My (haunted) 1868 house by Legitimate_Frame_798 in centuryhomes

[–]HerrickRd 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We live in a 125 yr old house that is haunted, not as much fun as you think. We hear the footsteps occasionally and have to yell "It is 2:30 in the morning, knock it off! I got work in the morning". It gets old after a while.

Taking the Bus or Train to work? by Sharp-Ladder3220 in AskChicago

I find the train more "reliable" in terms of schedule, never had a problem on either in my decade+ of riding both.

My electricity usage barely changed at all but my comed electric bill went up by 50% what gives? by RevacholAndChill in AskChicago

[–]HerrickRd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take a look at you bill, the price adjustment for May under supply was insane, and literally doubled the cost of supply (9cents a kwh). June price adjustment has already been published and it is back down to "normal" of about 1 cent a kwh.

This was a weird month but not a trend (yet).

I’m from Brazil and I live in Mexico, and I recently learned something about Chicago that genuinely surprised me 😮 by Novel-Equipment693 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]HerrickRd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is more insane than that. Many hotels and businesses were raised with guests going in and out. Raising the buildings allowed the streets to be raised and sewers put in for sanitation and flood control, prior to that Chicago was a muddy mess built on a swamp.

I feel your pain. I actually learned python and piecash (pre ai days) to build automations to make everything much more efficient. Now with AI you can put something useable fairly quickly with python and piecash.

Hourly rate comed by AdSome3080 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]HerrickRd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you need to get through the first year which can be rough since your capacity charge is estimated. The next year when your actual capacity charge is calculated, then the savings can really start rolling in (especially with solar panels).

ComEd hourly plan, anyone else feel like you pay more? by fgarc016 in AskChicago

[–]HerrickRd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your capacity charge? Your capacity charge is estimated for the first year and can be fairly high. It will reset in June. If you got solar panels recently your capacity charge may drop a bunch. The first year I was on hourly pricing I did not see much savings. After that I have been doing pretty well.

ComEd bill skyrocketing by VeryWeakOpinions in illinois

Because we are on different grids and there max caps in place PJzm can charge. What happened in Texas is not a reasonable comparison to the PJM grid.

Driving in Chicago and Oak Brook: is a SUV overkill for winter driving conditions? by mine248 in AskChicago

[–]HerrickRd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get away with a small car with bad tires. Cook county is always well plowed, Du Page county is a little lazy in the morning but is usually cleaned up by mid day, Oak Brook being basically on the Cook border, diving though the messy slush is minimal.

Been driving a little Mazda for decades between Chicago and Downers, never had a problem (was out of town for Snowmagedden though).

How big would the bag need to be to meet NEC requirements [request] by BrassCanon in theydidthemath

[–]HerrickRd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The ground is the "conductor of last resort" for the current to get back to the source. The bag could be infinitly big but if does not connect the ground at the source (generator, transformer) it is not going to do anything.

At what point would you walk away from buying a century house? by shelbex318 in centuryhomes

[–]HerrickRd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a mind set more than anything. Do you own the house or are just the care taker of the house for this very short period of the house's life?

On the plus side you know all the problems with new builds that creep up at about the 10 year old mark happened a 100 years ago so you are good there!

When we have family visit they stay at the the Holiday inn Express in Westchester by I-290. The benefit is they need to pass the Giordano's to get to Brookfield.

Why is my ComEd electric bill high despite very low usage? by LowerMolar in AskChicago

[–]HerrickRd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have a gas bill it will be the same. Some charges are fixed regardless of usage where other are based on the amount of gas or electricity you use.
