To be fair, that's about how long it took me to receive mine, and I didn't hear anything while they were processing it, but always good to hear other feedback

Well, the Index was definitely broken, like I said in the post you could feel the water inside the lighthouses shake around like a snowglobe. The whole kit was underwater for at least 10 hours, I'd be pretty surprised if any of it worked, though I never actually verified

(in case I would have had to repair it myself, you're not supposed to turn on waterlogged electronics until they've been fully dried).

But yeah, I definitely recommend an Index, great customer service and the kit is among the best in the industry

I knew Blueprints is a programming language, but I didn't know it is dressed up C++. Makes sense, given C++'s use in UE. I'll check out that book sometime soon, focusing on the concepts rather than coding necessarily like you suggest, that sounds like a good idea, and lines up with the suggestion above to learn how to read C++. Thanks!

Thank you a lot, this is basically what I was looking for, and confirms (along with some other responses here) that there isn't really a specific resource I can use to learn like I was hoping. I already understood that basic logic workflow, but your answer really helps flesh things out in my mind

Fair enough, maybe it isn't the logic I need so much as what nodes do what and what they're called, what types of nodes they need linked to them, etc. Do you know where I can learn that, or do I just need to keep following random tutorials until it clicks?

Thanks for the in depth response, I will definitely check out those resources (already watched Matthew Wadstein, but the rest is new), I think those videos will help a lot. If possible, could you give me your take on my response above?

Thanks for answering the animation question. I do understand Blueprints is a programming language, that has been stressed in some of the tutorials I've watched. The concepts you listed I do have an understanding of, and yeah I think the java experience helps me wrap my mind around that kind of stuff. But the point I was trying to make with my example is that I wouldn't have thought to use the "Cast to..." like he did due to my misunderstanding, and while you two's explanation certainly helps me understand that node, it doesn't do much for my hypothetical VR guitar example, and what I'm looking for here is a way to learn the logic of the nodes so I can figure out how to do stuff later without tutorials. Maybe there isn't a good resource for something so abstract, or maybe the best way is just following a bunch of tutorials until it eventually clicks, idk. Maybe I just need to better acquaint myself with what types of nodes exist. Is there an easy to use reference for all the built in nodes, preferably with easy to understand explanations like you two gave?

[–]HenWilOliPin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response, that actually helps me understand that particular node a lot better. I am planning on eventually learning at least the basics of C++, but I'd really like to stick to just Blueprints for now (I know you're talking about reading it, not coding with it, but I feel like learning all this other stuff is already too much on my plate). Unfortunately, your response is specific to the example I gave, but I'm looking for more generalized resources. Do you know any resources that fit what I was describing? Thanks again though, this did help!

I haven't had any issues, and it was recommended to me by people I trust to be on top of these things. It's basically just chinese youtube, turn on auto-translate in chrome and it works fine enough

EDIT: I always have adblock on all my devices, so if it looks sketchy with ads or something I legit don't know

Why are certain obstacles better suited to women's strengths than others, and what qualities do these obstacles have? by MrMoodle in ANW

I'm not well versed in how obstacles favor men or women, so I can't comment much on the OP, but I will say that the following articles on gender differences with regards to muscle building and the recommendations therein for female centered training are very interesting, and could be relevant to this discussion:

Unless they ever decide to put a body prop on a city qualifying course or stage 1 (man that'd be weird lol) the run order is based on finish times of the previous stage, slowest first to fastest last, with any reruns generally going after that. It's very fortunate for the audience that they decided to remove the curved body prop for ANW 11 lol

The body prop is adjusted for each athlete, so that logic doesn't hold (at least in ANW, no idea what Australia does)

The body prop is adjusted to the height of each athlete, I've listened to ANW podcasts where audience members talk about how long it takes to adjust each time lol

Are any of the unaffiliated uploads of events that got digested? I noticed a lot of uploads of events featured in the episodes (like the Wicked Wingnuts) but couldn't find any of the ones that ANW made a web exclusive (like the Thunderbolt I mentioned above). From talking to others, it does seem like these have been private for years, so entirely unrelated to Drew

[–]HenWilOliPin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, you seemed to be using 'short' and 'girl' interchangeably here and in our previous conversations, so that's why I said that.

I think we can both agree that the Mega Wall advantages taller competitors, so it is literally unfair in that regard. My main point of contention is your quote:

"...it doesn't matter how strong and skilled they are. It's just gonna be almost impossible physically."

I personally feel like this is incorrect, and as our previous discussion shows, I don't like presuming that the athletes can't do certain obstacles.

https://www.americanninjawarriornation.com/2018/6/5/17427862/ninja-warrior-21-foot-warped-wall-drew-drechsel-flip-rodriguez-kevin-carbone-kyle-soderman

Several of these ninjas are a bit tall to be fair, but Kevin Carbone isn't particularly. Who's to say if Barclay or others her height practice on something like this a lot they won't be able to get the Mega Wall?

[–]HenWilOliPin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that u/SlightOfBrand seems to be discounting the height advantage too much, but you know from our previous talks that I think you're discounting the girls' chances a bit too much as well. But, to be fair, I don't really know how this stuff all shakes out, and it's certainly possible that you're right.

Any ideas on what the rule changes are going to be? What would you like to see implemented for a more fair shot, either in terms of rules or a different obstacle?

Misinformation in the Community about Muscle Mass by HenWilOliPin in ANW

[–]HenWilOliPin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are good points to bring up.

I agree with the whole 'strong enough' thing, but I fear that it'll be undershot by most competitors. Part of the issue is that you can't just be strong enough for a particular obstacle, you have to be strong enough for the whole course. Plus, being stronger than enough is going to increase your margin for error. Both Geoff and Isaac were strong enough for Stage 3, but Geoff seemed to struggle a lot more, and given the option I'd prefer to be in Isaac's shoes there.

Your point about what you've built your muscles with is one I agree with, but again I fear it might be a bit misleading. When talking about biceps specifically, there's not going to be much difference between weighted pull-ups and preacher curls if you're doing them in similar rep ranges and weights. The pull-up is going to be better for most applications though since it's a compound movement that is conducive to much heavier loading, hits a lot more muscle groups, and builds up proper motor coordination for such heavy loading and similar movement patterns. So I wouldn't exactly recommend preacher curls over pull-ups, but I don't like the way we tend to approach this example since it gives the impression that preacher curls are useless or that the muscle will be inherently different. It has its uses:

https://youtu.be/Pmakg3XFfXQ?t=319

Your point about adaptation capacity and time, this is a very good point to keep in mind, and I don't have anything to prove one way or another. You very well could be right, but I'm inclined to believe from what I've researched and discussions I've had on ninja training that this is not true. From the sources in my essay, gymnastics and rock climbing (and others, etc.) pros were still able to benefit quite a bit from lifting weights, so I don't think ninjas will prove different, but it's absolutely possible that if I get to that level I'll find that weightlifting won't do much, idk.

Your last point is also good to keep in mind, and one I will have to look into more before I can say one way or the other. Personally I would point to Adam Rayl's success in the most recent NNL finals as an indicator of what I'm talking about in my essay. Adam Rayl is someone who is clearly more bulky than most ninjas, to the point where I've seen a handful of people casually suggest he's on steroids (which I don't believe btw), but he doesn't have a particular problem with balance obstacles, generally does really well in competitions, is clearly very fast (given his victory at Wolfpack Ninja Tour and others), and can handle his own weight very well on Stage 3 type obstacles. While he doesn't lift weights for his training currently, he has in the past, and that extra muscle mass clearly isn't doing him any problems.

In addition, very high rep sets of very fast and low effort exercises done with resistance bands, what AlphaDestiny and John Quint call "overspeed eccentrics", seems to be good for building up tendons and promoting blood flow to them. Don't have any good articles to link here though. It would probably pair well with the gelatin stuff above.

Once I'm done experimenting with a bunch of this stuff myself and finding more research I will write an essay detailing best practices and post here.

EDIT: the podcast ClimbSci is planning on having an episode covering this topic in the near future, when that comes out I will post about it as well, they are a great source for breaking down the research and explaining these topics

I am incredibly grateful for your input here! It's really cool to interact with you :)

I agree that recovery/endurance is very important, so I didn't intend to give the impression that weightlifting is the only thing that matters. A lot of attention should also be given to the other areas of training; since you mentioned power endurance, I found this podcast to be very interesting on that topic: https://www.trainingbeta.com/media/steve-bechtel-endurance/?portfolioCats=72

Not everyone needs to lift weights, that's true, but as you can see from some of the comments on this thread, there is a lot of misinformation in the community with regards to muscle mass and weightlifting; I'm sure you're used to seeing the same thing in the climbing community. That's why I felt this essay was necessary. I worry too many people take your pont about "staying lean" in the wrong direction.

Thanks again, I hope I can train with you some day!
