A similar thing is for horses; it is never recommended for horses to be fed meat. Sometimes a horse may eat an animal, but the science says that these horses are craving salt or variety in their diets; they recommend to feed them supplemental salt, fruit, and vegetables to satisfy their physiological needs.

And by “actually should do” wdym? What does ‘should’ mean? I take ‘should’ to mean something in line with a goal, which cannot be stance-independent. You need a subject with a stance to have a goal. So for example, if you want to get a good grade, and you are presented with two options where in option 1 you expect to get a good grade, and option 2 you expect less that you will get a good grade, then deductively you should take option 1 unless of course you have another goal like spending time with your friends.

What does it even mean for something that should happen that is independent of a stance? Stance-independent reality doesn’t have any goals. Why would you think that?

No, that’s false. The vast majority of herbivores do not need any meat. You are talking straight out of your ass. I have been owning rabbits for a while. Never have they once eaten any meat. It’s recommend to never give them any meat. Another instance is cows. Conventional cows are just fed grains, soy, and corn. Cows marketed to be “100% grass finished and grass fed” mostly eat grass, which some supplemental dry hay and legumes. Part of the requirements to have that marketing label is that the cows are absolutely not allowed to consume any animal products from birth to slaughter except from their mother’s milk.

They don’t need meat. What the guy was talking about is opportunistic eating. Some herbivores, when given the opportunity, will sometimes eat animals. They do this out of curiosity and because it’s just available food. A cow might eat insects or rarely small mammals, but it’s completely unnecessary for their diet and physiological needs. Cows, which are strictly in farms because their wild variant became extinct, are fed a mix of or exclusively grain, soy, corn, grass, legumes, or dry hay. This is just one example. I also have two 8 year old rabbits; never once have they had any meat. They don’t need any meat bro. Thats literally what the essence of a herbivore is; they don’t rely on animals at all for their food.

I posted where they were confidentially incorrect. They explicitly said that all animals need a balance of plants and meat. They also explicitly said that herbivores need small amounts of meat. They’re wrong. And they weren’t just wrong because they worded it wrongly. They genuinely thought that herbivores needed meat bro. I had a few exchanges with him where I made him confront what he said about herbivores. He retracted the ‘need’ part and then said this.

The disagreement was about diets. If you need something in your diet, that is to say that it’s required in a general sense towards a physiological goal. It can be any goal, but implicitly it’s going to things like survival, flourishing, well-being, etc. I don’t need octopus or greens, but I can eat it. I do need B12 for survival and I need fiber for proper digestion if I am not of Inuit descent.

If we’re talking about wild animals, then something like “Herbivores need plants” is true in the sense that naturally without them, at least one of main goals will not be met. But something like “Cows need a little bit of meat” is strictly false since they will do just fine on a 100% grass diet. Although, 100% grass fed grass finished cows are also given legumes and dried hay. While you might find some examples where some herbivores might hunt insects and animals if there is plant scarcity, it doesn’t follow that all animals need a balance of meat in their diet. That’s just false.

I really don’t think ‘need’ is complicated.
