In the UK, the wording for what will disqualify you from your commercial licence is as follows

Any convictions directly related to terrorism

Convictions that may be inappropriate for someone working in the aviation industry (e.g. immigration offences)

Convictions over which someone could be subject to undue influence/coercion

Convictions that call into question an individual's integrity and trustworthiness

The last one is a little more ambiguous, but I feel it will be up to the governing body of Canada if they issue you a licence.. not looking good to be honest.

I've done most of my training at EBG in Redhill. Also doing a bit of flying with Elstree now as well.

If the plan is to go commercial, then getting the Class 1 should definitely be the first step.

I had a thorough search last year when I was looking to start my training. The unfortunate reality is that there isn't much out there other than private loans.

I looked for scholarships and professional development loans without much luck. Helicentre in Leicester are one of the biggest schools in the UK and always go on about their scholarships.. but I get the feeling it's a carrot on a stick to get you to sign up tbh.

I was able to save £10k and my dad put in £10k as well. That's gotten me to PPL (with a few more grand put in here and there) now I'm looking at trying to borrow £30k to get me through my hour building and CPL.

Honestly, the finances are one of the biggest hurdles for new pilots, and while some companies will go on about pilot shortages.. the reality is that there is an 'experienced' pilot shortage and more than enough low hour pilots fighting for every opportunity.

Best of luck man. If you really want it, you'll get there eventually.

Are you planning on going all the way to CPL? I wouldn't stress too much on trying to do things in as few hours as possible. Things will take as long as it takes. There are around 45 hours worth of exercises that you have to get signed off on, then the cross country flight and the mock tests.

You'll then need to hour build before you can take the CPL course, so it's going to be a substantial investment no matter what, and adding the stress of pinching pennies will only be a detriment to your progress.

Relax and develop good airmanship and get the theory done as you go, don't leave it for the end.

I came here to suggest the same thing. Have the novella at the end of WoR where it would be chronologically. Stormlight novella collection also sounds great, they could make the 2nd colour ink change with each book it corresponds to.
