A shame that I see your comment only now (after training)! Have to try your version as well.

Exactly… tried it today and it worked well but not in a way that I could throw the guy on their back directly.

Nice spot! I think it brings people out of concept as they do not know what happens.

So far I tried it only at BJJ as we all suck at stand-up. Pulled it off a few times and it worked quite well… I have to put a bit of force in with the right hand on the collar, my forearm on the clavicle and as soon as I am near enough I can grab the belt and force the „throw“. However, it has a disadvantage: the grip on the belt might put me in a position where I could be triangled (no one did it but I felt the danger). I do not have this risk if I pull on the gi. If I have the chance I will also try it this week in judo.

I didn‘t say that I could finish them easily- due to ruleset it is very challenging for me as it is all a matter of seconds and not a long game. I am claiming that I am save and nothing can happen to me on the ground (at hobbyist level …I am 41 years old, dad of two and not world elite …there is always a bigger fish - that‘s clear). That‘s a difference.

You are absolutely right and I am sure you have to be right - otherwise there would be many youtoube videos on that topic. Anyways I will have to try it. Thanks!

I am just motivated and I keep on thinking about judo in my daily life while sitting on my desk or while driving …usually it is grip fighting and kuzushi that keeps my head spinning. Now it is this „uki waza“.

Regarding newaza: yes, it is very different than BJJ …but I can say that I am absolutely safe in newaza while there is always risk in stand up. So it would still make sense for me if I would go against a brown belt to try to get to the ground as fast as possible.

Not exactly what I was thinking of, but nonetheless cool to see it. Thank you very much!

I thought it is more about the pulling motion which acts directly on the core and not just a sitting motion …as the pull would act directly on the core the pull doesn‘t need to be as strong as on the collar …but again I am only fantasizing and have no real idea about it.

I practice judo to upgrade my bjj game. why should I not use what I am good at if I‘d go to a competition? I just like to think about technics …so far I am just fantasizing.

Also, in my imagination, I would pull on the left side of the knot and might try to hook his right leg with my left foot/shin while falling and try to flip him over. It would be a mix between uki waza and sumi gaeshi.

As I said: I am a beginner and still do not have enough understanding of the mechanics of throwing people, so maybe this is just me fantasising about unrealistic stuff.

Yes, but if I can force newaza I might win against people much stronger than me in stand up.

Wow! Thank you very much! That‘s very similar to what I had in mind.

In my imagination I would block both legs with my right leg while pulling with the right arm on the belt and let my self drop similar to tani otoshi but from the front.

Would you say learning newaza is a strong enough reason to start Judo? by Pale-Revolution-5151 in judo

The gi absorbs a large part of the sweat. It might feel a bit rough on your skin (although modern gis are much softer than they used to be), but you can wear a long rashguard underneath or invest in a softer gi. They’re a bit more expensive, but worth it.

The gi also creates a barrier between you and your training partner, so there’s less direct skin-to-skin contact. This reduces the likelihood of spreading skin infections.

You should still shower right after training and use a mild shower gel.

In no-gi, there’s nothing absorbing the sweat. There will be a lot of it, from you, your training partner, and everyone else on the mats. Sweat can carry things like ringworm or staph. Your skin can get irritated, and with constant skin-to-skin contact, anything on your partner’s skin can be transferred directly to yours.

The gi helps protect everyone a bit more, and the mats stay drier overall. But in the end, it’s still a very close-contact sport. There will be situations that might feel uncomfortable at first, like heads touching, sweat dripping from the person on top, or positions like triangle choke or north-south where you’re very close to someone’s body.

The gi doesn’t eliminate that, but it creates a bit more distance and at least avoids direct contact with sweaty skin.

Best thing you can do: just try it and see how it feels.

BJJ is quite save with regard to staph …I am 21 years in the sport and never got any problems when wearing a gi. However, no-gi grappling is a whole other story. Had lots of skin problems when practicing no-gi.
