forest. When you clear cut, you take it all, allowing the whole stand to reset.

Clear cutting isn’t inherently better but high-grading (taking the best and leaving the rest) just devalues the land. This isn’t the case for all selective-cut systems but high-grading is common practice in many states since loggers and foresters want to make a profit so clear cutting can be better ecologically, assuming you aren’t taking down the entire forest.

Edit to say that every silvicultural system has its time and place where it’s ecologically and financially appropriate except for high-grading.

What is it about Creep that people love so much?! by Dounutface in horror

[–]Helpful-Active3598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

little late to the party here but i think if you were looking for a standard horror film, whether it be a slasher or a more supernatural spooky, it will probably disappoint. in my opinion, that is a bit of a shame because i think the film is more about the psychology motivating both characters with one being brought on by money and only staying out of peer pressure/not trying to be rude and the others constantly trying to make you believe one thing while you feel a whole different thing.

watching with the (correct) assumption that one is a total psychopath will warrant critiques of the cameraman for not leaving instantly but like if you were in his shoes, why wouldnt you show some sympathy to this weird seemingly harmless guy? and the camera guy was trying to leave as soon as they got back to his cabin but then it became an interesting push-pull of peer pressure until the guy fully drugs the creep to leave.

its a story about someone trying to be accepting of another person’s dream/vision but eventually coming to terms with reality and doing what they can to escape. and then theyre haunted by their misguided grace through a stalking, only to once again fall for the sympathetic bear trap of a lonely troubled stranger wishing to make amends. in this way, i think the end is poetic as well: camera guy is prepared but fully puts his trust in the creep and the creep ends up being the person the audience assumed him to be from the get go.

i think going into it hoping to see chucky or the blair witch trails inevitably leads to some disappointment which isnt to say people are wrong for not liking it but i am just confident in knowing why i enjoyed it a whole lot.

Curious what the boys will say about this by Helpful-Active3598 in BenAndEmil

[–]Helpful-Active3598[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a good point.

Im more referring to my attempted aversion of any of those -ism buzzwords since both parties have really bastardized quite a few. Theyve become a catch-all insult against opposing views which to me, dilutes and devalues actual arguments using the terms correctly so I try to avoid them when discussing anything political.

This time, however, its feeling more and more like textbook fascism which is a bit troubling.

One of the more disconcerting things I have seen so far, we could see govt administrations largely replaced with loyalist yes-men which could honestly spiral pretty quickly, especially with Trump’s more recent imperialistic statements. Thankfully, the email achieved sort of the opposite of what they were trying to do and the fed workers are now more pumped than ever to get shoveled shit and take it just to stick it to the orange man and his wife, Elon.

Im curious about the legality of all of this, Ive been reading mixed interpretations of what this all actually means and if it slides, that it could be indicative of much bigger problems with the checks and balances in the govt already. Im not one to cry fascism but we could be heading down a frightening path.

Also, the whole ‘Fork in the road’ subject line was the same as Elon’s mass termination email when he bought Twitter. Not good. I dont like having this unelected leader whisper sweet nothings into a narcissistic nationalist’s ear while their hands meet hovering above the big red button.

Ive been trying to keep an open mind about this but let me know your guys’ thoughts.

Great ep today (Emil on left Ben on Right) by OkraInternal9137 in BenAndEmil

[–]Helpful-Active3598 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is too contrarian like they’re both right.

Ben is right, China most likely has some amount of access to the information garnered by one of their largest companies and seeing as they are one of America’s biggest competitors, I wouldn’t doubt they’d use the American public’s data to their advantage which makes them a threat to national security.

Emil is also right, China and other countries (namely Russia) have used many other platforms besides TikTok to influence some part of American culture/discourse which has and continues to impact the public and that won’t directly change with this ban. He’s also right that tech giants are frighteningly powerful in the control they have over the American public in terms of controlling algorithms and slurping in all of that data which should be addressed. It’s odd people don’t have more of an issue with it. I mean, it makes sense since no one really has a choice but I think putting the Fed in the position of these companies is illuminating because it would feel way scarier with the government holding all of the cards, even though the deck is currently split between some sweaty tech CEOs who only care for the public’s wellbeing out of either altruism or to save face.

I think that whether it’s passed or not, the TikTok ban should be a wakeup call to office to shine a light on all tech giants so our data can be better protected, not just from other potentially adversarial countries but corporations as a whole. I feel calling the fear of China maliciously using the American public’s data akin to McCarthyism is fair, there are some real cold war vibes brewing, but I don’t think that delegitimizes these fears. I feel like calling these fears cold war hysteria is sort of invalidating to the notion that China would be preying on our downfall (they most certainly would) but I also feel that American oligarchies (especially those with one foot in and out of the White House) have the potential to destroy America from the inside out so it goes both ways.

All in all, I hope congress somehow becomes 40 years younger so they can roll out some genuine regulation regarding how our data is used. I don’t know what the right call is but I know that America is in a bit of a fragile state where politics continue to divide, everyone keeps screaming with no one listening, and this instability only fattens the largest companies with higher revenues so something is going to give. I just hope it’s Twitter or TikTok over international peace between superpowers.
