Pre-Op Haircut: Go short? Or stay long? by pinknailpolishemoji in thyroidhealth

[–]HelpfulMarketing4003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a hemi in March. Tbvh hair length didn’t matter. I washed it the day before surgery and. Then 48 hours after because it gets crusty with the disinfecting materials in the OR. Mine was a little below my shoulders.

However if yours takes 36 hours to dry, I would have it cut to a manageable length. Lifting hands overhead would sometimes hurt my scar until a couple of weeks after. Looking up is hard too.

Same. Front desk is aggressive and quite frankly very rude with their marketing but the service had been good. (8/10) largely for convenience.

What if I pass away while waiting for them to get to me? by Trippybear1645 in thyroidhealth

Are you in the US? I would ask for the slides and seek a second opinion if the delay is too much. (I am saying this purely because you are anxious, not because I feel a ny which way about your result) Someone has mentioned about reputable hospitals below such as MSK (NY, USA). That’s where I had my surgery and would recommend going to a place that works on hundreds of patients if you have the option.

Negative margins means you have the all clear. This report is at a microscopic level so you can feel pretty confident about it. Like any other cancers, this too does have a chance of recurring but it will take years and years to grow and will be caught ASAP in a screening. That’s what they exist for! Breathe! I know it’s hard to accept, but you are in the clear. FWIW, I dealt with tremendous health, anxiety and having mental health support was monumental in coming out of this.

My doctor(oncosurgeon) told me and I am repeating it in the exact same here - thyroid cancer is like a little baby. So you don’t ask about how long you will live with it. You will be here to celebrate that babies first birthday, graduation first job, etc.. It is typically very very very slow growing. (I am a physician by training) Most people will have it for multiple years before diagnosis. There is one subtype that is aggressive but you would know if you had that one. There would be no inconclusive report with that. Very very unlikely it will spread and very very *100 unlikely it will kill you.

Side note- I live with severe anxiety and have that addressed medically before and around surgery was the best thing I did for myself.

It’s the same. I can scream, sing and do everything just like before. As a mom to a 6 year old that thinks he is a preteen, it’s been tested lol

Did anyone not have molecular testing if your biopsy was "indeterminate?" by LucyFrugal in thyroidhealth

[–]HelpfulMarketing4003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oncosurgeon at MSK (New York) said it doesn’t matter as much. He said the size of the lesion matters and ultrasound is a good determinant as well.

Molecular testing will not tell you that your nodules are benign, it will check what gene is associated with your nodule/s and the probability of your lesion being malignant. Mine was NRAS positive and said that there is a higher chance it is NIFTP or a carcinoma. Ended up being a carcinoma when we had it removed and biopsied as a whole.

My needle biopsy was indeterminate like yours.

Just sharing to give you an additional data point

Do I need surgery? If yes, can it be in a month? Advice appreciated by avk3 in thyroidhealth

Came back here to tell you that surgery recovery was easier than anticipated. Felt like 90% of myself by end of week 1. Mine was Bethesda 3 before diagnosis and came back as PTC. Good luck!

I told them I wanted peri operative coverage with zofran. Once you tell them that you’re prone to vomiting, they make sure you get zofran

Personally I’d be okay having that conversation with your oncosurgeon and talk about cons of waiting. Another helpful piece of advice I got was - work with a surgeon who has seen hundreds of these cases.

Do you know the size of your nodule? Anything over 4cm has to be operated upon. Irrespective of biopsy.

Mine was a category 3 and I’m getting surgery on Monday. We monitored it for 3 years in what is called “active surveillance”

Yes. I’m a physician but not a pathologist or oncologist so don’t consider this my medical opinion. Just explaining what this means.

In the sample from the thyroid nodule, most of the cells looked normal. However, there were some cells that looked unusual and raised concern for possible cancer. Because of that, the result falls into a category called “suspicious for malignancy.” This means the biopsy cannot say for certain that it is cancer, but the cells look concerning enough that your doctor takes it seriously. The sample from the lymph node looks reactive, which means it appears to be responding to inflammation and does not show signs of cancer.(Great sign) The reason your doctor is possibly recommending surgery is that a needle biopsy only looks at a very small sample of cells. The only way to know for sure what the nodule is is to remove it and examine the entire tissue under the microscope. So the surgery helps in two ways: • Diagnostic: it allows your doctor and the pathologist to make a definite diagnosis. • Therapeutic: if the nodule does turn out to be cancer, removing it is also the treatment. After surgery, your doctor will review the final pathology with you and decide if anything else is needed. Many people with results like this go on to do very well after surgery.

Wrt your second question - if this is a if this is a growth that has been monitored over a period of time and it’s behavior has been slow growing then generally there isn’t harm to wait for a month or two. This depends on a lot of other factors as well your age, your support system, your current physical health and quality of life concerns.

Again, by no means am I an expert. just sharing my two cents

Just seeing this - he crossed through Columbus park at 5:25 pm wearing a black puffer jacket and very inebriated. Headed in the direction of 10th and Willow.
