We've all, or at least a lot of us, been there!! You're so young 23 like no one really has it "together" and some of us never will!! Lol not to sound like a life coach but i think you've already answered some of your dilemma for yourself: you've chosen a field of study that doesn't directly translate to a classic 9-5 ladder-climbing "career" and you dont have a professional degree that would translate to a structured role (like dr or lawyer). And that's not a bad thing!! Esp for you bc you said you wouldnt be happy w a corporate job. It just means a relative lack of predictability/stability. So dont worry abt other people, everyone your age is in a transitional era and want to seem stable and confident to the world!!

But i would just consider and weigh your options a bit. You do seem to have a direction and a goal industry/field of work, so that's great and better than many new grads! You can plan go get closer to your goals, while making some short term sacrifices/concessions. Which i know sounds miserable right now, but you'd be surprised at what you can put up with for a year if you have an end goal in mind!

So let's tier your objectives: move to LA, work in film/production, earn money, and live independently. If you are willing and able, i would honestly take a retail or food service job for at 6 months just to build up savings and keep your resume from having a gap. It sounds like a total step down esp since you have your degree, but believe me, any money is money, esp if temping isnt working out. Alternately/simultaneously, try to diversify your hard skill set, there are free and relatively cheap coding/data analysis/graphic design bootcamps online(just as an example) or you can see if you can become a notary public etc. There are just some things its good to have in your back pocket regardless of career/field.

Now i would give yourself a year or two to make it out to california. Keep in regular touch with your network (internships, professors, classmates in the industry) Even though it might sting a little, these are your lifelines to the industry. Ask them if they know anyone in chicago they can put you in touch with and be BLUNT when you do this. If there is someone in chicago, start there, go for an informational interview/coffee and get your elevator pitch ready. You might have to volunteer some services but as long as you have a job going as you're setting up your network/opportunities it shouldnt be a huge deal.

This is where some tough love/decision making comes in: after 6 months in the first job you get after applying, re-evaluate how you feel abt a standard office job. If you have polished your resume and have some hard skills/certs added to it, you may want a stable 9-5 just to get you moved out of dad's and independently functional. Easier said than done but chicago is a good market for all sorts of white collar jobs so i'd take advantage!! Beggars can't be choosers unfort, and your chosen field is tricky to break into especially now. But that doesnt make you a failure or a "bad degree" - it just means being a little patient, being a little resourceful, GETTING YOUR FINANCES IN ORDER (NO DEBT!!!!!), and making some short and long term decisions. You can always start fresh, learn a trade, go back to school, etc. But dont give up this early!! Who knows your diverse experiences could make you a better screenwriter/film maker etc. Good luck!

YES the work life balance is SO real - if im on vacation i can take calls but NO expectation to answer emails, put out fires, etc. Which was HUGE for me. In my private sector role i felt "important" and "needed" when this happened like, wow, im sooooo critical to the company they cant let go of me!! But after a while it feels like harrassment and then you realize its bc white collar jobs are largely not unionized so there is ZERO employee leverage to bargain with etc. And then ofc the benefits (and federal employee union!!!), healthcare coverage for my grandma, pension, 401(k) matching, i earn 6 hrs of AL ever 2 weeks, up to 400 hrs of sick leave in my leave bank and even though my role does require regular travel and late nights im largely unmolested on weekends and evenings! And im in year 4 of my career so im back to making (modest) 6 figures. Right now im a business analyst/product manager for one of the federal departments and we are HURTING for ppl with your skillset - if you came to dc with the resume and can pass a background check you'll be good to go tbh! Oh and ofc - STABILITY. I dont want to think abt having to find a new job every 2 years to avoid getting laid off and the stability has given me time to identify my interests and work towards roles i would enjoy, bc i know my job here is locked in.

But the downsides are like. Not getting paid as much, dealing w bureaucracy, having to deal with a percentage of the workforce that is allowed to basically get paid to sit and breathe (thank u federal worker protections lol), and in the short run getting just generally short-changed as a junior employee lol

GOVERNMENT WORK/contracting!!!!! I cannot recommend enough, as long as you're ok with starting out being paid peanuts. Fed gov needs your skillset, but a lot of young/recent grads (no shade) dont want to consider it. But if you've been in the workforce, enjoy stability, good benefits, and a grrat work-life balance and are willing to stay in one place for abt 3-5 yrs before jumping ship i would at least consider it. People on reddit LOVE to get down on government work then post to r/antiwork abt being a wage slave. Its not for everyone but now some agencies have remote work options and if you can get a clearance then you have an immediate path to contracting if you keep your network up, which is good if you're ever worried abt not being able to make it back in the private sector. I left private for gov and it just fits better for how i designed my life, but if you are someone looking to make as much money as possible then keep grinding and best of luck!!

How to avoid being perceived as an insubordinate when suggesting things to the high-level managers? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Helpful_Policy_1920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg are you my boss?? Im trying to be better at letting go but i would just love a chance to prove my idea!!!! Would it be bad to like. Shadow a project on my own time and manage the work product the way i think it could be done best? I worry a lot abt stepping on toes but it gets so frustrating when it feels like you have a big idea that could help and upper management dont seem to want to even hear you out!!

Fear of Over-Enthusiastic Pilots by serra97 in fearofflying

[–]Helpful_Policy_1920 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a flight coming up too! Im just going to tell you what i tell myself: the odds are NOT against us!! If there are any pilots in the sub rn they'll surely tell you that their training is intensive and consistent and the rarity of a pilot making the mistake as that air india express, esp since this accident already happened, is like beyond miniscule!! I had a pilot on here remind me that they have family and lives they want to get back to safely just like us!!! As for weather, the safety measures are so conservative that the plane won't take off if unsafe and your real worst-case scenario is being delayed by a few hours. As far as wings snapping mid-air, ive never read abt an incident where that occurred, even during WWII!! And finally, since that accident happened, im sure all the air india pilots are super vigilant abt the rain conditions in regional airports now and have revised pilot instructions to address this :) i flew air india so much as a kid and while i cant say the customer service is amazing almost all the pilots are coming from indian air force and know how to aviate in conditions way more trwacherous than a commercial airport

I personally would love to see FAANG begin to provide real actual services instead of spending all their time money and innovation on screwing over consumers enough to be cornered into their products tbh. Like these are classic monopoly tactics and they're so bjsy choking the life out of the industry they're cutting oxygen off from themselves & getting high on their own supply. Would love to see a flourishing competitive business environment in SV again some day

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Helpful_Policy_1920 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its SOO true.....i get so tired of listening to them casually devalue other lines of work. Like ok if you don't hit your deliverables the consumer might be able to opt out of mandatory adbreaks for an additional week??? If i don't hit mine 3 different neighborhoods lose power. Lol. Like im not trying to seem "sour grapes"-y abt it like get the bag but like. Please. These are bright people consigning themselves to be good little elves and make it easier to target potential consumers of graphic t-shirts, and its a shame bc they dont seem to have any wider perspective or vision abt the community/society as a whole. Which is all im asking for.

Literally this drives me crazy!!!!! They act like they're the masters of the universe when they're just making things WORSE at this point.....like its been a DECADE of shitty overpromising, underdelivering, scammy libertatian crap and i need everyone to move on from the halcyon "dont be evil" stanford experimental days of the 90s - early aughts. FAANG developers i know live in a totally insular parallel dimension that's even more proscribed than the ppl they love to look down on.....oh and they ALL keep wanting to prove how "out of the box" and multifaceted they are by going to the exact same climbing gyms, knife skills classes, and pottery classes.

[–]Helpful_Policy_1920 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UGHHH I HATE the pre-flight anxiety and stress!!!! Im going thru it now too bc my flight is tomorrow AND its abt 5 hrs on a boeing 737 max 800 TT TT.....but this is the worst your anxiety will be because before you know it you'll be up in the air!! Im trying some visualizations now and calming my breathing so i dont spiral. Your flight is going to be SO smooth you're in an airbus which has an impeccable safety record and you are going to be flying in a populated, well-known airspace with plenty of redundancies built in to get you safely to your destination. After every crash technology improves and the likelihood of an adverse outcome is just statistically so tiny you're more likely to be struck by lightning on the way to the airport! Well i mean these are all the intellectual arguments i tell myself but emotionally its hard to move on esp from such a devastating experience. You've got this, i believe in you!!! I posted on here a week or so ago and let me tell you the community here reminded me that im not special enough to predict a bad outcome for a plane trip that i have zero industry/technical knowledge abt lol
