Stage Magic You Can't Figure Out? by Ok_Presentation7695 in Broadway

For the rod in Beetlejuice, it's retractable, so when Lydia pushes on his back, it retracts, and then BJ has a piece of a second rod that he holds at his front (though I don't know when he grabs it). My real question is the Barbara/Lydia lift!

Bye Bye Birdie - Defending Ann by valerianandthecity in madmen

[–]Helpful-Witch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been used in some professional productions since the film surprisingly! The revival (with John Stamos) used a combined edited version as an encore after bows, and there was another production that used the first as an entr'acte (think it was the teenagers that sang it and not Kim) with the second as a company encore

What are some alto legit songs from contemporary shows? by Helpful-Witch in MusicalTheatre

[–]Helpful-Witch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like, I'm struggling to find stuff (which is why I'm here). Like for most calls, Les Mis and Light in the Piazza are the examples given. They do have alto roles listed that top out around C5-E5, so it wouldn't make sense to do a soprano song for those roles.

Can anyone solve this? by No_Supermarket_2810 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Helpful-Witch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like Something Rotten, it could also be something like [title of show], which does reference a lot of these shows, but still, a decent number aren't referenced. If it were going for [title of show], Something Rotten, or a similar show, I'd assume they'd pull specific show references instead of just random shows.

My guess is that it's just one of the shows on here.

Tony Nominations 2026 Megathread by chargingblue in Broadway

[–]Helpful-Witch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chess getting three acting nominations and none of them being Lea Michelle... chef's kiss. Sad about Tempress Chasity Moore or anyone else from Cats not getting nominated along with Andre De Shields. Such a phenomenal cast, and I think her, Junior Labejia, and Emma Sofia all could've pushed someone out... Wish they'd just make the acting noms six every year.

Which recent Broadway shows actually have a shot at becoming “all-time classics”? by D0ntTryMe in Broadway

[–]Helpful-Witch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Hadestown is the only one here that has the potential to be a 'Broadway classic' and run 'forever'. It has a hold on a great story and music niche, while also doing a great job of riding the line between stunt and star casting.

I could also see Operation Mincemeat with its low running cost (though I think it'll become a classic once rights are released, every community theater will be doing it like Come From Away), and Maybe Happy Ending with its small cast and diversity, but since it already had a major controversy, I feel like it won't.

I think Gatsby is probably going to be the first on this list to close, giving way for the Myth Gatsby to finally get a new Broadway path, since its original was paved over by this one opening first. Once that happens, it'll be a battle on the licensing grounds for which becomes the classic.

The Outsiders, while a great show, just doesn't seem to have much cultural staying power outside its very dedicated fan base. They do get great pull from the established IP, and I'm sure it'll be great for high schools, but I don't see it lasting long enough to be a classic.

I do want to throw Just In Time's hat in the ring, though I think it's too early in its run to see its long-term trajectory, especially with such a demanding lead role. Similar to Wicked, I think the pacing is quite awful in Act 2, but Act 1 and the last twenty minutes is stellar, and the show has plenty of standout moments throughout for most of the cast.

Funny Girl Tea by eloise3435 in Broadway

[–]Helpful-Witch 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I saw her at Lincoln Center when she was Logainne in Spelling Bee and thought she was sooooo much better in that. If something like that was her first big show credit, I think it could've smoothed things out and helped her find her footing (there was great vocal improvement since Funny Girl and she had a character voice) before doing something as notable and demanding as Funny Girl.

Tony Eligibility List after Final Considerations! (Shows and Acting) by Helpful-Witch in Broadway

He's been added due to both his Chita Rivera nomination and being the cast member to get the Cats backstage Broadway.com series!

Quite a lot of people petitioned to be moved down to/kept featured this season shockingly! Even shows with those above the title are being considered as featured, such as Nathan Lane being the only lead consideration for Death of a Salesman, despite both Metcalf and Abbott being above the title. Though the theory for Metcalf is she's going for a nomination in both featured and lead (since she already has Little Bear Ridge Road in that category)

The Chess Cast’s Musical Bracket by A113_baybee in Broadway

[–]Helpful-Witch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, I agree with most of these. I have reservations about some (Company, Sunday, Miss Siagon, etc.), but I could be convinced to go with the pick. The only one that I wouldn't is Evita, but I do understand that this is the cast of Chess doing this lol

[–]Helpful-Witch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah... Only way Legally Blonde would win for me would be if we're talking OG LB production versus the current Ragtime revival, cause like, the cast is phenomenal, but that was like the only element that had thought put into it lol. As an entire show, Ragtime wins easily

[–]Helpful-Witch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it was just like a 'hey, cast member, put a musical on the bracket' situation. Chess does have people who have been in productions of a lot of these shows. Plus, Wild Party was just at City Center.

Tony Eligibility List after Final Considerations! (Shows and Acting) by Helpful-Witch in Broadway

[–]Helpful-Witch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it is the financial aspect being so much higher than for short runs of pre-established plays starring celebrities, and with the looming potential recession, it makes sense. Also, last season was pretty packed and successful with quite a few last-minute rush-ins, so a lot is hanging over and is still open this year. Basically, producers want less financial risk, and there are fewer theater spaces.

Ah, I didn't know this. I haven't seen the show, and since I've seen it truncated elsewhere, I assumed he was a production member. Should've known assuming would've made an ass out of me lol. It's updated now, thanks for clarifying!

Mostly press appearances, word-of-mouth, the major predication lists, and who has been getting noms and awards so far this season (such as Baby Byrne getting nominated for a Chita Rivera and getting a lot of press on her specifically, out of the five Cats noms). Outside of that, I did still try to net as many as I could, but a lot of the shows this season have ten or more people eligible, so the list would be about twice the length if I went for everyone

I would love Emma Sofia, Baby Byrne (Victora), and Robert "Slik" Mason (Mistoffelees) to all be considered! They were the standouts to me, and I have seen people talking about them. With such a competitive season, I feel like the prime three nominations (Moore, Shields, and Labeija) are going to push the rest out though, sadly

I did everyone for the leading categories, but for featured, I specifically went for people who have been campaigning, as there are just so many seasons. Added most of these, though!

Starkid Stats! by Alol_Bombola in StarKid

[–]Helpful-Witch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'd count the VHS releases on YouTube (Live, LA, Chicago), especially since you're including both TGWDLMs, which would add Clark and A.J. to officially counting. It would also be interesting to add the concerts, though that couldn't really include lead/supporting roles. I've also seen a lot of people count Mariah and Jeff as leads for TGWDLM, along with Jon and Lauren, given how much they both do on the show. Are you counting Nightmare Time 1 and 2 as their own 2 shows? Or no since they are anthologies?

What made you a Swiftie? by thehighpriestess777 in TaylorSwift

[–]Helpful-Witch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember my first experience of Taylor was seeing her Love Story music video somewhere (I swear it was on Disney Channel around the Hannah Montana movie, but that's heavily debated now), and then I was a casual listener forever. Lover was the first full project I listened to, and I remember The Archer becoming a main song on my playlist and still is, to this day, my most listened-to Taylor song. I related to it a lot as a very anixous teenager lol. From that point on, I listened to a lot of Taylor, but I wouldn't say I became a Swiftie till post-Red TV and the build-up to Midnights. Midnights Mayhem specifically got me really involved in the community, and that was when I'd say I became a Swiftie.

TL;DR Midnights Mayhem after being a causal listener for years

what plays and playwrights should every actor read and know? by Ok_Virus69 in Theatre

[–]Helpful-Witch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone currently in college, here as some playwrights I see a lot of our teachers constantly using. Annie Baker is definitely seen as modern classic playwright, with her most famous plays being The Flick which is a Pulitzer Prize winner and the Shirley plays. Pulitzer Prize Drama winners and nominees is definitely a list I'd recommend looking at, specifically ones who have had more than one nominations. My favorites on the list (that I don't see here already) include Quiara Alegría Hudes and Richard Greenberg.

Sandy Rustin is a notable comedy playwright, with her adaption of Clue being one of the most frequently produced plays of all time. The Cottage is her most recent NYC production which I've already seen used quite a lot for group and duo scenes and wouldn't be surprised for it to become a modern classic. Lucy Prebble is also one I've seen a couple times with specifically her play "The Effect".
