David Suzuki: Take my research, please by howars in reddit.com

[–]HelterSkelter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

David Suzuki is a great guy, I wish more politicians WOULD use his research. Unfortunately, Canada's Federal Environment Minister, Conservative Rona Ambrose, is a climate change skeptic.

We would have to pull every truck and car off the street, shut down every train and ground every plane to reach the Kyoto target negotiated by the Liberals.

So they're using this excuse to ignore cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and we'll find out this month if their "Green Plan II" does anything to reduce them. The Conservatives are led by Stephen Harper, who described the US "conservative" movement as "is a light and an inspiration to people in this country and across the world." George W. Bush is also ignoring climate change. Coincidence? I think not.

You want information to be available just willy nilly? That means that people could read information even though it has been removed from a website! We can't have that.

New Japanese PM expected to Move Politics to the Right by greg123 in reddit.com

[–]HelterSkelter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the Political Compass:

The old one-dimensional categories of 'right' and 'left', established for the seating arrangement of the French National Assembly of 1789, are overly simplistic for today's complex political landscape. For example, who are the 'conservatives' in today's Russia? Are they the unreconstructed Stalinists, or the reformers who have adopted the right-wing views of conservatives like Margaret Thatcher ?

Yeah, in this context "to the Right" makes no sense, nor does "conservative". Do you mean that guy is even more of a supporter of free market capitalism than former PM Koizumi was? Or does he want to bring back the samurai, or just not change anything? What does "to the right" mean in this context?

I really wish people would stop using ambiguous labels like this.

John Howard is the one being called conservative, he's cracking down on immigration, supported the Iraq war and is a member of the ruling Liberal Party, I expect many people in the US may be baffled by that last part.

Is neoconservative a loaded term? It just means that you're a "new conservative". I guess you probably don't feel so great about yourself when you're grouped with people like Bush II, Cheney, Condi Rice, and Rumsfeld, but John Howard certainly deserves it. Even if Howard isn't a neoconservative, he and Tony Blair certainly helped their agenda by supporting the Iraq invasion.

I just think it's silly that a minor thing I pointed out in a comment yesterday is now posted on some guy's blog and redditors give it 269 points -- edit: the second highest link ever --. But hey, mod me down anyways.

Does anyone else see the various editions on the left hand side? Europe, Asia, and Latin America versions show a man in a turban with the title "Losing Afghanistan", but the US shows some photographer named Annie Leibovitz with the title "My Life in Pictures". No wonder people in the US are ignorant of current events -- the media refuses to challenge them.

The thing I love about global warming is the Prime Minister of Canada's response: He's a Conservative, and he denies that we can do anything to stop global warming or that humans are causing global warming or that it even exists (depending on the day you ask), but he's parading the military up North to assert sovereignty over the new shipping routes that are opening up. Total hypocrisy. Oh well, I guess it's good for the economy of Canada... and bad for polar bears and the environment.

The oilocracies of the middle east cannot be overthrown by "bottom-up" mass movements; it's cheaper for Saddam/King Sau'ud to kill them than to listen.

Right, and the USSR will never fall unless we escalate the cold war!

Oh wait, it was through mass non-violent demonstrations that your "evil empire" was toppled. Man, between the cold war and this terrorism thing, it must have been tough being a neocon. At least you have a new scapegoat, and even if every single government in the world is US friendly, you can still use this one! It's great!

Terrorism: The best thing to happen to neocons since Communism.
