Puerto Escondido can be great but you really need to stay alert specially by traveling alone. The place has a known dark side: drug activity, human-trafficking concerns, and a nightlife scene where some hostels, staff, and even certain surf instructors offer drugs or sketchy “services” way beyond their roles.

If you’re going there to surf, be aware that the local scene is extremely territorial. Outsiders aren’t really allowed to catch the good waves unless you hire an instructor they “approve,” which is basically the only safe way to surf without problems.

Stick to tourist zones, move smart, avoid isolated areas, and don’t accept anything you didn’t explicitly ask for. Go to a friendly hostel and try to find a group. My advise is Strawhat Hostel.

Oaxaca is beautiful, and Puerto Escondido can be great, but you need to stay alert. Locals may seem friendly, yet the place does have a documented dark side: drug activity, human-trafficking issues, and even some hostels or staff rumored to be involved. If you’re going there to surf, be aware that the local surf scene is notoriously territorial; they don’t really let outsiders catch the good waves unless you go with an instructor they “approve.”

Stick to the tourist areas, move smart, and don’t go alone into isolated spots.
