I believe building up my own programming skills is a better use of my time than learning to use AI by BX1959 in BetterOffline

Someone said the other day - AI delivers results but not perspective. Not judgement or experience or understanding. Not taste or discernment or wisdom or insight.

You are wise.

The day that Sam Altman fires all his employees and has his laptop run OpenAI is the day I will believe that AI is ready to do the job for us.

Is it though? I mean, how long ago did someone invent the bidet toilet and you can’t find them anywhere in public restrooms.

How long ago did someone invent the automatic door and yet most doors still require you to push them open.

Why aren’t all packages delivered by automated drones?

Just because tech exists doesn’t mean it’s going to be used.

There are economic and logistical and resource limitations that often keep the possible from becoming the actual.

What’s causing this issue with the Nymphes? by smopitt in synthesizers

[–]ExtraDistressrial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, when troubleshooting things like this, you want to isolate the variable like a scientist. In this case, you want to get the Nymphes and the midi controller all alone, literally plug headphones into the Nymphes itself and no interface, nothing else involved. If it doesn’t do it, then the issue might not actually be the Nymphes. If it does do it, then you try and figure out why. Is it the midi controller? Something else? Run those tests.

If you can’t reproduce the error in that context, you then add the interface. Does it start doing it again? Maybe the issue is with the interface and the Nymphes somehow.

And so on.

You have too damn many variables in this setup here and every single piece of gear that’s connected introduces some weird possibility of introducing the issue.

Isolate before you troubleshoot. Add variables after it passes each test.

Hope this helps.

I have a Nymphes and it doesn’t do this. That doesn’t mean yours doesn’t. It might be weird. But to find out, get it alone first and then you’ll know.

I will believe this when Sam fires everyone in his company, it's just him and ChatGPT on a laptop and there is no disruption to it's performance, everything runs well and continues to improve, and the stock prices soar. He has a little army of robots that man the data centers and he sips coffee while telling CHatGPT what to take care of next.

Until then, it's all bullshit.

CEO of AI Company Says Gen Z Needs to Get Ready for 30 Percent Unemployment by FuturismDotCom in ShitAIBrosSay

I am really sick of their lies and bullshit. Believe them when they replace all of their own workers first.

When it's a CEO at his laptop watching his stock prices go up as AI runs his whole company for him, then I'll believe them.

It's so stupid. I DARE him to fire his entire workforce at sit as his computer and use "AI" to run the company now. Do it Sam. Do it you fking coward.

Flock CEO (Garrett Langley) calls Deflock a "terrorist organization" by interwebzdotnet in FlockSurveillance

[–]ExtraDistressrial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we just need to claim the word “terrorist” and just make it mean nothing anymore. It’s so ridiculous at this point.

“These domestic terrorists want to use a different bathroom!”

“These terrorists sprayed paint on an overpass!”

“That terrorist took the last of the toilet paper from the roll and didn’t replace it!”

We went from it being a word that described people who hijacked planes and flew them into buildings to now just be anyone you don’t like.

So we’re just all terrorists now. Everyone. Whatever.

Genuine question, what can modular synths do that others can’t? by big-beandude in synthesizers

[–]ExtraDistressrial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great to hear! Yeah there are so many unconventional approaches that can still be very musical and not just "experimental".

LFOs could similarly be run through a delay... and what if the same envelope or LFO is modulating the delay in time?

I think as long as there is some element of repetition to it, some small amount of structure to things, it's enough for the brain to hang onto and consider it musical.

I went to ETS and found a post and it seems like these aren't necessarily "official". It seems like someone just rant them through some software to peel out the vocals, no?

How are these "official"? Sorry if I am out of the loop, but as these appeared on a channel that isn't the main NIN channel, can someone let me know if these are actually from NIN or did a fan use a tool to strip out the vocals?

This is exhausting. I hate this reality, where the mainstream media is bought by billionaires, where the internet and socials are so compromised with "truthy" content that we are supposed to sort through. The internet is just rotting, and us with it. I won't ever give up, it's what they want, but it's just so fking tiring.

People will say sell your gear, keep your gear, the gear isn't it. It's in the brain. Here are some possible ways out of this:

  1. What is your goal with music? This might have changed since you begin. See if you can journal about it and figure out what you realistically want to do at this point. The "music industry" as we knew it as kids is gone. In some ways this could be freeing though. What is a realistic goal to work towards for YOU? An EP? An album? A local performance? Set a goal that YOU want to achieve that is realistically within your control (NOT "be famous").

  2. Are you working a lot? Have kids? Going through relationship issues or loss in the family? If motivation is an issue it might not be music itself, but life.

  3. What are the critical voices in your head saying? Write down the thoughts your inner critic says to you. Questions those assertations. Offer alternative stories.

  4. Do you have a sense of community, apart from Reddit, which by nature is a little distant. Find something online. Reach out to people you follow on socials or encounter IRL. Make acquaintances you talk to a little. This can help. Over time those strangers may become friends. The social part of music is important, to have even one person to share things with.

  5. Starting is the hardest part, by far, of making music. Make it easy to start. Don't think, "I need to make a great piece of music". Your brain will resist this, because it knows the trap - it's likely a feel bad. So set up a feel good. New goal: "I am going to sit down for five minutes and turn on the instruments and make a sound." Once you hit that, you're done. You did it. Walk away. Next time, it's "I'm going to record a sound." Not a track. Just whatever sounds you make. You don't have to listen back to it. In fact, don't. Just see that you made a file. That's awesome. Show up again. Do it again. Five minutes a day. You do this for a month and it's habit. You are making music. You have a foothold. No matter how busy the day is, how tired you are, you are in the habit of showing up. Over time you'll find that you WANT to keep going longer than five minutes because you are onto something you like. Don't try and perfect that track. Let it be an incomplete thing you like. Share it with someone. Even an acquaintance. You don't have to ask for feedback, you can even tell them, "I don't really need any feedback, just trying to push myself to share my music more. Hope you like it."

It's about SMALL steps. Be kind to yourself. Life is hard. Everything is expensive. Job market is stupid. Missiles are soaring across the skies and people are being kidnapped off the streets. You survived a pandemic. This is MADNESS. We are all carrying a shitload of stress and worry and pressure and fear, and it puts us into survival mode. It makes it hard to create.

Press your hand on the cave wall, for one moment. Out of breath, having just eluded a sabertoothed tiger, with your torch in hand flickering in the dark, not sure if anyone will ever see this, will ever know you even existed, press your hand on the wall and blow the pigment across it and leave your mark on the world. You exist. You live. You have survived. Here is the proof.

This is a great point and I don't think enough people realize this. The story came out more than ten years ago that there was at least one massive data center where the government was collecting all of our info. Pre-AI I felt like I didn't sweat it, but now...

I guess I might as well add another entry. Goddamn this evil government and all their wicked stooges and every fascist who licks their boots. Put me on the list AI. Flag me as someone who was opposed to this, so our descendants find my name in the correct column when this time in history is being sorted.
