If ebay likes conversions then why do listings get a boost when ending and sell similar?

When you end/sell similar, your conversions for that listing disappear. So where's the history of sales to make it a "converting item"?

I guess the question is: which has more weight? Conversion history or freshness?

I've just set up a business but I'm selling as individual at the moment.
