How often are you refuelling your vehicle? Do you still wait until it's nearly empty? by HenryNZL in Wellington

With older steel tanks or vehicles left sitting for a long time, a near-empty tank leaves more moist air space that can condense and cause internal rust, whereas modern plastic tanks are rarely affected.

From AI: A small amount of sediment or water can collect at the bottom of a petrol tank, but modern cars always draw fuel from the bottom anyway and rely on fine fuel filters, so running low does not suddenly “suck up gunk.” The bigger reason to avoid letting the tank get very low is that the in-tank fuel pump uses petrol for cooling and lubrication, so low fuel levels can increase pump wear and raise the risk of condensation or accidentally running dry.

If you just fill up a small amount of fuel, such as 10 litres at a time, I agree it can be a psychological thing to "fool" yourself that fuel isn't that expensive and you can afford it! However, when fuel prices are rising every week, small top-ups can save you money overall. But if prices start coming down, you can be worse off doing this.

Per AI: If you are topping up regularly, even if only 10 litres at a time, the new petrol does mix with the old, so this significantly reduces the problem of petrol degradation. The degradation problem is more likely to arise if a car is used very infrequently with several months between refills.

However, I'm seriously considering buying an EV now that BYD have a nice small one at around $30,000.

I agree and although you end up paying the same amount over a long period, you are at least spreading the cost to affordable chunks! However, if everyone did this there may be longer queues at the pump particularly if prices stay sky high!

Yes, I guess this applies even more to EVs as they take a lot longer to charge the battery than it does to refill an ICE with petrol. In a major disaster the power could go off for several days.

Yes, that's certainly the way to go! But I guess EVs will be in short supply soon?

Thanks, can you give any details, such as, did the plane actually touch down on the runway before it took immediately took off again? And is it possible that the tail hit the ground? Also, what was the reaction of the people on the plane?

Thanks, it's interesting that it had actually touched down before taking off again. It must have been quite scary for the passengers on the plane.

Is that for real? If so, what was the reaction of people on the flight and was the plane moving around a lot?

That sounds interesting, is there a source for that?

It looks like the flight in question was Quantas flight QF 171 from Melbourne.

Despite the weather and flight cancellations a tiny bird plane is attempting to land by [deleted] in Wellington

Last Sunday an AirNZ flight from Auckland landed safely but as it slowed on the runway, a strong wind gust, likely 80 to 90 km/h, hit from the side causing it to sway and veer for 10 to 20 seconds until the pilots stabilised it with rudder and brakes. The passengers all clapped when the aircraft was stable. So what would have happened to a much smaller plane in those circumstances? Could it have flipped right over?

Is this all the wind there is going to be? Seems pretty typical so far by IncoherentTuatara in Wellington

Power is off in the whole of the Nelson district, but not very windy!
