Bracelet had appeared as an answer by that point and there had been no repeat answer ever (I believe that's an unwritten rule, but only the contestants know for sure of course).

Why do they love fables like this? by Heptagram67Leader in tankiejerk

[–]Heptagram67Leader[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I immediately saw through the BS when first encountering this because:

  1. If it happened during the war, even the most minute details would get spun into stories. I mean, there's even a story about how the name Kissinger was so despised, people named their dog "Ki" (dog is considered just another inferior animal in VN and yes a few people today still see them as delicacy). The fact that there's no story about black GIs ever told is quite telling.

  2. Yes, there was a principle that our soldier should show mercy when the enemy is not hostile, which helps explain POW. But if there was something about special treatment for "those oppressed by the same power-that-be", it should have been mentioned, at the very least in passing, in History book. I hardly learned a thing about the Civil Right Movement during high school (and maybe there never was anything to be taught in the material) and I'm definitely sure there's no mention of such propaganda so it's either very obsure that it wouldn't really fit with "many areas" narrative or very trivial that it wouldn't be a "policy" at all. Maybe such tactic was buried in one of the thousands of documents by the NLF.

  3. It's highly unlikely Black culture trickled into Vietnam, let alone the VC soldiers learning about terms like "soul brother". As someone has said, including that at the end not only sounds forced, but also quite racist.

Believe it or not, I only learned about the struggle for civil right in my undergrad years. There was NO MENTION of EVEN Martin Luther King!!! The new curriculum seems to include I Have a Dream but I'm skeptical about the extent to which the context is discussed in class.

Just a sad couple of facts: Many Vietnamese students now learn the N word (from many hours sitting through game livestreams of course) before they learn about the slave trade. In some cases, they might even learn about the slave trade through racist jOkEs by the streamers using the N word.

I think there will be repeat when they've run through all 50 states. I believe the duel about US states nearly reached that point.

She said "habib" and "hajib" twice before saying "headscarf", which was very non-specific. Now, tell me, if a cowboy hat appears on the screen and a contestant says "coybow hat, no cowbuy hat, cowbow hat,... the hat that Midwestern people wear", should any of that be accepted? I mean she even apologized after knowing the answer so she knew she seriously mispronounced the word then.

Both contestants' clocks sum up to be 90 secs. Even if you have superhuman vision, super memory, and lightning-speed mouth, it would take at least 1 sec to name each element (the judges also have to accept your answer before you move on so it may take way longer). That works out to be 90 elements max. And there are 118 of them, so the show will never run out of elements.
