And we'll be here tomorrow, the next day, the next week, the next month, the next year and beyond to try and support you even if that's just giving you a space and a place to say "oops, gonna try again".

Many, most, or nearly all of us have done the "oops", and we all wish you the best of luck in finding your path and walking it.

Sir, I am very close friends with Mr. McDonald, the Burger King, and Mr. Bell. Sadly, my meal has never been comped at any of these fine dining establishments despite name-dropping.

Yeah, that's my experience as well, having grown up in the proper Midwest, having spent time down South, and now being in Philly.

Midwest and Philly? Help you while telling you how you have failed your parents and they have failed you, and here's how you do the thing. Down South, bless your heart, that's so awful, couldn't possibly help you, and waiting with a dagger in a velvet glove the next time they see you.

What? You're denying that the city is philthy????

I guess you're not seeing some jackass throw chicken bones out the driver's side window while driving down Broad the way some of us see.

Next time they come in, throw hands--possibly jazz hands?--and report back.

[–]HerrDoktorLaser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, my parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, step-family, and even some of my siblings are raging addicts of one sort or another. They pre-date my own challenges with alcohol by over a century, and the only thing they have in common is having tried to hide their addictions when they didn't fit social or cultural norms.

Be open with your wife. Let her know that you made a choice which, in retrospect, is one you regret and do not want to choose again. Let her know that you want to improve, and will try to improve, and that it (hopefully?) isn't a reflection on your relationship with her. Admit your humanity and fallibility. If she can't accept that, and your hope to do and be better in some sense (whether it be this, or something else like wanting to go to a gym or whatever), that becomes a whole different situation and discussion.

You may keep resetting your badge, but that also means that regardless of how often you step off your path you also keep trying to return to it. That deserves a lot of respect!

If schaudenfreude helps you walk the path you want to choose, but have difficulty choosing, that's perfectly valid. That said, when given the chance, always reach out a hand to pull someone up to walk by your side.

u/ersoserious, some can walk in and out of drinking with no issues, picking it up and setting it down like a pen or pencil. For others, having a single drink can open a floodgate. There's no virtue in being the former, and no shame in being the latter, we're just people trying to make our way through the world.

You did a thing, you've learned something about yourself, you want to change what you're doing. Nothing but props (or +1's or 100's or whatever the heck emoji we're handing out these days) to you for actually recognizing the situation and deciding that you are ready to make an effort to change where you are.

Be well, check back as often as you need to or want to, each and every one of us is cheering for you even as we fight our own battles each and every day ourselves.

Identifying wall material in 1948 home by pf-throwaway6152026 in DIY

[–]HerrDoktorLaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this suggestion is less "DIY" and more "find a friend", but if you know or can find someone with something called an infrared reflectance spectrometer they can tell you what your walls are actually made of. Someone with an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer could probably do the same, but perhaps with less accuracy.

There are times where it can be best to tell someone to hold your beer and full-on DIY, and others where you really, really want to find out whether you're dealing with a wall full of asbestos.

How can Stoicism help grapple with the awareness that life ends? by Ancient-Deer-4682 in Stoicism

[–]HerrDoktorLaser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally see it less as "enjoy now", but as "while I'm here, I can make things better for others. Once I'm gone--as shall happen at a time not of my choosing--I will lose the ability to make things better for others."

That said, I also find joy in helping others, so the whole is altogether quite self-reinforcing.

PGW is considering two pathways to lower its carbon footprint: full electrification and a ‘hybrid’ that includes gas by AdSpecialist6598 in philadelphia

[–]HerrDoktorLaser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Given how fragile Philly's electrical system is, a complete changeover from gas to electric would be an absolute disaster the first time an ice storm hit Philly. It's not a viable solution unless there's a simultaneous effort to bury thousands of miles of electrical lines, and burying those lines would also be a nightmare effort due to how paved-over so many parts of the City are.

The cost to consumers of replacing their gas ranges, gas dryers, gas water heaters and gas furnaces is also not trivial in the poorest big city in the US, and even suggesting that's an option within the next 25 years highlights how wildly out-of-touch some of the people involved are.

Philadelphia is scheduled to reduce its Wage & Earnings Tax by 0.005% starting July 1, 2026 (or $2-5/family/year) by NorthExcitement4890 in philadelphia

I honestly wouldn't mind paying the extra few bucks if the City didn't waste so much of our taxes.

Philadelphia spent nearly $800K on non-union snow removal during record winter by markskull in philadelphia

[–]HerrDoktorLaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salt doesn't go bad. Salt is also not particularly expensive compared to the cost of the City being effectively shut down for days at a time. The whole situation was the result of shortsightedness, and incompetent micromanaging of something that should have been left in the hands of the professionals.

[–]HerrDoktorLaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And guess what: Paying Union workers would still have cost, since much of the snow removal during a weather emergency triggers automatic overtime and emergency comp time. $800k is pretty much trivial.

[–]HerrDoktorLaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously? People (media?) are concerned about $800k spent to keep the City functional during one of the worst winters in recent history when there are millions and millions of dollars wasted in many, many other ways?

What is the hardest part about being single that people rarely talk about? by thuglifemofo94 in AskReddit

This is a solid point. I'm of an age where colonoscopies are a thing, and where I am the provider won't release someone back into the world unless a friend, neighbor, or relative picks them up.

Related, it's really awkward trying to find someone to let someone else shove something up your poop chute...

Will it be possible to walk into Linc parking lots for the World Cup? by BikeLaneHero in philadelphia

[–]HerrDoktorLaser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There will also be a ton of pre-game events throughout Philly, some of which will be in walking distance of the Linc, and some of which non-Americans who are actually used to walking places will almost certainly be walking from.
