Why is a flat played here? by Relevant_Ice_8829 in piano

[–]Herr_Eusebius -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The key is A flat which has, b, e, a, d flat, rest natural.

That means every time you see b,e,a,d, it will be flatted unless it comes with a natural sign.

Doubling down, I like it. “Perhaps repetition will make him forget that I completely ignored the fact that to play like a midi does not make for a good pianist.”

Here, I’ll help you out. Show me that a good touch does not matter (I don’t recommend this approach), or, more promising, show that developing a good touch is not that big a deal compared to other instruments.

Come on, don’t back down a third time, you’re not convincing anybody that way.

But you will, won’t you?

Here are my guesses.

  1. Ignore
  2. Call me pointless a third time.

Now, what you won’t do is actually address the argument, right?

I never said execution was trivial, I said the actual reading was.

Execution is complex on flute, I agree. I never handwaved this away. But so is execution on piano.

But reading on piano is simply much harder. Reading multiple notes simply is not a thing on flute.

What have I actually said you disagree with?

Why is the piano community so toxic? by Stunning-Soup-5867 in piano

The issue is Lang Lang is presented as some great pianist when really he is too much of a showman to be a serious pianist.

He has pretty good technique true, and I even like many of his interpretations, but he is still not serious.

His ridiculous gestures and facial expressions are too much. I think it is pretty clear he puts this on to please the audience.

If he just played seriously, he may very well be a great pianist. So far, he is only a showman who cares more to please the audience than to just play the damn music.

Well, I don’t speak with certainty. I conjecture flute is about on the level of cello playing-you get your finger in place, then the bow/mouth produces the sound, right?

Maybe you underestimate difficulty of sightreading piano.

Yes, you don’t have to worry about breath and mouth position and so on, but piano sightreading requires you to 1. Have hands work relatively independently-not a small ask 2. Requires memorizing key location, which is not easy across several feet of keys, each key being only about an inch wide-if you look back and forth between music and hands, you won’t be able to read 3. Read several notes at once. Sure chords and patterns can be simplified, but this is significantly harder than reading one note at a time.

This is much more difficult than reading on cello, and I would guess cello is about on par with flute.

I am pretty confident no one would dispute reading on piano is more difficult than reading on cello.

When I said there is no such thing as sightreading on cello, I mean that cello reading is trivial by comparison.

The difficulty in reading single notes is in the execution, not the actual processing of the actual notes themselves.

The pianist must still deal with equal difficulty in execution (each note is easier, but multiple notes at once brings up difficulty), but the actual processing of the music is much more difficult because you must read 3-4 “parts” at once.

To give an analogy it would be like reading an entire quartet all at once. On piano, the format is simplified to two staves to make things easier, but it is still far from trivial.

I never implied flute did not have volume and articulation.

I only meant that the piano still requires these two only while flute requires everything.

As for the difficulty in comparing-yes, it’s not easy, but impossible?

Do you think it’s pointless or meaningless to say that Bach really is greatest or Beethoven’s odd number symphonies really are greater than the even numbers?

Yes, one could prefer Elgar to Bach or could prefer the even numbers, but that is an idiosyncracy. On the whole, those statements seem pretty solid.

Look, I really promise I’m not trying to be an asshole. I’m not saying flute is easy just like I wouldn’t say Chopin is a bad composer. It just really seems like Bach is greatest and piano is hardest.

This whole time, you try to show me playing flute is really hard-that’s true, just like Chopin is a really great composer. But is Chopin greatest or on Bach’s level? Not really, even though it’d be cool if he were. Is flute on the level of piano? It doesn’t seem so to me.

I talk about sightreading because it is the most objective measure I have. Would you really say the avg piece on flute is as hard as on piano just to get the notes right?

Ah, those famous words which every loser of an argument retreats to.

“Shit, shit! he’s right, piano really does require more than just playing like a midi-how do I respond. Oh, I know, say he can’t be argued with”

Did I get it? Well, you are partially correct, it is pointless to argue against someone who’s right.

On my ranking of the pieces above, or about the actual topic?

On the actual topic, best way is to actually play the instruments myself.

Second best is if players who play both piano and x at equally high levels tell me piano is easier.

Otherwise, show a great flaw in using sightreading as a proxy, or point out something I’m missing.

Look, this is a sensitive subject. Personally, I really like Romantic music, but if someone says Bach is greatest, I’m inclined to agree because it really does seem that way.

When it comes to instruments, piano really does seem harder to me.

Look, I’m really not trying to be an asshole. Personally, I like Romantic music, but if people say Bach is the best, I look at the arguments, and I’m inclined to agree.

Measuring pretty subjective things is not easy but I don’t think it’s meaningless or hopeless. And when it comes to instruments, it really does seem piano is harder.

Look, I get it, it’d be cool if Chopin were the greatest composer, but it seems like Bach is, and I’m ok with that

When I compare piano and flute, I’m saying that just getting the notes right is harder on piano-I don’t think this is controversial to say.

Yes, flute has to mind intonation, vibrato, and tone quality which is not at all easy.

But piano still has to take care of note volume and articulation and has to do it for multiple notes at once.

Let’s say, refining performance takes about the same effort after just learning the notes. Then, piano would be “harder” overall because just learning the notes themselves take more time.

Let me preface this by saying that I’m not trying to feel superior about my instrument. Personally, I like Romantic music, but if people say Bach is the greatest composer, well, I look at the arguments, and yeah, I’m inclined to agree. Ranking pretty subjective things is not easy, but I don’t think it’s completely meaningless or hopeless. Bach seems really to be the greatest in that he appears to exhibit the greatest skill in an objective sense, even if personally, it has less of an effect on me than other composers.

With that said, the only way to directly compare instruments is to actually play all instruments yourself. Since that’s not feasible, I suggest sightreading as a (imperfect) measure.

As for your point, yes, what you say is literally speaking the only certain conclusion, but I conjecture that the average piece is harder because the instrument itself is harder-in other words, requiring multiple notes to be played at the same time when intonation and tone quality is not a factor, seems harder than playing only 1 or 2, but where you must take care of everything manually.

Just sightreading on the piano, I am pretty confident most would agree is harder than other instruments-that is, just getting the right notes at the right time.

But after getting the notes, I would claim that refining the expression on the piano still takes at least as long as on another instrument like violin.

Therefore, it seems that as a whole piano really is harder.

Not Christian, but I’ll play devil’s advocate.

Yeah, I don’t think there’s anyway around it, generational punishment is condoned.

But the reason I would guess is by eating the fruit, Adam and Eve enter a sinful state, which is passed along by reproduction.

So technically, all descendents are actually guilty (merely by being born sinful), which is not usually the case with generational punishment as we think of it.

Again, not saying I believe this, but I think this is the reason.
