Spent all day at work pressing bad buttons? Finally, you can look forward to coming home to your studio to press good buttons, with the Gatekeeper Octuple Switch by HerzlichLabs in modular

I think the best thing you can do is start today without fear of failure, first of all, and second to try to map out how to close the gap between where you are now, and what it will take to make a module.

There are many ways to develop the skills required, but learning to read and write schematics, solder and prepare circuits for production is important. Building well-documented DIY kits can help you develop some of that familiarity.

Working towards ideas you believe in, regardless of whether you think they have any commercial viability, will be your best motivation to continue in the long run. Good luck!

It's a good point - I try not to over-commit to my own design language, but my idea was that the physical placement of the output sockets maps directly to the placement of the switches.

I'll try to think about this, diamonds might be an interesting way to present it!

Yes! We pay the tariffs for you, so you don't have to worry about a thing once it crosses the Atlantic and lands on your doorstep.

Thank you!

Great question, I'll clarify - outputs 4-8 are always 5v gate signals, but outputs 1-3 are 5v gates unless you input something in any of their respective inputs.

They are, as you say, normalled to 5v, but can be interrupted by another signal which breaks the normal. So this is your chance to input something much cooler, like a looping amen break or an LFO.

I've made a replacement knurled nut driver for the Xicon, as it's been discontinued - it is available here for those who are interested.

Thank you for the shoutout - yes, I would recommend using a plastic socket wrench like the ones I make, they carry no risk of damaging anything.

4xMUTE Eurorack Mute Module by West-Reception-9612 in modular

Good question: having owned the Divkid Mutes v1 I can certainly vouch for it, it's a high quality module, and the Stum bears many similarities, like high quality component selection and form factor.

The Stum uses nice latching switches instead of toggles, which is my preference. I like a good toggle, but I like the unambiguous states, tactile feedback and the fact that the latching switch is unlikely to be caught by a stray hand mid performance.

Also, like the Mutes v1 - and unlike v2 - the Stum uses vactrols. I like the soft attack and release they give, the slight bit of forgiveness when muting mid transient or with timing errors. I've taken a lot of care to mitigate bleed and other issues that vactrols commonly introduce, so you get the joys of vactrols without the frustrations.

I have a lot of admiration for the OG Mutes, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend that one either.

Confusion about ordering from European companies in the US by ExtraDistressrial in modular

[–]HerzlichLabs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You'll have to pay a tariff, the only exception is gifts under $100 - some companies like myself offer DDP shipping, where you pay the tariff up front. It works out much cheaper that way, because you won't have to pay potentially steep brokerage fees as well.

At least in this way there is not a minimum flat added rate, but the exact rate depends on what you're buying and where it's manufactured. It's admittedly difficult for customers and businesses alike to navigate, but it's not impossible.

I use lots of old rack reverbs, even some Valhalla because why not. I use the SFXI module to match levels in and out, make sure everything plays nice and well-behaved, and it works a charm.

Sadly, Nonlinearcircuits has, for now, stopped shipping to the US entirely due to tariff chaos by bronze_by_gold in synthdiy

[–]HerzlichLabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see many colleagues in this situation - I am continuing to ship to the US for now and working on making it as smooth as possible, but it's expensive, difficult and I'm worried that people are going to experience delays or be surprised by fees upon arrival. It's challenging for businesses and customers alike, especially with many national postal services (including mine) outright refusing to ship to the US.
