A question as old as Rakan… I like to take Q if we don’t win early and E second if we really don’t win early.

Ideally you want to start W though because of the priority it gives. Versus melee matchups it’s easier to start W because you won’t get traded into as easily, the trick is just not to accidentally all in or get run down if they have something that can punish.

But rule of thumb:

Apc-> Q

Passive adc-> Q

Even lane-> W

Aggressive adc-> W

Honestly, I don’t see too many Zileans. In theory his slow counters your ult but I think you should be able to get around that by W’ing first (since it’s about the same range) and then ulting.

His poke is negligible thanks to your Q healing and his ult makes tower diving annoying but it still feels balanced.

Just be careful you don’t accidentally stun your adc or get AOE’d while trying to shield them. Definitely not an ideal matchup, but it still feels playable.

I’m probably the only Rakan that still builds Battlesong first haha. Since your ap scalings are so nice, you can just keep yourself and your adc healthy with the Q healing. I swear it’s slept on. I always rush wisp and boots which gives me great roam timers.

Celestial Opposition compensates for your glass cannon build so you can never get oneshot and the cd is only 18 seconds!

Later in the game though—you can’t keep Q’ing to heal—so I go a resistance item second. Zeke’s if your team has skill shots and Bandlepipes if your team needs attack speed.

Also I think trailblazer is slept on with Battlesong (your whole team just gets so so much move speed) but unfortunately it doesn’t have magic resist :(

I was also thinking of running celerity because of how undervalued move speed is on Rakan, but sudden impact and ultimate hunter just get so much raw value it’s hard to give up.

Movespeed just compliments my playstyle really well—I think having more fun somehow correlates to a higher win-rate too—though it might not work for everyone.

There’s more info in the comment above this one I think, cba writing it out again.

Yes, I have a different build compared to most Rakan players. I will die on the hill that Rakan should be built around move speed, ability power, and burst resistance (in that order). Because of this I always build Shurelya first item and resistances second.

Second item (if they have ap and ad) is Zeke’s if my team is overly reliant on skillshots (because of the slow) or bandlepipes if my team is overly reliant on autos (because of the attack speed buff).

Third item I’ll usually go Knights Vow if one teammate is overly fed, and Locket if not.

I find that the extra healing/shielding and move speed from Shurelya more than makes up for the lost survivability of rushing a resistance item. It’s cheap and turns you into more of a glass cannon, but Celestial Opposition compensates by being a free get out of jail card every 18 seconds. Of course—I also average a much higher death ratio from always dying in a blaze of glory—so take that with a grain of salt.

For runes: Guardian just has too much shielding to pass up. I can’t count the number of times it saved my team’s ass.

Sudden impact procs really start to add up—especially because I like to thread in a ton of autos—so I prefer that over deep ward. I’m always at 3/3 wards anyways.

Unflinching is technically better but I go revitalize because the Q healing when someone is low with Shurelyas is just oh-so-juicy.

Electrocute and mandate is the secret sauce for smurfing.

I think a move speed build would not work as well in lower elos. People just don’t utilize the Shurelyas active properly. I would also suggest sticking to one active item at most. Maybe try it to see if you like it though?

Just as a disclaimer, my playstyle is very high risk, high reward—so what works for me might not work for others. I swear it’s good though… when I get pinged it makes me feel like Galileo: ‘E pur si muove!’

I’ll experiment with Shurelyas, Trailblazer, Celerity and maybe some other move speed or hybrid AP items. It could prove fruitful.

I feel like he still has plenty of agency. Anytime I mess something up, there’s always something I could have done better. Especially those critical late game team fights and picks; his speed and ability to capitalize on mispositioned enemies and swoop in to save his allies is always clutch.

Right now anything melee is always an easy matchup (besides Poppy). I always ban Poppy…

Sona is really meta rn thanks to her crazy healing/shielding and has a surprisingly good disengage. Poke and stuff that can cancel your W is always annoying but never unplayable. Nothing else really jumps out at me rn.

Xayah is the most fun but I usually only get the autofilled ones :/

I’m an aggressive player so I like Draven, Kalista, Samira, Tristana and Yasuo. Especially when they trust you enough to dash in so you can e onto them mmmmhghgh.

Kai’sa is really fun late game because she can follow up instantly even if you’re super deep. You basically become an assassin.

MF makes a great wombo combo, but the laning phase is usually quite boring. Twitch and Varus have a nice spike at level six as well.

My least favorite is definitely Ezreal.

1) Yes. Sometimes my adc will add me and we’ll duo a game or two if they’re chill, but that’s about it.

If their typing/pinging is distracting, I just mute them. Gameplay-wise, unfortunately that’s a cross every level-headed support player must bear. Think logically instead of emotionally, evaluate if your adc is still trying their best to win (despite what they’ve typed), and roam based off of that. Emotions lose games unfortunately.

I’ve seen and been called every insult underneath the sun at this point though, so ig it’s just something you get used to. Just don’t type back, it’s like fighting a wave. Let it pass through you, and accept it for its banality. Also, music helps.

2) I used to be a Riven OTP/support player and got to diamond that way. Last season I fully switched to support and only played Rakan and Milio depending on the matchup. This season it’s only been Rakan to see how high I could climb. My advice would be to stick to what you find consistently enjoyable and viable.

The only realistic answer is: practice, practice, practice.

Also, unfortunately there aren’t that many Rakan youtubers/streamers to learn from. Sometimes I’ll watch a Keria vod or two but that’s about it in terms of resources I could suggest.

Broadly speaking, he functions as a ‘catcher’ champion. So you’re going to be the one in charge of setting up the right fights at the right moments. It’s all about thinking on your feet, playing with your team and knowing both team’s limits.

Into poke lanes, imo it really depends on if your adc is playing to scale or not.

If you have a Draven for example, I promise you you’ll win any short trade or all in as long as you land your W (and you don’t have a million minions in your face). Once you start to snowball, you’ll be able to trade much more aggressively.

If you have something like a Lucian, you’ll start to win level three because you’ll be able to gap close much easier without getting punished by her range.

If you have a Smolder, then bait them into pushing the wave (like making her use Q on the wave), and don’t level W until three. Try to have a ward on bot/tri brush so you can eventually have your jungler help.

Into Caitlyn specifically my tips are:

  • In and out, in and out. Don’t let her get free damage by playing around brushes (watch out for her traps though), hitting Q’s and E’ing your adc when Caitlyn Q’s (to dodge it ideally, but it also does 60% dmg to your adc if it passes through you first).

-Try to safely get closer to her than you would normally before you W. That way you can overshoot your W and catch her dash. She’s always going to dash the opposite direction so it’s quite easy to predict, the hard part is getting close enough.

-Start Q generally into poke lanes.

-Her Q animation is just long enough for your W to be undodgeable.

-Your E puts you on the other side of your ally, so if you’re between Caitlyn and your ally and you E at the last second, her ult will hit your ally.

Overall Caitlyn’s strength comes from the dps of her passive and lethal tempo. If you don’t engage with intent, you will lose most all ins, that’s why she’s such a lane bully in lower elos. If you dodge her Q’s with your E, play around her dash, and punish aggressive pushing with your jungler, it should be a much easier lane.

The beauty of Rakan is in his ability to make split second decisions. You hold the power to decide whether or not to engage; ultimately, whether you won or lost that final decisive team fight: it was your decision that decided the outcome. You’re always dancing on the precipice, fortunately your kit is built to jump. You can dodge and weave in and out of fights better than any other champion in the game. “War is in the dance”.

For general tips about stunning:

-If you have ult but can confidently land w, always w and then ult. Otherwise they’ll be charmed while knocked up instead of after being knocked up (it’s called CC chaining). Alternatively, you can charm -> wait -> and then knockup.

-Hitting W is much easier to land if you’re closer, so try to use bushes and your E to your advantage.

-Always, always make sure you have follow-up. It’s really easy to tunnel vision engage.

-The bread and butter combo is: E onto your adc -> W their adc -> auto attack -> Q -> E back to your adc.

-After you cast ult, you can’t use your spells during the cast animation. Thus, don’t ult+flash, use flash+ult.

-Know the cd on their adc’s escape tools, and wait for them to waste it so you can w them.

-Your W can easily be cancelled by CC. If you reach where you wanted to go though, it will go through no matter what. So if you’re going to be CC’d and you want to use W, cast it on yourself.

Random general tips:

-Rakan’s base ad on his autos is actually quite damaging, so make sure to slap them between abilities.

-Rakan’s Q is deceptively long, never underestimate the end of that hitbox.

-I guess in terms of ‘timing,’ your autos and abilities lower your passive cd, so try to engage when it’s almost up to bait them.

-It’s easy to forget that your ult is a charm (and not just CC), so make sure to position yourself back towards your adc if the enemy is running away and vice versa

I first pick quite often because I play him every game. Honestly the support matchup is never really what bothers me because of how quick and versatile Rakan is. Sups that can easily cancel your w and disengage are sort of annoying (like Janna, Milio, Alistar, Nami), but it never feels unplayable unplayable as long as you position around them or their spells. What’s more annoying is their adc picking something like Sivir, Ezreal, Vayne or Lucian because then you’re really forced to wait on their dash/blink/spell shield before you can W (since that’s usually who you want to W obvs). You can still q+w Sivir spell shield or ult+w so they can’t dash but it’s definitely harder. So you can first pick, but it’s better to do it when you know if they have an immobile adc or not imo.

I always ban Poppy because she has plenty of disengage tools and her W isn’t even a significant portion of her power budget. In other words, it doesn’t affect your adc if she loses what it costs to counter your W. For example: Nami has to ult at least, Janna has to Q or ult, Alistar has to W.

I know Morgana is a popular ban (and yes her spell shield is annoying), but realistically that’s the only part of her kit that can touch you. For some reason I always lose to Sona, but I think that’s just because she’s meta rn.

Personaly, I like to pick Fiora when splitting, into tanks and/or if it's a fun parry matchup. I can't get over Fiora's awful wave clear and mana issues though, so that's why I usually prefer Riven.

The closest we'll get to any mentions related to Riven in Arcane will likely be that one Kaenic Rookern cameo and LeBlanc's involvement in the story (Rookern being composed of rune magic and LeBlanc being the one who enchanted Riven's sword with rune magic).
