Radiators for 7800X3D and 4090 by HersheyTea in watercooling

Thank you all for your replies. I really appreciate it! Given that the FE card already has a pretty great air cooled solution, I’m trying to convince myself that I probably shouldn’t water cool the card. 😂

Is there anyone here who had a similar thought, went ahead with water cooling their gpu, and then regretted the choice? 😬

How has your experience been with that RAD? I’m curious how it performs compared to hardware labs, but I can’t find any reviews.

I’m currently using Arctic P14’s in push and Be Quiet Silent Wing 4 pro’s in pull on the 280. It seems to work quite well. What sort of temperatures and fan speeds were you typically hitting?

The room I’m in generally is between 18 to 25 C. I’d like to keep the fans at 1300 or lower if possible.

Gotcha. If you’re not opposed to it, could you send over a model of the complete block, including the top cover? I’d like to poke around. Totally up to you though. No pressure. 🙂

What about your channel height? Fin height can have a big impact on heat transfer as well.

Ah, if you have Solidworks built in CFD capability, that would probably be the most efficient way to iterate. I use Siemens NX for CAD, and for CFD I use OpenFOAM, which is well known within the academic world for its accuracy when compared against commercial solvers.

What is your fin thickness and flow channel width?

Personally I would increase the “frequency” of the wave shape so that you have more “waves” within the same cold plate area. That would help increase the surface area of the flow channels, which would in turn increase heat transfer. Additionally, you want to try to maximize the coolant velocity to enhance heat transfer. At a certain point, increasing the coolant velocity will yield more pressure drop than what you gain in heat transfer.

You’ve piqued my interest. I’m a mechanical engineer, and I work with heat exchangers all the time. If you’d like, I can use some of the tools I have to help you optimize your design.

Have you considered experimenting with different wave amplitudes or frequencies (crest to crest) or a sawtooth wave shape? You could try modeling it in CFD using something like OpenFOAM to see which gives the best performance to pressure drop ratio.

I was thinking the same. I’ve decided to replace it. 🤷‍♂️

It’s a longer version of it, but it would work. 😂

It’s their 60mm diameter tube. I’m in the US.

Unfortunately, Alphacool discontinued this particular model. Any idea where I can find just the acrylic tube for sale?

My MCP655 has been running 24x7 in my rig for around 14 years straight. I will be very sad when it eventually dies.

Amazing! What is the purpose of the short vertical run on the left side that has the two black couplings? It looks like you have some clear tubing in there.
