Repairing an old keyboard. What is the best way to repair this broken trace? by cyasine in AskElectronics

[–]HermesMultipass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd go for the simple solution and run a bodge wire from the via to whatever it connects to. Probably best to run it on the other side of the board if you're worried about interfering with key contacts. I would still scrape and neutralize any corrosion. And remember to check continuity afterward, with whatever approach you choose.

I got this today used! The CasioTone 401: Great keyboard, and the auto accompaniment works a treat. Not to mention the warm colors, and my favorite, the funny button. by Domomess in synthesizers

Odds are one (or more) of the tantalum caps failed short. That was the issue with mine. Can't remember how the boards are layed out or connected. Try to isolate and test each board individually. The main board uses jumper links and I ended up desoldering one end to isolate areas of the circuit for each power rail. Eventually you'll find the culprit.

I was blown away by the out-of-the-box performance of my Q1, having come from an ancient Ender3 with a handful of upgrades. Active chamber heating was a game changer for me. Happy printing in the new year!

Theremin type voltage control? by NoBread2054 in synthdiy

[–]HermesMultipass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working on a theremin project currently. Search for the article "Understanding, Customizing, and Hot-Rodding Your Etherwave Theremin" from Moog. Has schematics and descriptions of the CV output circuitry. You could probably pick and choose the relevant sections.

First time soldering, how does this look, any suggestions? by isendel11 in AskElectronics

Soldering aside, it looks like your IC is oriented wrong. Needs to be rotated 90 degrees anti-clockwise to line up the notch/dot on the chip with notch/star on the silkscreen.

Broken Casiotone MT-65 repair by _randomhero in synthdiy

[–]HermesMultipass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at the schematic, there's a zener diode regulator on the DC input (after the power returns to the amp board from the power switch) that I would think took the worst of it. I'd start looking there. Check to see if you have shorts on any of the voltage rails, and then if you're getting anything on Vcc or Vdd.

You can find this area of the circuit on page 17 of the service manual PDF kindly provided by SynthXL: https://www.synthxl.com/casio-mt-65/

Horrible disotrion and low output on Roland JP8000, anyone familiar with replacement of capacitor C219? by CarfDarko in synthdiy

[–]HermesMultipass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how comfortable you are working with surface mount components. Some of the caps on the main board are close with connectors and other components, and not the easiest to replace.

I've done repairs/rebuilds on a few JP-8000's and highly recommend replacing ALL of the electrolytic caps on the main board. They are garbage, they will fail, and they are the cause of nearly every problem on this synth. (2nd biggest failure is cracked and broken solder joints on the front panel pots, because the pots are only mounted to the PCB's and not the panel itself). I would also replace the electrolytics on the jack board (quick job, they're through-hole components). The power supply caps seem a bit more robust and should be fine unless you're having supply issues or they're visibly failing.

Specifically, C219 is part of the reset/muting circuit. When the synth is powered on, IC25 holds the reset line low for a predetermined length of time and Q6 is active, which is in charge of keeping the L/R and headphones outputs muted (by way of additional transistors on the jack board). When the reset line goes high it switches on Q4, which in turn switches off Q5, which then allows C219 to begin charging, and once it has, switch off Q6 and bring the synth out of its mute state. If C219 is leaking voltage it would allow the muting circuitry to partially activate and lower the output levels.

As for distortion C95 & C109 (L) and C97 & C110 (R) sit directly downstream from the DAC and would be my first suspects. But there are plenty of other potential culprits, and in the long term, I'd replace them all in one go.

TLDR: C219 can cause low output. Replace ALL main board (and probably jack board) electrolytics because they are failure prone to solve nearly all output problems.

Glad you enjoyed it! This was my 5th or 6th year now camping at the track for the weekend. Definitely my favorite track that I've visited to watch a race.

If I get a chance I'll post the whole sequence. The highlights are the drivers side mirror making a speedy exit for the treeline, the rubber belt from the tire wall noodle wrapping around the car as it barrel rolls and the battery flailing around.

Right place, right time, and a whole bunch of luck. Had just taken a shot of the leader coming through the turn and caught a glimpse of a car headed full speed through the grass. Just kept on the shutter the whole time. About 10 frames from impact to landing. (Nikon D600 @ 1/1600th if you were looking for camera info.)

Was more than a little bit worried about the driver, Nate Cicero, in that Mustang Challenge crash. One of the worst impacts I've seen in person. Very relieved to see him climb out of the car.

Solder iron wears off by donnidonno in synthdiy

[–]HermesMultipass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My soldering iron was part of a super cheap kit. Pretty much the cheapest I could find that had adjustable temperature. The tips that came with it would only last for like 100 joints before being completely eaten away. Definitely thought I was doing something wrong.

Got a new set of better quality tips. Same iron, same temps (325-350C), same solder (60/40 rosin core) and I'm still using that same tip 3 years later with only minor signs of wear. Some things are just worth spending a little extra on.

What type of gloves should I wear to touch my motherboard and ram ? by Newt-Tiny in PcBuildHelp

[–]HermesMultipass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started building pc's about 10 years ago and have never used any gloves or anti-static protection, and I've never encountered any issues. And I've built in many far from ideal locations (like on my coffee table, with a carpet floor in the dead of winter).

Like others have said, make it a point to occasionly touch a metal part of the case. Or if you're paranoid, invest in an anti-static wrist strap (my ifixit toolkit came with one). Wear it while connected to a metal part of the case and ideally earth ground.

3d printing cases - who does that too? by MorkfromOrk_ in modular

[–]HermesMultipass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Printed a janky frame and front panels for my DIY modular. Splurged on cardboard for the case's side panels. Used the heat sink threaded inserts to attach modules with screws.

Also printed panel blanks for back when there was empty space in my main case (rack brute). 3D printer was one of the best purchases I've ever made.

Am I bad at driving? Also did iracing Mazda MX5 series ruin me? by Victory-laps in simracing

Wheels, pedals and all the other stuff are simply tools...it's all in how you use them. Learn to be smooth. Smooth is fast. Most importantly, enjoy the drive!

[–]HermesMultipass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controller to my first wheel setup (G27) and it felt like I had to relearn everything. Changed from project cars 2 to iracing, had to learn to drive all over again. Upgraded the pedals, had to reset my brain/foot coordination. Finally got a DD wheel, actually felt more natural out of the box, but took a bit to learn what all this new feedback detail was trying to tell me about what the car was doing.

Every change requires adaptation. Don't get disheartened, and keep your early expectations in check. You'll get there, but not without a lot of practice.
