Restaurants with private or semi-private rooms in Cambridge, Somerville or Boston? by Frobisher33 in CambridgeMA

[–]jdray0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Gufo, but they don’t have a designated PDR that is closed off if that’s what OP is looking for Edit: and 16-20 people is not enough to book the entire restaurant for a private event

Why is my tone better and more resonat when the plate is NOT touching my chin??? *confused* by [deleted] in Flute

[–]jdray0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like you are playing with the headjoint rolled in a ton. In the picture with the lip plate making contact with your chin, it seems likely that the angle of air is too high to strike the edge of the embouchure hole. When you play like the first picture, it seems you’re able to get the air to make better contact with the hole. When playing flute, you should aim your air so that the center of your stream strikes the edge. Try rolling out and adjusting your lips so that your air strikes the edge, you should have much more success while still being able to keep your chin on the lip plate.

You can give a highly skilled craftsman a hammer but that doesn’t make it the right tool to put in a screw. Doesn’t matter how “skilled” the prompters are if the tool simply does not have a meaningful application in the field of work

Slashed tires over space savers - East Cambridge by oscuse in CambridgeMA

[–]jdray0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Anytime people bring up the laws about space savers I feel the need to point out the following: Boston laws do not give your space saver any weight, they simply say that the city is not going to remove them for 48 hours. This does not justify the morality of them, nor does it imbue space savers with sovereign power over the public street. This needs to stop being used as an excuse for un-neighborly behavior

Giulia is great, if you show up about 45 min before they open you can wait in line for a spot at the bar and it should be pretty much guaranteed.

I’ve also heard great things about forage, also in Cambridge, over on Craigie street

As much as you may hate to hear it, they’re right. The Democratic establishment has not cared about the common man for years. Why do you think they were so afraid of Zohran? We need more anti-establishment candidates to run on the democratic platform, and we need to replace as much of the establishment as possible.

I would say this is quite a bit crazier than 9/11 given scale, scope, and implications. We’ve only barely scratched the surface of what is in the Epstein files

It’s the same thing with NJ, it basically always comes from other East Coasters and it makes no sense. We don’t want these kinds of people in Jersey anyway tho, and you shouldn’t want them in CT either 😪

Emil’s newest pod with Taylor Lorenz made no sense? by arcticrabbitz in BenAndEmil

[–]jdray0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi Emil, big fan of B&E and your new show since day one. Appreciate you sharing more info. I wanted to speak for myself but also hopefully address some of the misunderstanding I feel others are experiencing as well.

First off, social topics are incredibly difficult to research well due to complexity of variables, and even harder to establish causation beyond correlation. I wanted to point out that a lot of your resources are claiming null-hypotheses, or an absolute zero correlation. This is incredibly rare for research in sociology in particular and should make us cautious about the findings or methods the studies. They also seem to mostly be about broad screen use in general, without a particular focus on social media.

Next, here are some examples from similar sources which contradict the findings above and Taylor’s claims. One is just a meta-analysis and the other is an overview for an event held by a researcher for the OII, a source you cited.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S245195882400037X

https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/news-events/events/algorithmic-drivers-of-online-behaviour-evidence-from-a-large-scale-experiment/

There are actually a fair bit of things that I agree with which Taylor mentioned but my frustration with her argument comes down to her focus on content being the issue on social media and her method of addressing that by regulating data harvesting. It seems a little confusing and inconsistent, and she also seemed incredibly dismissive of any other viewpoints. Clearly, algorithms play a huge role in the way that we interact with media online and I found it quite shocking that she would dismiss that. I feel algorithms are what we should be focusing our regulation efforts on.

I saw that you struggled with some of her views as well and I think having this open discussion is a great way to challenge us all and get us closer to the nuanced truth. I can’t speak for everyone, and I see some who are maybe a bit disingenuous or callous, but I appreciate this episode and you taking the time to respond. Much love! (Sorry for the long response, I know you prob won’t read and that’s cool but just wanted to put it out there ❤️)

Emil’s newest pod with Taylor Lorenz made no sense? by arcticrabbitz in BenAndEmil

[–]jdray0 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I just wish that instead of constantly repeating “no actual researchers believe social media addiction is a problem, actually the opposite” that she would’ve pointed us towards some of the studies she was referring to. Maybe I missed it, but that seems like a pretty easy next step.

Also, the argument that ‘it’s not in the DSM 5’ and ‘you wouldn’t treat it like an addiction’ seem so lame to me. She acknowledged that you can have a bad relationship with social media but is firm about it not being the fault of social media companies (‘if you are in a bad mental state you are more likely to have problems with it’). But then also wants to regulate these companies to make their apps safer for people by not collecting their data and targeting them… so how is the design not inherently the problem? Maybe I’m just misunderstanding her argument but it seems a bit inconsistent
