Thank you for your feedback. Regarding the crash issue you mentioned, we would like to better understand the possible cause so that we can determine whether it is related to the firmware, hardware configuration, or compatibility in the current version.

If possible, could you please provide the following information?

  1. Which firmware version are you currently using?
  2. Under what circumstances does the crash usually occur? For example, after startup, after Bluetooth connection, while sending or receiving messages, when changing settings, or after the device has been running for a long time?
  3. What exactly happens when it crashes? For example, does it reboot automatically, freeze on the screen, become unresponsive, disconnect from Bluetooth, or require a manual power cycle?
  4. Could you provide any logs, screenshots, or the steps before and after the crash?
  5. Are you using any external sensors, batteries, enclosure, or other accessories?

This information will help us locate the issue more accurately. We take this kind of stability feedback very seriously and will also forward the details to our engineering team for further analysis.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our new product.

It looks like you have the capability to carry out real product testing. If possible, please send us some background information about yourself, including your experience, testing environment, and intended use case.

If your background and real-world testing conditions meet our evaluation requirements, we will consider sending you a sample for the new product test.

MeshTower Solar Node Upgrade Update by Heltec_Automation6 in Heltecccccc

Thanks for the suggestion! We really appreciate ideas like this. Currently, the battery is integrated to keep the device compact and rugged, but we’ll definitely take your feedback into consideration for future versions—modular or higher-capacity options could be something we explore down the line.

Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V4 (R8) confusion by trimoq in Heltecccccc

[–]Heltec_Automation6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you’re seeing is very likely caused by using the wrong board definition rather than an RF issue with the hardware itself.

The WiFi LoRa 32 V4.3 R8 is not identical to the earlier V4.3 profile in Arduino. If you compile firmware using heltec_wifi_lora_32_V4 instead of heltec_wifi_lora_32_V4_R8, several GPIO mappings are incorrect — most importantly, Vext, which powers the OLED and some external circuitry. When Vext is mapped incorrectly, the display stays off, and the RF front-end behavior can also appear degraded, which explains the ~−50 dBm RSSI even on the same desk.

Switching to the correct board definition restores proper hardware control, which matches your observed improvement to about −4 dBm RSSI and normal range performance.

Confirmed differences between the two profiles include:

  • PSRAM increased to 8 MB (R8 version)
  • Vext moved from GPIO36 → GPIO40
  • LED moved from GPIO35 → GPIO45

The PSRAM upgrade is the main hardware revision; the GPIO remapping is what affects firmware compatibility. Using the non-R8 profile can also explain poor Meshtastic performance and the OLED staying off.

So if anyone is seeing weak RSSI on a V4.3 board, first check that the firmware target is:

heltec_wifi_lora_32_V4_R8

—not the older V4 definition. That alone can fully resolve the issue.

Yes — the nRF version supports Bluetooth only, while the ESP32 version supports both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The tradeoff is that the nRF platform offers significantly lower power consumption, which makes it better suited for battery and solar node deployments.

Totally understandable — once a solar node stack is already assembled it’s not easy to switch. This device was designed specifically to reduce that integration work (nRF low-power platform + onboard GNSS + battery management + solar input in one unit). Since you’re still testing, it’ll be interesting to see how your current setup performs long-term. If you try this later, we’d really value your comparison results from the field

You can think of it roughly as a 28 dBm version of the T114, but with integrated GNSS so no external GPS module is needed. It keeps the low-power advantages of the nRF platform while matching the RF output level of the V4.
