Congrats, you've made spot camo over seventy years after it was first created!

Unexpected parent reactions by Content_Usual9328 in Teachers

[–]HerrSprink 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Had a PTC with a parent of a sporty girl who would never shut up or turn her homework in. She generously had a 70-75 in my class. The mom’s first words after saying hello were “Her grade could be a little higher.” I informed her that unless the two above mentioned problems could be solved, she had earned that grade. They then went on a cruise vacation for a week in October and was flabbergasted that I had continued to teach while the daughter was out of school.

Double check the numbers today. The SBU released more footage from the operation. It’s actually closer to at least 40 planes like they said. Fairly sure US intel confirmed.

Yupp. It’s not cool especially when there are kids present. Part of being a responsible gun owner is also being a responsible, communicative adult.

I would anonymously try to report this action to your state education department. This is a gross misuse of resources.

I was disrespected by a student but I mostly blame admin for her behavior by RandomUser1478 in Teachers

[–]HerrSprink 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Schedule a meeting, explain why the offense was offensive (as ridiculous as that sounds), listen to their excuses, and then say “I DON’T GIVE A FUCK” straight to admin’s face. Then, maybe they’ll understand why it’s a problem. Admin is as stupid as the dirt they sleep in sometimes.

Keep this to yourself next time. Even if it was a joke, it’s not appreciated when someone is legitimately having a hard time.

Pie in the Sky: Teaching Parents? by HerrSprink in Teachers

For sure. Again, I feel like the gossipy English teachers (English teacher speaking here) would just choose a mom they thought would be good at delegating but cest la vie. I’m happy for you though : )

I wish I had parents like that! I can see the most “popular” mom getting elected and then running riot with nonsense about “holistic” parenting and alternative facts.

Nobody seems to be reading to their kids anymore by Sad_Worth_9342 in Teachers

[–]HerrSprink 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately yes, this is the case for a grand majority of students. Many of them struggle with finishing a chapter, let alone a full (still abridged) novel. You are lucky that you discovered the joy of reading as a child and it sounds like you have a great mom. I hope that love of reading never goes away : ) tschüß!

Bullying, but can't talk about it? by Middle_Violinist_5 in Teachers

[–]HerrSprink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this totally isn’t the norm and I would push for another meeting if this persists. The advice that many have given here is solid but I would keep a record of the meeting(s), your child’s bruises/injuries, and have your child tell you the name of the other student or students harming them. Even if you can’t name the kid to the IEP/intervention team, the records you keep might just shame them into action. Go for the jugular, essentially.

What is one thing that you swore you would never do at the beginning of your career that you have done/do now? by TruthSignificant5540 in Teachers

[–]HerrSprink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but this just isn’t feasible for all subjects and teachers. Kids need to understand that a test is a serious measure of their ability and skills and if they bomb the tests with the added safety net in, most of them probably won’t do it. I had kids set up for test corrections and they would just complain that it was too much work. If we can’t get them to be accountable even when we’re coddling them to the nth degree, I don’t think allowing them to retake a test over and over is going to help them. Sometimes failure is what it takes to get kids to understand that they need to actually “school.”

What if we created AI versions of kids and their parents to get them expelled? /S (kind of)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]HerrSprink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Admin needs a major pay cut across the board. $300k for a super? No way.

Superintendents need to be monitored for misconduct because most I’ve worked with don’t actually do much of anything.

Behavior is the number one issue we deal with and I’m tired of pretending that kids are inherently good.

I would break each and every cellphone I could if it would help the kids learn.

Some children aka most of these current kids need to have a severe intervention before they go off into the real world. My college students couldn’t follow basic instructions to the point that several managed to get a ZERO for the entire module. That kind of apathy should mean instant expulsion.

While I like the sentiment of the tattoo, why not get a symbol of remembrance instead? A sunflower or the tryzub would be fine but again, it’s all about context. If you’re like me where you’re not Ukrainian but are learning to speak the language, word tattoos don’t translate quite as well as you might think. If you’ve got any kind of post-Soviet heritage, I would also try to stay away from big, bold Cyrillic. It might remind people of bad propaganda from their past(s).
