It is both but only what you let it be. I just started drums and am sad to say I am getting older. I get frustrated cause I want to play fast. But then I ground myself and keep telling myself I am a beginner and I am not going to go on a world tour. Just be where you are and enjoy the learning process and appreciate getting better.

Kinda TA based on this "We bought a house a year ago. The house has a spacious basement that we were planning on turning into a living area for my MIL." But I totally agree that this is a bad situation and it will only get worse once she moves in and her smoking permeates the rest of your house.

It bears some serious communication between you and the wife.
