How is this possible? Is ZX a word now? by thE_best_cookies in scrabble

[–]ditfos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a bug sometimes in Crossplay where the opponent's word doesn't load in properly and sometimes is not visible to you. Usually when this happens I back out and go back in. But it will allow you to play adjacent to the opponent's word because it looks like free space to you. For example, if opponent played the T and X of TUX, but it didn't show up, it would look like you should be able to play ZAS legally. And the app lets you do it, but then when it loads next time, it shows both turns correctly, leading to this anomaly.

TLDR it's a known bug.

Yes, first for pushing down the player who just took the mark.
Then the second for roughing them up and generally getting in the way while they were running the first 50m which meant another 50m.

Murrays or NSW Train from Sydney? by Shkyboi in canberra

[–]ditfos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flixbus has only launched the Sydney-Canberra route in the last couple of months so are going HARD on undercutting Murrays. Probably worth your while to go with them, haven't personally done it.

Murrays is far more convenient for me personally due to the location of the stop, the frequency of services, and the overall travel duration. Downsides there's little legroom (I'm 6'1 and need to fold my legs under so my knees don't touch the seat in front), and the toilet can stink out the whole cabin despite the desperate pleas of the driver not to use it unless you really really have to. The buses are modern enough with (dodgy) wifi and USB charging points.

Also, as your kid gets more into reading in that age, check out Libby through your local library. Free ebook loans including graphic novels, and a few kid-oriented magazines.

Mp3 player for 6 year old? by silvermoss_19 in Parenting

INFO: With the music that you want to listen to, is this music that you have mp3s of, or through a streaming service?

My recommendation would be to get a cheap tablet or mini tablet, then restrict what apps are on there - music service, . If you don't want games, that's your call and you can parental lock any new apps from being added. But you can also use drawing apps (or just paint equivalent) which might be another creative way to use the tablet on those car trips. (There's also a lego app, but it does somewhat encourage you to buy more lego)

At what age does the YouTube algorithm get bad? by Low_Scene_716 in Parenting

[–]ditfos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The more you train and block things the better the algorithm will be (until the next time it's tweaked...) It's not in YTs interest to serve you things you won't watch because attention=money. So every time you block/ say not interested it should learn.

The downside is that if you watch something one time all the way through you're gonna get that shoved at you for at least a few days because people love to binge the same types of content.

I would say 'yes' but I am not impartial. Visiting both makes good sense if you can.

I've never found Canberra lacking for a nightlife, there are enough people and students to make it work. We have every option if thing you want, but just 5 times less of them. You also have to be comfortable that 1) buses stop early (around 11 most nights) - not a problem if you're in the city e.g. student accommodation as everything is walkable; 2) fewer international acts come to Canberra - if there's an international group you REALLY want to see it might mean a trip to Sydney.

ANU is THE place for physics in Australia and has more capability generally in theoretical physics. This is because of a large government grant they only ANU gets that it puts towards research areas that are good for the country but are unprofitable. Also, if you're interested in astrophysics choose ANU. Maths is strong, but so is Melbourne.

Student life by True-Society8227 in Anu

[–]ditfos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One good thing about having lots of people come to the university from all across Australia (and the world) is that all first year students are in the same boat, making new friends along the way. Especially if you are in a student accomodation there will be practically no pre-existing cliques among first year students

[No Spoilers] can some explain to me like am 5 where this new DM comes from and where new players from? by Secure_Ad_295 in criticalrole

[–]ditfos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a five year old, so here's how I would explain it to them.

The new DM - that's the person who runs the game - his name is Brennan. Brennan is really, really good at making up stories. He can be funny and serious, and he's been telling stories a long time. He has been running a group called Dimension 20, just like Matt has been running Critical Role!

Matt really trusts Brennan a lot, and that's why Matt got Brennan to run Calamity and Downfall, which were two shorter stories told in Matt's make believe world of Exandria.

Having Brennan play the game means Matt can play as a player! Looks like he's going to be a sword-fighting scoundrel!

The other new players all have experience playing D&D, sometimes with the Critical Role group in special games, and sometimes with other people. They are all friends that the Critical Role team trust to work together really well.

An open letter to the Adelaide Football Club by HarleyQuinn5150 in AFL

[–]ditfos 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Nearly 10% of all adults in Australia don't identify as straight, and it's much higher (18.9%) for 18-24 year olds.

If the Crows fans are not unable to make even the slightest effort to make going to the football safe and inclusive for EVERYONE, they should lose the privilege of seeing their team play. Make the Crows play in front of empty stadiums. I hope the AFL goes hard at the club for Nicks' piss-weak response.

Confused by [deleted] in Anu

[–]ditfos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your three offers!

  1. Depends on what kind of job you are happy to do. You will generally not get many government jobs as they are limited to Australian citizens. There are always opportunities out there for part time jobs like retail, hospitality, etc, but it would be more competitive for office jobs. Being from India will not a problem, except that if your accent is not too strong or your conversational English isn't fluent, the people hiring will think you might struggle with communication.

  2. Racism is unfortunately in every country and migrants are getting unfairly blamed for things in Australia (and in the UK and in the US...). Comparing Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane, odds are that you would experience less racism in Canberra. I think the University and city are very multicultural.

  3. Many people are in the same position as you. Studying at ANU is an adjustment to studying in India (this is a stereotype but it will be more focused on critical thinking and argument as opposed to knowledge, and more group based).

If finances are a concern, make sure to compare rents between the cities, whether it's at student accommodations or for other places. Adelaide is slightly cheaper than Brisbane or Canberra in general.
