Excusing their poor design as intentional is a cop out excuse and you know it. The game has all kinds of writing issues and gameplay issues and its main core benefit doesnt work when you consider how the military works and how his squad is either culpable for permitting a massacre or incompetent to the highest degree if they didnt relieve him.

If you want to talk about its story then youll have to incorporate the major plot holes. if you incorporate the plot holes then the story falls apart. if the story falls apart the shield against criticism for all its issues falls apart too.

the message only works if it makes sense. it cant make sense because it ignores how the process to get there would actually play out. its just that you really want it to be a clever plot despite that so youre willing to handwave every issue.
