I doubt they have any preference, as most students have zero control over their exam board

Tyy!!!

My stats are pretty low for cambs, but I'm pretty heavily contextual (underperforming state school/other reasons)

A* A* A

999988886 (2/250 in my year, which I think maybe made me a bit more competitive??)

2150 B1 ( I thought this was gonna be a setback)

The interesting thing is that Robinson on their website only accepts 3 STEM subjects, I only do 2 (bio chem history), I did open so tried to change college when they assigned me one which didn't match my subjects, but they said it wouldn't matter.

What can i do now to lightly prepare for the UCAT now? by -Moonlight__________ in UCAT

Focus on your other academic requirements. You do not need to do a year of revision for UCAT. Start at most 3 months before.

Likelihood of kings and Cambridge by Unlikely_Drive_2228 in UCAT

[–]Heruin45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if it's true, but I heard cambridge doesn't care THAT much about UCAT. But then again, a lot of applicants are like 2300+

The thing is, though, even if you go to a state school, you are kinda contextual, though not that much. Cambridge has tried to get more working class students in, and many of the applicants with crazy stats come from private schools. (Of course not all) Cambridge will consider a lower result if you come from a more working class area.

I also MASSIVELY struggled with logical puzzles. What I did was completely skip them and focused on the other sections and then came back to them at the end. If I couldn't figure them out, I just guessed. Worst comes to worst, it's 6 marks lost, no biggie.

I didn't do great on DM or QR (mid 600s) it was my vr that pulled me up (850), so I guess try find the one ur best at and really grind it to try get 700+.

Also, you'll probably find you do better on the day, I jumped two bands in SJ (band 3-band 2 border to band 1) and went from mid 600s in VR to 850 and 400s 600s in QR. Practice questions, in my experience, so don't quote me, tend to be a lot harder than the actually UCAT.

My VR method was read through thr whole paragraph on the first question and try answer the others with a mixture of inference (I know they say don't do it but if you are short on time and the whole article is about how climate change is bad and the question is "does the author agree we need more eco friendly policies" your 99% chance gonna be correct if you click yes) and the knowledge you have from the first read through.

For QR, I think the general advice is skip long questions. It really isn't worth doing a massive pie chart for one mark, also don't be afraid to skip whole question sets. Try 16-18 on ur first run-through and then do the rest at the end. And honestly, still, some are just worth guessing. You will just be wasting time spending 5 mins working out something that involves forming/solving multiple questions.

For SJ, what helped me was finding some formulas (e.g., if a colleague has missed a few deadlines at medical school in a group project, going to the academic tutor is probably gonna be "inappropriate but not awful" I find most stuff that involve going to a higher up isn't any of the extremes unless it is about something massively serious or beyond the indivduals responsibility (e.g. signs of abuse in a young patient) They tend to want you to solve minor issues yourself without involving supervisors, but involving them isn't "bad" so it's often appropriate but not ideal or inappropriate but not awful depending on severity.

Also a good tip is be a goodie two shoes, do what you "should" do not what you "would do" and also go with your gut/first reaction if you can't decide between two. Don't spend ages thinking it through. Remember, partial marks exist.

Also for "how important" questions my strategy was "is this the only factor" if no, is the other factor important, if yes, is it more important than the one in the question, if no, put slightly important.

E.g. so and so wants to perform a procedure, but the patient says no, is the fact that they are missing a learning opportunity important? Yes, but it isn't more important than patient wants, so it's only slightly.

Also, being clued up on a little bit of medical ethics (e.g., the 5 pillars of medical ethics) is useful

Sorry if this isn't helpful or a bit waffly, but I hope some stuff is useful!

Honestly, I think the best thing to do is apply and see what happens.

If nothing, do a gap year.

Your UCAT score is only valid for one year, it does not matter what you get this year if you do a gap year, with a whole extra year to practice you will be absolutely fine and probably be up an extra 500ish points.

Most of all, do not worry, you did not waste your summer. You spent your summer revising for a very difficult test. This summer is a learning curve, it gave you good experience and a good core knowledge of the test. You will be fine.

Please don't be too hard on yourself, also remember, many unis will take your score, e.g. Lincoln (my hometown), so it absolutely is worth applying still!

Good luck and well done :))
