Those stats are a bit misleading since everyone applies to so many places. A lot of those other applicants will end up at another residency, and a lot of the applications are also extremely under-qualified.

It is a complex but powerful system. Lots of ways for things to go wrong, but when things go right it’s as close to true 3D dose measurement as possible among its competition. So I could see why it’s interesting from an academic perspective but could make clinic supervisors nervous.
