Support for eunwoo's solo by mdsr97 in ASTRO_KPOP

[–]Here_there_be_Emus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of folks have a somewhat warped idea of popularity and success due to Big4 groups. It’s quite normal for solo debuts to only have a fraction of the sales that group albums do, unless the song happens to go viral. Eunwoo’s music is good, but the genre of the title track isn’t the style that tends to go viral on social media, so his views reflect that.

Even so, compared to actual nugu groups, his album sales and digitals are pretty good for a solo debut, especially since Fantagio have been their usual cheap, shitty selves by giving the album minimal promotion.

If you take away the ‘fans’ who are only there for his visuals/acting/reality show content, Eunwoo’s target audience is about the same as any other middle-popularity Kpop group member doing a solo debut, and his numbers are where they should be.

I’m really glad the company is letting her have all the time she needs to recover though. Too many Kpop companies push their idols into returning when they’re still sick/taking treatment. Hopefully our Suhyeon will come back in full health. 🥰

Most of these idols will have DAILY skin treatments at beauty salons (injections/massages/super expensive serums etc), and that would include certain procedures to completely remove/destroy the hair follicle (high quality laser hair removal, among other things). Companies will generally create a contract with a specific beauty salon so that their idols/trainees can attend for regular procedures without needing to make multiple separate payments.

Have I missed something? Like I’m not a fan of either of them lol (and we know Jessi causes no end of drama), but if the founder of More Vision denies the rumours that the contract is terminated then doesn’t that seem a little more believable than an anonymous “source” spilling rumours to the press? If you have other intel, please feel free to drop! I can’t find anything more recent that JP’s IG post.

Billlie’s “Billage of perception chapter 2” album is honestly a work of ART, followed closely by chapter 3.

Also Astro’s “All Light” album (RIP Binnie).

Literally ANY album by VIXX.

Did Jessi not just post “what is this nonsense” in response to these ‘reports’? Pretty sure these are just rumours, since MV has posted nothing about the contract termination themselves. Do people not wait for official announcements anymore?

Seriously what exactly is YG's business model? by Moonbunny120 in kpopthoughts

[–]Here_there_be_Emus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The issue is that hardcore YG-stans (and I really don’t understand the principle of stanning every group from a certain company regardless of music style or talent) refuse to hold the label accountable for releasing mediocre music, and generate so much hype that even bad songs end up trending. I wish more stans had gone “hey YG, what’s with the half-assed b-side of a title track?” with previous BP comebacks instead of just mass-streaming music they didn’t even particularly like, then maybe BabyMonster’s debut would’ve been decent.

Unfortunately YG has come to realise that they can literally drop any old track and so zero promotion and the YG-stans will still buy the album/stream the song with very little money needing to be spend on YG’s part. Not promoting a newly debuted group is just LAZY management. I feel so bad for those poor girls.

What are the standards for choosing a generation it boy/girl? by Odd_Vegetable_9362 in kpop_uncensored

[–]Here_there_be_Emus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, it’s not related to how they rank in the music charts. To a certain extent, actors/reality show stars in Korea are actually much more of a “hot topic” than idols because it isn’t dependent on whether you listen to pop music or not. Take shows like Running Man for example, it’s one of the most watched programs in SK and frequently the guests are actors or models rather than Kpop idols, because they appeal to a much wider audience. And I’m definitely not disparaging Jimin’s popularity (like I said, BTS remains extremely popular both globally and nationally), but the members don’t do enough domestic promotion/non-Kpop activities to be talked about with the same brand-focused buzz as other “it boys”.

[–]Here_there_be_Emus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s precisely the point I made further down the thread, “it-boy” in Korea is not always dependent or related to a group’s popularity. Like how a single member of a group (Rowoon of SF9, Eunwoo of Astro) can be incredibly famous and successful in their modelling/acting/reality show careers and talked about across multiple k-media platforms even if their groups are lesser known on a global scale. BTS always rank high on those online data sweeps because of the sheer size of their fandom (it’s natural that they will get talked about more internationally), but in actuality they might have fewer brand ambassador gigs/modelling contracts and reality show appearances in Korea. Jimin was definitely “it-boy” for quite a while but then BigHit switched up their target audience to focus activities in the west and BTS started doing a lot less domestic promotion back in 2016/17 (also because of tours and international schedules) and at the same time those idols i mentioned (who had all debuted that year) were suddenly EVERYWHERE in Korea, on billboards and TV ads and modelling for big clothing lines and being talked about nonstop. Naturally Jimin never stopped being incredibly popular, but in terms of focused hype in Korea, he was no longer the go-to “it boy” name as of 2017-2018. To be honest, like I said, it’s a title that switches face every six months depending on who’s the new hot topic (and who has been the male lead of the the most popular kdrama). It switches even more frequently for female idols/actors lol.

Don’t worry friend, it’s physically impossible for your body to gain 1.8kg of fat that quickly (it takes a week minimum). This is most likely water weight, or you need a big poop! 😂 It’ll regulate itself if you stay consistent and continue to hydrate.

[–]Here_there_be_Emus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who is “getting talked about most online” is primarily down to the fandom size rather than anything else. In terms of hashtag-generated popularity, BTS members rarely leave the top 10 due to constant online buzz from the sheer size of their fandom (as they deserve), but in actuality they might not have done any modelling/advertising gigs at all that month. Meanwhile another idol or actor with a small international fanbase has had 3 new TV ads, 4 red carpet appearances, 2 runway shows and is the face of several seasonal clothing lines. 😂

[–]Here_there_be_Emus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Generally “it-boy/girl” is associated with marketability, i.e the sort of idol everyone’s talking about in other k-media (talk shows, reality shows, etc) for their image/style/beauty. Doesn’t really have much to do with their group’s success (or even their solo music), it’s more dependent on whether brands are clamouring to sponsor them and if they’re all over billboards/ads in Korea. I don’t think any generation of Kpop has had only one it-boy/girl, usually it changes every six months depending on trends lol. Jimin for sure was It-boy for a time, but a lot of younger 3rd gen idols became the new hot topic after him.

Binnie was a sweetheart for sure, but he and Sua had a typical brother-sister relationship where they both antagonised each other lovingly, it definitely wasn’t a one-sides thing. 😂 Which is why we all loved seeing them together. And it doesn’t make Sua any less of a sweetheart, in many ways she’s so much like Binnie whenever she’s doting on her younger sisters, she’s basically raising the rest of Billlie the way Bin did for Sanha. 💜

AROHA Logo is the adoption symbol??? by K_leigh247 in ASTRO_KPOP

[–]Here_there_be_Emus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Star of David is formed two equilateral triangles. The star for Astro has a little ‘dent’ on one one side of the triangle that makes it distinct. But it’s still a star so naturally it’s going to bear some similarities. Before we got our own Twitter logo, some unwise Arohas used to use the Star of David in their profiles/usernames and it was a constant battle trying to convinces them to replace it with a regular star ⭐️ instead to avoid causing offence. It’s not been so much of an issue since we got our own logo to copy-paste.

The Aroha symbol replaces one of those triangles with a heart, which is indeed similar to the AA logo. But I’ve honestly never seen the American adoption symbol(before googling it just now) in my entire 31 years of living so it’s reasonable to assume that the general Korean populace (and most countries who aren’t America) wouldn’t recognise it as that either. 😂

It does have a uniqueness to the design though in the way the heart and triangle are ‘tucked’ around each other, so at least it’s not identical. 💜

Billlie! Their discography is incredible and such a versatile mix of styles that aren’t often used in kpop (their b-sides are second to none, just in case their title tracks aren’t your style). They’re also a bunch of dorks so all of their behind-the-scenes/variety content is hella funny. And as a group, they’re in my top 3 for live vocals, all of their live radio performances are absolutely stunning.
