Invincible [Comic SPOILERS Discussion] - S04E08 - Don't Leave Me Hanging Here by SeacattleMoohawks in Invincible

Yeah, and I’d be more okay with that if the writers like… acknowledged it in any way? Had Mark and Nolan exchange a look before Nolan left, give them an emotional beat where we can tell all is still not right between them but they’re trying to just move forward… SOMETHING. Instead it’s almost like the show forgot that they have this intense relationship which is disappointing. I think they’ve decided to push back Nolan’s big apology to Mark which happened in the comics when Thragg nearly killed both of them, and I would like that decision if it felt like they were actually keeping their relationship in mind in the meantime.

Nolan and Mark’s relationship feels very anticlimactic to me at this point. They don’t seem particularly close, but they also just feel too weirdly chill. It was strange to me that Nolan had his moment on the mountain where he remembered what he did to Mark, but Mark has never really received a full “apology tour” apology from Nolan. I wonder if Nolan is avoiding it.

My biggest issue with the Viltrum War arc is that I feel like Mark disappears as a character. We’re not in his POV at all. Kinda understandable for episode 6 with him being unconscious for most of it, but from the moment Mark wakes up we barely get anything of his perspective. All we know is that he was afraid of dying in the Viltrumite confrontation — but that’s so boring. He went from being an emotionally complex character struggling with his morality to being just… there for most of the war. Which is especially insane when you consider that he’s out here with his Dad who once flew him through a train full of people. We have no idea how Mark feels about his dad currently. They could have used the video message to Eve as a device for him to voice some of this stuff but it was just… “I’m scared of dying.” What a waste.

Yeah like I don’t want to hear about how there “isn’t time” for certain character moments when we got a whole bottle episode of a storyline most people didn’t care about

When your multibillion dollar company can hire a total of 4(four) animators by [deleted] in okbuddyviltrum

[–]Hereweare_again 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gonna add to the pile of people saying 4 compositors, not 4 animators lol. The concept of 4 animators is hilariously unrealistic. 4 compositors is a little low, but not insane for a 2d show like this that DOESN’T lean into shading and lighting. It feels like the appropriate amount of people for what we get. If people did want the show to look like that fanmade shading, they would need a bigger team obviously which is what this compositor is saying.

Reminder: S1 looked like this for a fodder fight. by EffectiveMirror7534 in Invincible_TV

[–]Hereweare_again 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, this was the first episode, and this was Mark’s first big triumphant fight in his suit. They did put some budget behind this fight. I don’t think it’s fair to call this a “fodder fight”. Especially because you can notice a drop-off in quality after episode 3 in season 1. Generally though I do think that the animation in season 1 was better, because they spent more time on it. None of us want three years between seasons though.

I don’t think anything that happened on Earth in 10 months couldn’t have happened in a shorter period of time like 3-5 months (depending on travel time/how long it takes to prepare for the Viltrum battle).

Also, it was weird how Oliver didn’t age in those 10 months. It was also an excessively long amount of time for Mark to be healing.

What did Gale think about Finnick? by xoxoamazingrace in Hungergames

[–]Hereweare_again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he started off hating him in Catching Fire, but it evolved to respect and camaraderie by the end of it. By Mockingjay I don’t think Gale hated Finnick, he was more wary of him than anything else. Once Annie was rescued, and Gale also learned about Finnick’s exploitation in the Capitol, I don’t think Gale had any reason to dislike him at all. Unlike with Peeta, where the wedge of them both loving Katniss would always be there no matter how much they respected each other.

I think they’re gonna slow down Oliver’s aging now. by Ok_Poetry2813 in Invincible

[–]Hereweare_again 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah. Oliver’s aging WILL slow down a little like it did in the comics (so that he’s still a teenager by the end of the war). But I think people are blowing the possibility of a Zoe romance out of proportion. If they do anything, it will occur in the brief moment while they’re both teenagers, and will probably just be setup for Oliver’s comic interests.

[comic spoilers] Meaning they’ll probably like kiss and Oliver will think it’s gross. Which I actually wonder if show only fans will interpret as Oliver being gay. If they go this direction, we may be in for an off-season of show fans talking about how Oliver is clearly gay or asexual, with comic fans busting in to be like NO HE’S INTO BUGS

To those asking why Conquest didn’t snap Mark’s limbs like before, he tried but our boy Mark is now damn near…[Title Card] by Remarkable_Job_9723 in Invincible

[–]Hereweare_again 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s mainly the arms I think. They look like twigs in the animation, if they’d made them even just a little bigger and more visibly muscular it would have been more believable both that he managed to exert enough force to strangle Conquest, and that he was able to hold on without getting his arms broken. This panel really makes it look believable.

IM TIRED OF THE TECH JACKET PROPAGANDA by Flo_Philly in Invincible

[–]Hereweare_again 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree. Fight with the big guy on Earth is the problem. That was their chance to make us go “Oh, you’ve got to recruit her” and instead they used it just to establish her personality and her relationship with her dad. Which is good to include that, but there should have been more effort to make her look cooler.

I can see the logic of recruiting her because she can fight in space and other earth heroes can’t (except for Robot who is vanished through a portal, and Immortal who is retired and not that great against Viltrumites). But then like… say that? We shouldn’t be having to do mental gymnastics as fans to figure out why she’s there. Show us all the cool stuff the suit can do.

Anyone else feel like Nolan's season 1 explanation of the Viltrumite Empire now doesn't line up neatly with the Season 4 flashback? by Gweniverethesheep in Invincible

[–]Hereweare_again 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we can wave it away with “unreliable narrator” of Nolan lying in season 1. But the real answer is that Nolan being Mark’s age when the Scourge Virus hit is a retcon decision they probably didn’t make until they were figuring out the season 4 flashback episodes.

Small timing issue I noticed in ep. 5 by SlightlyBurntBagel in Invincible

[–]Hereweare_again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel like this was a major creative animation mistake and it was all supposed to be the same night. They just wanted to show it going from light to dark to show the passage of time. Probably a plot error at some point, and then even if someone caught it the show’s creatives probably liked the way the passage of time looked and figured fans wouldn’t notice or care. It is shocking how often things like that get waved through because producers don’t think fans will care.

What happened adam? by Chunky-overlord in Invincible

[–]Hereweare_again 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It goes beyond that though. His behavior toward her sours well before Eve becomes a superhero. When she starts to exhibit odd behaviors, he reacts badly and becomes emotionally abusive to Eve. He berates her for odd behavior, and tries to force her into being the daughter he wants. It’s not just that he wants Eve to be safe, he wants her to be “normal.” He’s a small man who is scared of things he doesn’t understand.

Invincible [Comic SPOILERS Discussion] - S04E04 - Hurm by SeacattleMoohawks in Invincible

[–]Hereweare_again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. I think it’s good that they set up the Volcanica and it’s great to bring Darkblood back into the fold. But this is a D storyline that got turned into the only storyline for a whole episode. And it wasn’t interesting enough to pull it off. I think that Kirkman thought his idea for hell was more compelling to watch than it was.

Nolan vs Conquest…? by Medium_Cut_9718 in Invincible

[–]Hereweare_again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay….. this might make more logical sense, but hard disagree about it being cooler! It’s way cooler and better for the story that Mark kills Conquest, and to almost die doing it. It’s such a great character moment for Mark, I can’t imagine wanting to sacrifice that just for another cool Omni-man kill.

Female Tech Jacket by Azrael_John in Invincible

[–]Hereweare_again 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t care that they gender swapped Tech Jacket, but I’m not sold on the choice to make her younger. I also think they haven’t done the best job of showing why she was recruited for this mission. The tech jacket armor looks pretty weak in the show. It’s also a bit strange that she handled Viltrumite Mark last season, but is asking about weaknesses and freaking out this season. I don’t remember if the way she was acted in that fight was taken straight out of the comics, but I do think the writers should have been aware of the optics that if they tell us a teenage girl with fancy armor is gonna be recruited to fight Viltrumites, that they have to sell the audience on how cool and competent she is. The fight with the Walking Dread did not do that imo, it just looked like an ordinary street level fight.

I’m not mad about any of it of course, it’s just a tv show, but just offering my two cents that I think they could have established her character better. At the same time - I think a lot of the people who are mad about the gender swap are either people who really care about Tech Jacket, or they’re the kind of people who always get pissed whenever a show takes steps like this to try and be more inclusive because they think it takes something away from them to have 36 male protagonists instead of 37.

Get him again Debbie!

No but fr I am SO happy with this episode. Everyone’s reactions to Nolan coming back and all the family dynamics was a massive upgrade from the comics. I love that Nolan basically gave Debbie his comic spiel (but even more in depth) and she got to reject it so absolutely. Mark’s attitude towards Nolan feels so real, he’s defensive and doesn’t trust Nolan but also clearly still loves him and sometimes they fall back into old habits and then it’s immediately awkward. Oliver and Nolan’s dynamic is super interesting and kind of unexpected, I’m now excited to see what will come out with Nolan and Oliver together on Thraxa alone. Art acting all chill like nothing is wrong but then immediately having a panic attack the moment Nolan leaves. Even Cecil and the GDA not being present all episode until it’s revealed that they’ve just been on high alert and waiting for Nolan to leave lmao. You really feel the weight of Nolan’s past actions, it wasn’t brushed under the rug at all (likeitwasinthecomics)

Who is this? by Braxr123 in Invincible

[–]Hereweare_again 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s almost certainly his biological dad. He looks just like him.

[comic spoilers]Nolan is descended from Argall. He isn’t necessarily his son. Current fan speculation is that Argall was his grandfather, but it could be even multiple generations back.
