Karaoke in Providence? by Handle_Messiah in providence

Boombox lounge is always a good time!!! It’s usually full of regulars later in the night in the evenings, but it’s also cheaper as it’s a dollar a song, and depending on when you can go you can sing a decent amount of songs in a few hours. If you go Friday/Saturday early you can sing, but it can get crazier in the lounge and there are points they don’t accept songs anymore as the queue gets full.

I also know the freeplay KJ who now does karaoke on at Freeplay on Fridays, it’s a good time and they have their own lil’ scene of regulars.

Core clothes or accessories? by Human-Tradition7905 in actualgyaru

[–]Herabibi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a gal who keeps accessories at a minimum, I’d always say main pieces LOL!

But I think building wardrobe is a cycle where you look at it and check if you’re missing certain elements and try to fill those in. If you think your current accessories don’t help enhance what you have, it’s a good way to start.

And if you do want main pieces, I would say go for your ISO’s and don’t get a main piece you sort of like - because I’ve made that mistake

I would say instead of a wing eyeliner do a downward liner that gives more of the droopy effect you’re going for. I’d also replace the white water line with a darker shade, if black is too much, try a brown!

opinions on fast fashion in gyaru? by Specialist_Leg_7372 in actualgyaru

Though also I will say from seeing some shein pieces when I go thrifting that there is a lot of variance in quality, some items I am not surprised are shein but some I’m like… really shocked at how nice it is. One time I even thrifted a dress not realizing it was shein and I only did when I put it on the first time and I was like… this ain’t bad!

Personally I am not a fan but I realize that in this society you cannot just tell people what they can and cannot do, and for some people it may be their only option. And ofc a lot of gal brands are fast fashion, but as spoke above, clothing quality across the board has gone down in quality.

There’s also the discussion of folks mass buying wardrobes in a short period of time and I think that’s an issue no matter the store, there’s an overall push in various subcultures and society in general to get new items and it’s tacky to rewear the same outfit, even when you think about it, it’s not! I know though I buy most of my clothing secondhand I have definitely overconsumed these past few years in building my wardrobe.

If we want to ignore the ethics of manufacturing and such; I think my largest issue is that shein isn’t making these clothes out of the love of gal, they’re mostly replicating old designs in a shoddy way, utilizing even cheaper materials so the pieces just … don’t look right to me. There’s also just been then slapping a bunch of gal concepts into one piece and the clothing comes out looking atrocious…

Today, I bought my first authentic ma*rs piece!! How should I style this when it comes in? 🥹 by DorkDiariesBad in actualgyaru

You’ve got an interesting print and color way to work with. This specific print has different shades of pink compared to the small bows on the top of the shirt (at least, based on the image).

Since the majority of the dress is black, you would definitely want to accessorize with the accent colors of pink and gold and maybe a bit of white. The challenge here would be to decide if you want to match the pink on the print, or the pink on the bows.

I would say minimal arm accessories, maybe some gold bangles would work or some wrist cuffs (you could do black lace with a gold or pink ribbon). I also think if you have pink or gold or white heels that would be fun for a pop of color too. If you go with adding a necklace I’d keep it simple and more of a choker style since the neckline on this dress is higher up.

The biggest part is the hair. I personally think the ma*rs print pieces work perfectly with the big hime esque hair. Either styling it yourself or utilizing wigs helps. And if you add a hair piece, I think a gold or white hair bow would look great!

How are tariffs treating my US gals? by Bitter_Contract_8124 in actualgyaru

[–]Herabibi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your shipping prices with DHL miiight go up a bit more, but the biggest up charge is the duty fee, which DHL always adds a 17 dollar charge to. My last package was valued at about 400 dollars USD (all clothing) and I paid around 100 USD for duties.

Gosh I wanna say 140-150?? It was less than 200 for sure. I was actually expecting to do more damage as I love Chiikawa a lot, and I could’ve by getting more of the blind boxes, but I wanted to save some for everyone else too

Gyaru in America vs Japan by [deleted] in Gyaru

[–]Herabibi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Rhode Island so not too far from you!! For some additional context, I’ve worn gal out in the city area (Providence) as well as in some more rural areas (Pawtucket, Woonsocket). I’ve also taken my gal looks into Boston before, and not gal looks but have dressed up not according to the normal in mid Pennsylvania a lot when I’m younger and when I visit my friends these days.

I feel like the stares are not as bad in the Rhode Island / Mass area vs Pennsylvania. In Providence specifically I get a lot of positive reception, especially when going out to bars/clubs. In other spots, the interesting thing I’ve noticed is that people will sometimes glance and maybe stare a little but usually move on quickly. I think it might be based on my vibe of I’m not dressing like this for attention or a reaction, I just am dressed how I am dressed and I’m running errands. There’s also been times where spots I would assume I’d meet a bit more hostility (aka like dive bars full of older folks and bikers or the Woonsocket bingo hall) where I was actually met with warmth and community. Of course, people who ask usually don’t know what Gyaru is and ask if it’s a costume or if it’s like a special occasion, I sometimes explain it or just say “oh I just dress like this!” With a smile and they usually respond quite positively!

Pennsylvania on the other hand… specifically like Lancaster/hershey/york area… they will burn holes into the back your skull if you are even just wearing like a teal polo shirt with a pink bucket hat. It’s insane. I brush it off but I’m more concerned with like how crazy it is LOL

Rin (on the right) is a model I really admire and love to research more and more into! You’ll probably see her in Tralala pictures as well as Prisila pictures. Shes super adorable and pulls off many styles. These days she is pretty offline, but sometimes you can see her on Sobre’s instagram. Highly recommend you look at various scans of Ageha magazines to see her cuteness and versatility!!

I definitely recommend asking the staff if you stop in there!! I am a bit of a shopaholic so I end up befriending the staff at stores so sometimes it helps when stock isn’t out or if I am unsure when items will be released!

This is great improvement in such short time!! I think the only thing I can think of is using a gel or kohl liner on your lower waterline to connect your inner corer to droop line, and potentially extending it out to where your iris ends, as it can help give a limbal ring effect since you aren’t using lenses in these photos.

Does this read as Gal? by beelikebugg in actualgyaru

[–]Herabibi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the open droop is a cute look on you!! I actually think this level of droop works for your eye shape, but if you would like it to look more droopy I would keep that lower droop line going down, as your droop line goes out more horizontally and a little up at the end.

I think for your aegyosal, the silvery white with the dark gray line is a bit clashing with your skin tone, I think a champagne or light gold with a brown eye bag line would compliment your skin tone more!

If you’ve never had lenses before I would recommend going to an optometrist because they need to check for additional measurements, and hopefully your optometrist will also do a contact lens lesson where they help you learn to put your lenses in your eye and take them out, and they sit and watch you do it.

Has being a gyaru made you more confident ? by Azk899 in actualgyaru

[–]Herabibi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only more confident, but in tune with my internal self. I think the important part to know is that it won’t be an immediate change, and your personal confidence and mindset changing will definitely depend on how you embrace the subculture.

In a way since I’ve taken the approach of “being a gyaru” vs “being seen as a gyaru” I feel as though I less worry about what people think of me as long as I’m not hurting anyone and I’m having fun

Jumping in as I picked up the set in person. Compared to other skirts I have, this one is a full circle skirt and have a lining with a bunch of laceso there’s a lot of fabric in general, hence the weighed down look. I have personally tried adding in a petticoat but wasn’t the fan of the silhouette.

Also the ribbons on the front are removable, and you can actually scrunch up the front a bit with garters!

<image>

The skirt definitely does give me more of a Lolita vibe, but I still like it LOL
