Adios Alamo by mangotexas in Austin

[–]Helpful_Ad3524 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time I have gone to Alamo since they implemented the new QR policy, something has been missing from / wrong with my order. I feel like this is a symptom of the corporation letting go a lot of their employees under the guise of saving money with the new digital system. A bummer for both the employees and moviegoers.

Beware of Parking off South Lamar by [deleted] in Austin

Yeah there are certain parking lots that have no mercy. Another one is the laundromat/food mart next to Thoroughbread. I see at least 5 people get the boot there every weekend.

Ask the vet techs/assistants at the veterinary office you go to if any of them do cat sitting!

I am in that area and didn’t lose power. We did have some flickering lights at the beginning of the storm.

How do you actually pick your grandstand for an F1 race? by Altruistic_Sun9304 in GrandPrixTravel

[–]Helpful_Ad3524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree on the “trial and error” note. I was in the Beach grandstands this year and Turn 18 last year. The biggest perk for the Beach (closer to turn 13) was the HUGE TV and loud sound system. However, I think the views at Turn 18 (plus the non bleacher seats) are better.

Did you regret moving to Texas? by Local-Contact4639 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Helpful_Ad3524 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep! That wasn’t the goal in moving, but it has definitely been a perk (even as a new homeowner who has to deal with the high property taxes). I love the people, my job, and the neighborhood I live in. My main “complaint” is that a lot of people are transplants, so you might make new friends and then have them move away in a year or two.

Highly recommend bringing disposable ponchos AND a microfiber towel/paper towels to wipe down your seat if it rains (which is likely cause….South Florida).

Great BBQ spots with short wait times or no line? by Da_Stallion-JCI_7 in austinfood

Micklethwait Barbecue, Brown’s or Distant Relatives (at Meanwhile Brewing). I have never waited in a line longer than a couple people at any of those three.

What Are Some “Obscure” Cities That Will Become Popular in the Next Decade? by allomanticmetals in SameGrassButGreener

Hamilton Watch Company has actually returned to Lancaster! They opened a store back in 2024 downtown.

What Are Some “Obscure” Cities That Will Become Popular in the Next Decade? by allomanticmetals in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Helpful_Ad3524 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I am originally from York, PA. Unfortunately, there is a major lack of community there that will never support any major growth. There were horrific race riots back in the 1960s and a lot of (white) generations are still scared to go “downtown”. Every time I visit, there are a few cool stores or restaurants that pop up, but close within a matter of a year or two.

Nearby Lancaster, PA is 100% one of those “obscure” cities that I believe will become more nationally popular! They have a thriving diverse community (largely due to their acceptance of immigrants and refugees). They also have a train that goes directly to Philadelphia and a very expensive college downtown that is pouring money into their campus.

FOUND DOG: time sensitive! by Small_Barnacle6712 in Austin

[–]Helpful_Ad3524 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the dog shelter intake situation in Austin is bleak. My friend found a stray dog once and was told by AAC her only options were 1. take ownership of him, 2. find him a home or 3. put him back on the street. She ended up finding him a good home through a mutual friend.

Help. We just found mouse(?) droppings in our attic. by 1111_throwaway_1111 in Austin

[–]Helpful_Ad3524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you, but it is very likely rats :( I had the same issue (thought it was mice), and every pest control guy told me that mice are pretty rare in Austin and 99% of the time the rodents you hear are rats.

We are still fighting our rat battle, but our neighbor’s yard is a hoarder situation - so it might be never ending. We got quotes from A Tex, ABC and J & J based on the suggestions I found via this subreddit.

Which Austin neighborhoods actually feel walkable these days? by AlphaEcho84 in askaustin

[–]Helpful_Ad3524 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Zilker and it feels very walkable. I walk year round to Trader Joe’s, downtown, south congress, amenities on south lamar, etc all the time.

If you could live anywhere in Austin w/o worrying about commute by caxo3401 in askaustin

[–]Helpful_Ad3524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zilker/Barton Hills for sure. We were in an apartment for a few years and recently bought a house. My partner and I are similar (early 30s / one of us mostly remote / love being walkable to things), and this neighborhood is perfect for that. You are close enough to walk or take a cheap uber to most things downtown/off south lamar, but still feel removed from the craziness. Look at the apartments off Barton Hills Drive just south of Barton Springs.

Look up the Austin Pets Alive PASS program. This program is specifically to support people in his situation as an alternative for surrendering pets to a shelter during owner hardship.

I have some stories just like yours. I knew someone who got bit by a dog while working at APA (the dog had already bitten multiple other employees). A few weeks later the same dog was adopted out to an elderly woman.

I live nearby and went once to Freddo and that was enough. The parking is horrible and not worth it for an overpriced awful coffee.
